I had a feral cat trapped and neutered today so he’s in my living room recovering. One of my cats has sat there all night and when my other cat walked past him he attacked him, it was terrible. The weather where i am is -2 at the moment, i don’t know if the feral will be ok outside. But i can’t have my 2 fighting they have never done that before. Does anyone have advice for me?

separate rooms if possible. if you're keeping him, after he recovers introduce them slowly. you can exchange beds so they can be familiar with each others smell. feed them on opposite side of a door. maybe encourage them into playing together with a wand toy.
or you can buy a storage bin, put some blankets in it and put it outside if it doesnt work out

I had to let him go. He was scratching at the window and howling to get out. I did lock my two in separate rooms. I feel terrible, he was fed twice while he was here and slept off the anaesthetic 10 hrs. I feel awful now but i had no other chose hopefully he will be back in the morning for more food he comes every day.

He was a feral cat i feed everyday he won’t come near me and hisses at me when i’m feeding him. I’ve never been able to stroke him been feeding him for a year. I’ve been trying to trap him for months and finally caught him yesterday. Even before i got my two cats i was trying to bring him in my house and he wouldn’t. My two cats have never fought the whole time i’ve had them.

They where in separate rooms, my two where on the other side of the door with a sideboard covering the door because my two can open doors. It was my two who started fighting they never saw the feral. But i had to let him go he was here for 10 hrs and was fed twice. He was scratching at the windows to get out and howling. I feel terrible but he is not friendly ive been feeding him a year now and he won’t come near me and hisses when i get too close. I tried to bring him in my house loads of times before i adopted my two. I feel terrible letting him outside in the cold but hearing my two fighting might of caused him more stress. Hopefully he will be back tomorrow for his food i feel sick over it

sorry it didnt work out. does he usually go over for food everyday? do you know where he goes? if so you can make a home from a storage bin so he can stay warm.

I bought him a shelter he has his dinner in there everyday then leaves, but he must know someplace warm because my next door neighbor was feeding him for years and tried to bring him in loads of times before she died. I felt like i had no other choice but i’ve tried my best. He was treated at the vet vaccinated de fleas and wormed. I don’t think i’ll be able to sleep tonight with worry. Thanks for replying it’s 3 in the morning here and i can’t phone anybody there all asleep

Re-directed Aggression In Cats – TheCatSite Articles

It was redirected aggression which you witnessed. You and your late neighbor have done a lot to help this cat and it sounds as if he knows what to do outside. It is possible to tame some ferals, but it is not going to happen overnight, so you did the only thing that made sense at the time.

Thank you my cats and the feral didn’t see each other but when i looked in the room the next day after he had left he had sprayed in there so i think my cats smelled it and that’s why they where fighting because usually there the best of friends. I’ve seen the feral cat yesterday and he seems better he also had an abscess on his face from fighting that the vet drained. He never hissed at me like he usually does when i feed him so i think he knows i helped him.

If you could build him a shelter with a heated cat pad he would appreciate it since his caretaker died. You did him a great service by neutering him, bless you. Cats can survive horrendous weather if they have enough food, so try to give him all he wants during this cold spell.

I agree with looking into a shelter and heated bed. There are a ton of variations depending on the set up of your property.

I am having similar anxieties about my cats - it’s not quite negative degrees but lots of snow and they haven’t come back since their release. I have been told if he makes it past the first week then he will probably be ok especially if they didn’t shave him to give him any kind of tattoo (like my clinic did for males). I am sure he has another warm place he goes because they must go somewhere during the day to sleep if he came to you for food only at night. I’ve been trying to think the same thing about my cats who haven’t been making regular appearances. I think we did the right thing getting them fixed - I just wish winter would hurry up and be over so we can stop worrying!

I’ve been feeding him a lot of wet food and dry food too. I did buy him a small shelter but he eats in there then leaves. They weather is starting to get better now so i’m really happy about that.

I know, I get so upset thinking about where he is, he turns up all different times of the day and night so i always make sure he has dry food out in his little shelter and a blanket in there and give him wet food 3 to 4 times a day. I hope your cats come back to see you it really does make you worry.

I have no idea where he does have a small shelter where i put his food ive been looking at for a bigger one that i can afford. He’s been coming back everyday for his food about 3-4 times depending on the weather. But he must have somewhere safe he can go because he wouldn’t have survived the cold over the past week it’s been -2 -3 but i’m sure i’m not the only cat lover in the area maybe someone has made him a shelter

I’m glad you’re seeing him around and he is doing well! Just curious, did your cat get shaved? If so and he made it through the negative degrees then that’s a positive sign for my guys! I haven’t been able to find anyone who has seen shaved TNR cats survive winter. I’m sure they’re out there but no one talks about them.

No he wasn’t shaved but he was a little on his face where his abscess was drained. He’s been back today he seems to be doing really well it’s been a week now and the weather is getting better so i’m really happy. I’ve never heard of TNR’s being shaved in the UK, it sounds terrible to do. Poor babies 😔

Also i’ve never heard of a cat being tattooed before, they get microchipped over here. I know my feral had that done as well. Is the tattoo to identify them?

I’m not sure why they tattood him - it was really upsetting to find out. I inquired with the clinic but they haven’t responded. We’ve got about 5 days left of the storm before things get back to normal. I’ll be super happy once things warm up again here too!
