I have seen some beautiful migratory birds! The Scarlet Tanager and Summer Tanager both appeared one year. I had never seen them before and they were gorgeous. Have you ever seen a Painted bunting or Indigo bunting? When I lived where there was a lot of undisturbed woods next to extensive farm fields, I got to see far more types of birds than I see now.
If we want to see more exotic birds we have to head to the Bird Park where they house many birds from afar but they do not have the migratory birds or at least not all of them.

Many migratory birds touch down and roost at different locations depending on the species.

I was out doing some yard work today when I noticed a lot of butterflies! The Sulpher butterflies were enjoying several kinds of flowers but two in particular. This one is on Cypress vine.

The other flowers they seemed to like are a small flowered Morning glory that grows wild here.

Around here, aside from some bald eagles, our selection of bird species is pretty mundane. On two occasions, however, I have seen something unexpected. Once, on Christmas eve, in a snowstorm, Michele and I were on our way home from her parent's house, when we saw, illuminated by our headlights, a snow owl fly across the road in front of us. The other was when I saw a pileated woodpecker out in the woods. Neither has ever been repeated.

I found this and thought that everyone might enjoy seeing all the birds but especially the Buntings. Wait for the male painted bunting! It’s worth it!

SPOILER alert! Stop when you get to the section on Hawks! All is well before that and rubysmama rubysmama a Blue jay eats peanuts!

Oh! I have always loved the Snow owls! I have only seen one as well and that was not here. A friend sent me video of a Snow owl up north. It was above him in the trees and, of course, I wrote back, “truly wonderful”! He sent the rest of the video. The owl had taken flight and as it left the branch, it sent a face full of snow and ice on him! He reported that the Owl seemed to understand this would happen as he had been deluged more often than not. Lol Smart birds! I guess he didn’t get permission to film.

When I was watching bird videos, most of the cats stayed put. However, when I got to watching owls and hawks, BJ came over.

The song birds didn’t get his attention. He just wanted pets.

He showed off his lovely whiskers.

Oh dear. An owl and a hawk! His feral instincts are still intact!

I think he was ready to protect me. Time to get under the sofa human!

Video off! BJ was very satisfied that he had scared off the hawk!

Thank you for saving me BJ! Ferals or former ferals, all felines are fantastic.:redheartpump:

I have always watched birds too. You may have noticed my ID here?
I never made that connection before.

Yeah, pretty mundane selection of birds here too. That's why I get excited about the ones with a bit of colour, like robins, blue jays, and the warbler. There's probably more "exotic" ones, but they probably don't hang out so much in the urban areas.

I found this and thought that everyone might enjoy seeing all the birds but especially the Buntings. Wait for the male painted bunting! It’s worth it!

Will have to set aside some time to watch, but I'm sure I will enjoy it. :) But will be sure to stop when I reach the part with hawks. Thanks for the spoiler warning.

Awww.... BJ. Great, as always, to see your darling face. :lovecat:

Lovely video of all the beautiful birds. Great that it's all I.D.'ed so that you know the names and sounds they make else identifying them is a pain.

This makes name miss my birding days ................................:(

tabbytom tabbytom I hope you can access that video. It has the buntings and the Pileated woodpecker in action! Although we have some colorful birds here and migrating birds, when I was in the rainforest, I was :jawdrop: when I saw the birds there! A Scarlet Macaw was watching me! Cat bird watching! Lol The hummingbirds, Blue Crowned Motmot, flocks of brilliant green parrots and so many more! It seemed that everything there was bigger or brighter. I felt very, very small. Imagine walking on a tree branch that was wider than a sidewalk! I met a family that lived “off the grid” deep in the jungle. They had a little girl ( probably about six years old) who could call the birds down. We did not speak the same language but... we shared a love of everything there. Same language of the heart. That child was amazing.

rubysmama rubysmama I chose that ID for several reasons but cat birds and birds, in general, seemed to fit with the kitties here. They shared the property but the cats never caught ANY of the birds.:dunno: The birds often ate the cats food though. I guess Bj guarded the cats and birds?

But.... if you watched the video, you just went birding! ;) Hmmm. If you can ever come and visit, you can just sit and watch. The wetlands areas nearby bring a nice variety. Not as great as the jungle but lovely. Each evening the geese announce themselves as they fly over the house. I do love the sound. They are probably leaving soon so I will miss the calls until next year. The geese can be visited up close and personally around here. They loose their flight feathers at nesting time and are wandering all the local parks and gardens. Of course, you might get chased if you get close to a nest. The Daddy hisses and is known to nip and twist anyone he wishes to intimidate. Very good Daddy!

I saw more butterflies today! This time they were on the heather. I’m glad they are finding something yummy!

I guess this is what he was thinking.

I may be a little fellow but if Banjo can do this, so can I!

So, if I aim it here....it should work. Yikes! How does Banjo do this?

I live within walking distance of the Erie Canal, and before my knees went south on me I used to jog on the towpath. Every year, from spring until fall, the geese congregate on the banks numbering in the hundreds and hiss at or chase anyone who approaches them. Not to mention, dodging all of the 'land mines' that they leave behind can be a daunting task.
