Time needed for neutering

Hi all, my male cat is almost a year old, and he has an appointment to get neutered next week. The vet told us that we have to deliver him at 9 AM and pick him up at 1 PM. I'm concerned because I feel like that's a long time. The vet explained that the anesthetic will need time and that the surgery will take place at 10.30, and that afterwards they're letting him rest until he has enough energy to walk. Is this normal, or should I be concerned?

P.S. The reason we didn't neuter him sooner is because we originally wanted to leave him as he is, since we live in an apartment and there aren't any female cats around. However he's been very antsy during mating season and we figured it would be better to neuter him for his physical and mental wellbeing.

Yes, neutering makes them much more content in life. it also prevents bad habits like spraying/marking everything, and yowling to get out. all my neutered cats were kept from 9 in the morning until 5:00! They wanted to make sure they didn't have any reactions to the anesthesia and could walk without falling over. the ones I did get earlier were VERY loopy and fell over, etc. it was sad to see.

Yeah, that's actually not that long. They must use one of the newer gas anesthetics. The regular injectable anesthetics can take all day to wear off. It's not because neutering takes long at all (maybe 5-10 minutes for the actual procedure), it's all because of the anesthetic .
