Hello, so my 2 year old indoor kitty isn't feeling so well. I'll try to give you the best timeline of events that I can. He's been hiding from me since Monday as well as puked Monday at some time, I don't know the specific time though. On Tuesday he was drooling from the mouth so I took him to the vet. They xrayed him and didn't find anything wrong and gave him an anti nausea shot which didn't help. Tuesday night I put him into a room by himself so he would be comfortable. He has a bowl of food and water he hasn't touched and he's still hiding from me and not using the bathroom.

I took him back to the vet today (Wednesday) to get blood work done. They're sending that to the lab so I should hear back tomorrow. Today they gave him another anti nausea shot as well as a new anti bacteria shot. They found a little bit of a blood ring around his private part so they think it might be an infection. I have him back in the same room with food and water and the litter box. I also have some meat flavored baby food in there but he doesn't seem interested in that. He has used the litter box though which is progress. Still no eating or drinking yet at the time I'm making this ( 8:25 pm). He seems to only drool when I offer him food, should I force feed him at all or let this ride it course? At this point I think it may be something with his mouth, which the vets haven't checked yet. If this continues I'll have them take a look there. Any other ideas in the meantime? Thanks for all the help!

Overall his symptoms are: hiding, not eating/drinking, barely using the bathroom, drooling.

Welcome to TCS! :wave3: I'm sorry your cat is having a health problem but I'm a little confused by some of the information in your post. For example, if the vet did not find anything wrong on Tuesday why did they give him an anti-nausea shot? And when you brought him back today another anti-nausea shot and anti-bacteria shot? I'm glad they did bloodwork and hope you get the results tomorrow. Hopefully that will indicate why he's not feeling well.

One thing that I think would help comfort him is to be in the same room with you as opposed to you putting him in a room by himself. If he's not feeling well or in pain it would help to have you near him for reassurance. :catlove: Regarding his loss of appetite, TCS has an excellent Article that may have some helpful information for you about how to get him to start eating again:

You mentioned that the vet x-rayed him but not his mouth. Since he was drooling I'm surprised they didn't check his teeth/gums. What did they take x-rays of? When was the last time he had a dental cleaning?

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to offer some suggestions. I hope the vet can diagnose and treat his health problem(s). Don't be hesitant to ask questions and voice your concerns. Best of luck, please keep us posted on his progress. :alright:

If he does not eat by this afternoon, I would suggest syringe feeding him. Do you know the technique? It is quite easy. Mix a pate-style food with water into a slurry. Draw it up in a needle-less syringe (or a medicine dropper in a pinch), insert the tip between the cat's cheek and gum, and SLOWLY administer a bite at a time, allowing for swallowing in between.

Sorry if any of the info confused you, I'm not the best at explaining situations. The vet gave him an anti nausea shot because their first guess was that it was just a stomach ache. When I took him back in the following day (Wednesday) they found some dried blood on his private part so they think maybe he has some infection, which is why the gave him and anti bacteria shot. As for the second anti nausea shot, I'm not sure other than just to help relax him some more I suppose. I haven't heard the results of the bloodwork yet, but hopefully soon I will. The x-rays were only of his stomach and below is what I was told. They were looking for signs of constipation or block up somewhere but didn't find anything. To get his teeth checked out they would need to knock him out and use some special tool they said. He's never had a dental cleaning before so I'm really thinking it's something concerning his mouth. I'll have a better guess when the blood results come back. I'll read that article tonight, my mom and I plan of syringe feeding him some kitten milk tonight! Thank you for the help and I'll be sure to keep you updated!

Alright I've noted the technique, I'm going to try with some kitten milk tonight and then go from there. Thank you for the help!

Did the vet check his teeth? Drooling can be a symptom of tooth problems. If he doesn't improve, I'd recommend a second vet opinion and maybe another x-ray.

Is it possible he got into a chemical or cleaner around the house?

Did they do a urinalysis? What you’re describing is very similar to what one of my cats experience with a UTI. When did he last pee?

I took him to a new vet today and they looked at his teeth and didn't see anything wrong. We're now going with the opinion of the new vet thinking that it's a UTI. They did an ultrasound on him and found his bladder was pretty big. They sucked all the old stuff out and gave him some fluids under the skin. Took him home tonight and he's drinking water which is progress, but he's still not eating, which is weird to me because the vet put something on his ear, I can't remember what but it basically is supposed to really stimulate his appetite. They use it on animals with cancer to get them to eat. So I'll monitor his eating tonight and get with the vet again tomorrow.

Took him to a new vet who does think it's a UTI. They did an ultrasound on him and found his bladder was pretty big. They drained all that old stuff out and gave him fluids under the skin. He's been drinking a lot of water since he got home about an hour ago so that's nice. I'll monitor his bathroom usage through out the night. He still hasn't eaten though. The last time he peed I honestly don't know, unless he did it somewhere secret and not in the litter box, my best guess would be sometime Sunday.

Probably a transdermal gel/ointment called Mirtazapine. It worked wonders for our cat's appetite when he was diagnosed with pancreatitis. Hopefully your kitty will feel hungry and starting eating soon. :crossfingers:

Are they testing his urine for infection and crystals? Did they consider that he might be blocked and did they prescribe an antibiotic? I’m concerned that your new vet isn’t addressing all of the pertinent issues. And it concerns me that your first vet seemingly didn’t catch that his bladder was full. That’s pretty easy to catch on a basic physical exam.

I’d urge you to keep a close eye on his litter box. If he’s still not passing urine, he needs to be seen again and quickly.

Update on the kitty, he's doing just fine now. He's back to eating and drinking and being his old self. The problem was something with his bladder. The emergency vets sucked all the bad pee out to give him a fresh start. We have some medicine we give him daily. Overall he's back to good health so hopefully everything is smooth sailing from here. I appreciate all the advice I was given and sorry I wasn't keeping very up to date with the thread.

Thanks for the update and, most of all, good news. I hope he continues to do well. :crossfingers:
