Last Black Friday Petsmart had a 60g tank ensemble on sale and I bought one. But due to much procrastination, I haven't set it up yet, and am just starting to now. So I thought I'd document it. Feel free to post your own aquarium pictures too!

I wanted to use sand this time instead of gravel, and of course aquarium sand is insanely expensive. So I got pool filter sand. I didn't know how much I'd need so I got 300 pounds, lol. Well, this is 100 pounds so I don't think I'll be needing the rest of it! Good thing it's cheap.

Probably could have gotten by with 75 pounds but I didn't want a partial bag sitting around.

Petsmart was having a "buy one get the second 50% off" sale on decorations, and I had a 15% off coupon, so I splurged on ridiculously expensive decor. I got both for $120-ish, at full price it would have been $200 for both :/. But I wanted something that wouldn't leave the top half of the tank empty.

Tomorrow I'll fill and empty it a couple times (I have a Python) to get rid of dust and stuff, and dig through my old decor to see if I have more fake plants to fill the gaps. I bought 2 internal canister filters but I'll only run one at first and see if that's sufficient.

For stocking, I was thinking of goldfish at first; that's why I got 2 filters, but now I think I'll go with a tetra tank. Lots of cories and otos, though! I love those little guys.

Very pretty set up. I used to raise African cichlids but don’t know anything about fresh water tanks. The Cichlids lived in a brine/slightly salt water. Fish are very relaxing to watch. I look forward to seeing it all finished.

Also, I started a cherry shrimp tank a few months ago. It's a 7.5g cube tank.

I started with ghost shrimp:

And then got a few batches of "color cull" cherries from eBay (because I don't care how bright they are; I just think they're cute!).

And now apparently they're reproducing, because I've been seeing little guys around, and the last batch I got was 6 weeks ago, so even if they were fresh-hatched when I got them, they'd be bigger that that by now. I haven't seen any females carrying eggs but they do hide well.

Little dude!

I have since removed the filter seen in that picture and am now just using a sponge filter. That's all shrimp really need and there's no risk of them getting sucked up in it.

Big tank is full and filter is running. I may have gotten slightly carried away with the fake plants and pebbles. I wonder when Petsmart is having their next $1 fish sale. . .

The ship decor is awesome! We had a huge tank growing up and I loved it. I could sit and watch fish for hours.

I've been mildly looking for a 40+ gallon for my cichlids but haven't found one I love yet. It's always fun setting up a new tank, so clean and full of options! I did start another reef tank, side by side ten gallons now but one is standard and one a cube. Waiting for more rock to cure for the new tank as it's pretty bare.

Cool! I don't know if I'm ever going to get into saltwater but I do love looking at them.

Petsmart is doing 50% off this same 60g ensemble (tank, stand, and glass tops) this Black Friday. It's a very tall tank and that's sort of inconvenient but it might be good for cichlids.

I haven't been out of town in the right direction to look at tanks since this summer and then it was the vet trip so we didn't stop longer than necessary. My town has nothing and the nearest town doesn't have much over 10 gallons. Some cute nanos though! I would like a new setup, not used if possible. I keep low tech saltwater so it's not too bad at all but I'm not the type that needs loads of fish.

Starting to stock the big tank. Am up to 12 black skirt tetras (if you zoom in on the middle of the tank you can see them). I would have more by now but they got ich :/. I'm trying the high temp method of treatment and so far it seems to be working, but I won't get any new fish until the ich is gone and the temp is back to normal.

Shrimp tank is doing fine.

This female is full of eggs, so hopefully lots of babies in a month or so!

Nice looking tank.

I'm getting back into fish from a very long hiatus.
Back when I had my tanks I would switch between fish and breeding Leopard Geckos every 6 to 8 years.

My first stand I built I still have, but it now has my Haworthia collection. Only picture I have of it when I had fish due to a hard drive failure that I lost hundreds of pictures, is this one.

My second stand I built, I took down a few years ago and sold it when we re arranged the furniture.

I've been wanting a tank for fish again and earlier this year I saw the Fluval Flex 32. I really liked the design and decided to get it.
It's been sitting around a while since I do not like the stand Fluval made for the tank and did not find any other stand I like. So I built my own. Which I finished about 2 weeks ago.

My plan is to build a removable floating shelf above the tank so the cats do not jump up on the plastic lid.

Beside the stand I'm going to make a cat house / tree so they can watch the fish.

There is a few tank mods I need to make as well. Maybe I'll get water in it to start cycling before the end of the year.

Nice! I know, good-looking stands are hard to find and overly expensive. But I'm not sure if I'd feel confident in my ability to build something that would hold so much weight!

Wow, very nice aquariums! I wish I had the time and money to maintain those! Love fishes, too.

Hello!

I have a 20+year old 35 gallon tank in the corner. We've kept a variety of fish over the years, usually freshwater. We will stock the tank and not add new fish until everyone dies off, just because of bad experiences with new fish bringing in diseases. Our last fish from stocking it 5 years ago died a few months back and we just cleaned it out and restarted.

This time I am picking the fish, so far I have a little betta and bristlenose pleco. I am planning on adding in a small school of harlequin rasboras once I can find 8 to 10 at a single store. I was thinking cory catfish but decided to go with a middle level fish since I have the betta and pleco (which betta should be top but Willie doesn't listen to what people think a betta should be and the pleco spends a good amount of time at the middle or top when it's active).

The little betta, Willie, is a super spunky and curious guy. So I am a little worried about him being aggressive with the rasboras. The BN pleco mostly stays out of his way and is way too fast right now. I only added in the BN pleco last week because someone was selling their baby plecos. I specifically wanted a bristlenose since they stay smaller but they are harder to find. This guy was only $10 which is a pretty reasonable for what he is. It is only an inch long and is supposed to be a red, but could be albino. His driftwood is on its way from a supplier who had sterile Malaysian wood. We don't usually do like plants in the aquarium because its another complication and we typically don't have fish that need live plants. The pleco will have its wood and some blanched veggies from time to time.

Nice! I like the seaglass.

If you totally broke down the tank, give it some time to cycle more before adding the cherry shrimp. They're pretty tough but also sensitive to water chemistry changes so you'll have fewer losses if you wait until things are stable. Do you have a test kit?

Also, bettas will eat shrimp when they can so don't get too attached (or pay too much)! Your tank has a lot of hiding places so maybe they'll be able to reproduce fast enough to make up for predation, hard to say.

And you'll want to get a sponge thing to put over the filter intake, because they WILL go up in there and get chopped up by the impeller :/.

I got my shrimp back in September and they're just now starting to breed. I have 5 berried females right now! Will now spam you with cherry pics, lol:

As for the big tank, I got some neon tetras, otocinclus, and ghost shrimp. It's been about 10 days, and now I can only find 6 of the 12 neons, but I never saw any bodies, idk what happened there.

They're shy:

Not a great picture of a ghost shrimp, but they're hard to get a good picture of!

Thanks for the tips. We are adding driftwood and moss balls once they arrive in the next few days. I found a guy selling the shrimp for 0.75 each so not too expensive but I was already on the fence about adding them right now. Just because the tank is so fresh and I already am feeling like its adding too fast. I just couldn't pass up on a baby bristlenose and there is a really really nice store near me that had the harleguins on sale because of overstock (they sold less then expected at Christmas). Im talking really nice store, large warehouse with a huge filter system and would out class some aquariums that don't sell fish. We've already discussed that the shrimp might be more snacks then tank mates for the betta. So far he seems to just be curious about the harlequins rather then aggressive.
