Should I really be worrying about the collars?

I've had a collar on Prince and Nikita since I got them, and that's about three years for Prince and a few months behind for Nikita. The thing is, as you know, I'm in an apartment and they are strict indoor (my paranoia). They don't try to leave the apartment when I open the door, almost like they don't really want to go out there. So the risk of them leaving isn't great, especially since I don't have the door open. Prince and Nikita had a rough night of play in which Prince's collar came off and I noticed that the fur isn't necessarily matted but like you can see where the collar was, and that's making me wonder if I should even bother having the collars on them. If they stood a chance of getting outside or if I was even remotely okay with them being outdoor cats, then I would keep that collar on; but with them is it truly needed?

Hi! Are they microchipped? Is your information up to date?

I don't have a collar on Poppycat who is microchipped, but I can't really suggest what to do in your situation either way.

There is always a chance of a cat getting out but I worry about collars if they do. I have seen a cat get trapped by a collar. Breakaway collars are safer. Microchipping would still identify them. I always take lost cats in to be checked for a chip. If the fur is just wearing off, it may not be a problem but if the skin is affected, that’s more of a problem. It’s a personal and health juice. Have you consulted your vet?

:yeah: I completely agree! Our last cat had a breakaway collar even though we kept her indoors only and a microchip because she had been an indoor/outdoor cat before we adopted her. Our present cat is an adorable indoor couch potato with long fur who would rather be by our side wherever we go so he has a microchip but no collar. It is definitely a personal choice and ultimately your decision.

They are both microchipped, but I haven't done much regarding that since I got them, so I may need to recheck that. As far as the type of collars, both have the snap collars, I was just worried because there was like an impression where the collar on Prince used to be. His fur was pressed down in that area but after a couple of days, I haven't found his collar yet , his fur has puffed up a little bit more around that area. Likely due to the fact that I have been petting and scratching that area over the last few days

I was going to say I’d leave them off, but that is a good point about someone else entering the apt. They could easily freak out and run out in that situation. Less of a concern with the microchips though.

Yeah, I've had those moments where maintenance or contractors had to come in. Nikita would just run under the bed and Prince would go somewhere but still be visible just checking the person out (ironic considering Nikita is the social one and Prince was the one more tempermental towards other humans). It was funny once when a contractor remodeling the place (I was there) put his hand out and Prince was the one to rub against him.....but yeah, they usually will stay away from the door if someone else enters. I only have the main door and a bathroom door
