Cat won’t eat bland diet prescribed for vomitting

We had to take our 2 year old cat to the emergency vet last night because he had been throwing up for just over 24 hours. They said everything seemed normal he just had slight dehydration so they gave him some fluids and gave us some meds to give him over the next 3 days. He hasn’t thrown up since being home, although the meds the vet gave him will wear off soon so hoping it stays that way! Now the vet prescribed him to a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice or lean ground beef but he’s being super picky and won’t eat it. Any suggestion on how to make it more appetizing?

Hi. Try mixing in some baby food meats (no garlic, onions, etc.) - most cats like them and I would think it would be as mild as the chicken and rice, considering it is given to babies. If he doesn't eat the bland food that way, just give him the baby food meats by themselves. Gerber Stage Two is just meat and broth, and a bit of cornstarch to help solidify it. Beechnut is just meat and broth, no cornstarch.

What med is he taking? Just curious.

I’ll give that a try, thank you! He’s taking both omeprazole to help with the nausea and bit of gabapentin for pain, they figure from throwing up for over 24 hours he may be in a some slight pain

The rice and prescription food isn't necessary. Prescription food isn't very popular with most cats anyway. You can poach the chicken or boil the beef. But really, if he isn't interested, just give him what he normally eats. But cut his portions for a few days. Maybe half portions the first day. Feed him smaller portions more often if he's still hungry and keeping his small portions down. Give him at least four hours between meals.
