Should I get insurance for my cat?

I'm not a big saver and I worry that my cat may get sick. My last vet bill was over $700. Thoughts from our feline-loving families. Thanks.

For me insurance is a no-brainer. I have an older cat with a history of health issues. I pay $45 a month with a deductible of $100. After I meet the deductible, all vet bills are 80% reimbursed (up to $10,000).

For the math: As soon as my vet bills exceed $750, the insurance is worth it.

If you expect that your cat will experience another expensive vet trip in the next year and you can afford the monthly cost, insurance is absolutely worth it.

I got insurance on my cat when he was a kitten....I pay around 46.00 (Canadian) he is covered for $5000.00 per incident per year (so can have multiple claims)...he is seven so I'm hoping its adequate coverage....maybe when he is a bit older I may bump it up. It just gives me a good feeling knowing that its there if I ever need it.

They also cover medications, imaging such as xrays, ultrasound, cancer treatment, dental, and much more.

After a disastrous medical history with the d-o-g I started to buy pet insurance for my three younger cats. I have been happy with how claims have been handled, including an expensive one for Jamie, and just feel so much more relaxed knowing that I don't need to have the money up front all the time for medical care. There are a lot of options to consider.

When you select your plan, give it some thought. Usually if you change the plan later in your favor it will cause a new policy to be rewritten and all previous medical conditions invalidated.

I had an older cat who started to have health problems in her thirteenth year. I got her signed up for insurance a week before she would have been permanently ineligible. Trupanion doesn't write new policies for cats 14 and over. Some conditions were frustratingly "pre-existing" because I waited for her to start having health problems to get her insured. Anything with her teeth, any vomiting, and everything related to IBD/lymphoma was excluded as pre-existing. But she still managed to rack up a couple of five figure bills (more than $10,000) and Trupanion paid both at 90% after deductible, no payout limits. What they paid out exceeded what I ever could have paid in for her premiums. Unless I got another 5-7 years with her. I would not have minded having the opportunity to pay them back. ;)

I have insurance for both my girls (aged 2 & 3), who are thankfully healthy. I got the insurance because I am also not a big saver & if paying $75 a mth will alleviate some of that anxiety for me, it’s worth it.

I have ASPCA but it was a very quick decision and I did not do a lot of research. Happy with them so far and have had no problems. A close friend just purchased a lab puppy and the breeder told her he recommended Trupanion.

Thanks fionasmom fionasmom , there are so many out there! Petplan gives a discount if you are an AARP member. Pumpkin almost sounds too to good to be true. Wish wily1 wily1 would post the one they have, it sounds great. My vet mentioned they have quite a few folks with ASPCA and Nation Wide.

Oh thanks, I'll check it out. With the way things are in the world I need the peace of mind knowing if something should happen with Gypsy any decisions can be made without worrying so much about the money.

Have you looked into Trupanion? They don't have per incident or annual limits. This is fantastic! Because both bills they paid for me were double the $5000 per incident limit that Pet Secure has.

You can also get unlimited with Pet Secure.....I think once Tim turns ten I will probably up his coverage to unlimited....until he was 5, I only had $1000, but bumped it up to the $5000 plan....I have a fairly well paying stable government job ( 20 years as a CO and essential services) so even with the pandemic I'm one of the lucky ones.....but the insurance is nice to have.....because if my cat ever needed anything medical I would not spare any expenses....just love the little guy so much....they will even cover kennel costs if I had to be hospitalized and had nobody to look after him

I didn't even think of kennel costs that's a good thing to have.
I was one of the lucky ones for awhile but I was laid off 10/07/20.

I have $5000 for each insured cat. It is amazing how quickly you can reach the yearly limit with a serious medical issue, or even a few small ones.

There is a fairly new one called Pumpkin. I like a lot about it except the $7000 limit. As fionasmom fionasmom said and from what I've read here & on Instagram the vet care amount can reach alarming proportions so quickly.

One of our former members had lost her cat not too very long ago. She recently adopted a new furbaby, and has Pumpkin insurance. She says she loves it, especially since they don't cut a check, they direct deposit your reimbursement and are much quicker doing it than her old company.

Now, bear in mind that EVERY pet insurance plan I've looked into does not directly pay the bill. YOU still pay the bill, and they reimburse.
