Pinnal (ear) flap

Hi all! Dr. prescribed medication I need to apply to his pinnal (ear) flap. Is this the correct spot I marked with the arrow?

Yes. The hairless part of the inside ear flap. Wear gloves, alternate ears, and wash off the previous dose the next day so you're not layering doses on top of each other. Giving it before a meal, if that's recommended or allowed, you can make the routine a precondition of the meal. If your cat is anything like mine was, he's not going to enjoy the wet willy and will probably resist for awhile. But he'll learn to tolerate it if he learns it's just part of his new meal time routine.

daftcat75 no instructions on before or after meal, it is just allergy medication and from what I read, it doesn't matter. Is there a lot of liquid that comes out? Its 2 clicks 1x a day.

I don't know about your specific medication. You didn't mention that. I just have plenty of experience with transdermal medications. Krista hated being pilled and compounded liquids were hit or miss with her. You'll have his attention before a meal. You won't likely have his attention after a meal. It's probably not a bad thing that it clicks when it dispenses. Again, if your cat is like my Krista, she would reluctantly come to me when she heard the clicks of our prednisilone twist-a-dose pen. She never liked the wet willy. But she knew that if she sat still for it, dinner was coming immediately after. You can either prep his meal and put a cup over it so he can't start until you lift it. Now you have his attention. Dose him and lift the cup. Your other option is to let him start into his food and dose him while he's distracted with eating. I hear this works well for a number of cats. Krista wasn't having it though. It was easier to dose her before and then let her eat in peace.

daftcat75 thank you! The medication is Chlorpheniramine Maleate and looks like before food or after food. I am thinking I like your method of medicate then food so he knows he is getting food since this will be a daily thing. I am just not sure how much liquid comes out for 2 clicks.

Directions: APPLY 0.05ML (2 ROTATIONS = 2MG) TO INSIDE OF EAR FLAP ONCE A DAY

0.05 ml is how much pred Krista was getting. Obviously the concentration of the drug matters more than the amount of the gel. But for comparison, I can assure you that you will not run out of ear. You can probably start mid ear and rub it up to the top in one smooth motion. You might have to go back for a second pass to rub off any remainder on your gloves. You'll get better at it with practice.

I don't know. I haven't used that medication and I'm not certain what the dosing pen looks like. If it's Wedgewood's Twist-a-Dose pen, then there will be arrows that you line up. Wipe the tip before you start. Twist until the arrows line up again. That's one rotation. Twist around for another full rotation. It will click more than twice on each rotation. Call the pharmacist that filled this prescription if you're unclear on how to use the pen.

The Wedgewood pen is easy to use. It’s going to burp a little between doses. So wipe off any gel that trickled out since the last time. Then spin to match the arrows. Do that for two rotations. You’ll have to prime a new pen when you get it. That means you’ll keep twisting until medicine finally comes out. Then line up the arrows and wipe off that first amount. Now you’re ready to go with your new pen. 0.05 mL is not going to look like a lot. It will be enough when you have to spread it across the inner pinna.

Depends on the density of the gel/liquid. Also depends on what size you consider a drop vs a pellet or a puddle. These are all inaccurate terms for inaccurate measures. That’s why these transdermal pens have precise dosing mechanisms so you always get an accurate amount.

"One drop" was to give an idea of that.

But you're right, my answer could be pretty misleading and I apologize for that. I should have added that a drop is not an accurate measurement, it's a loose generalization. And follow product's directions!

I've been compounding/diluting oils where an exact measurement isn't necessary and my brain got stuck there. For my current purposes 1.0 mL = 20 drops.}
