I have five fuzzy furbabies I love dearly and they get hair all over.

I'm considering a portable, cordless battery-powered vacuum to pick up the hair.

I already have a nice vacuum from Sears that's great in the rug, but it's big, and bulky and a bother to use for a quick dash around the house.

Anyone have any recommendations? Cheaper is better, too, but not a deal killer.

I am in the same situation as you at the moment..Blue is shedding his winter coat and he does it all at once!!
He has such fine fur you can see it floating in the air when he scratches, gets on top of shelves and everywhere.
I have a small turbo head attachment for my vacuum cleaner, it has a rotating brush inside and about 7 inches wide...its very effective on the furniture and rugs. Its still picking up fluff and fur even after you cant see anything

The Shark cordless hand vacuum has been mentioned a couple times before here on TCS. There are other recommendations here:

How about those Dirt Devils?
I have a Dirt Devil handheld. It's got a cord that must be 25 ft. long. It does a super job and has lots of power.

Someone else here on TCS suggested wearing a rubber glove when vacuuming. It was a great suggestion. I use it to get the fur out of the cat trees and the crevices of furniture, then I can use the upholstery tool to suck it all up. I haven't tried it, but I bet "wiping" furniture with the glove will collect the fur in a clump.

And the cats - use a flea comb to groom them. A flea comb will get out tons of fur.

I have a handheld Dirt Devil like this:

It sucks 👎 No,seriously  The suction power is super weak even on a fully charged battery. It might suck up some loose hair but not cat litter or fur embedded in furniture.

Hmm.

Might have to haunt some stores and do some testing, maybe bring along some cat hair. Not like that's a precious commodity, compared to, say, toilet paper . . . . .

I bought a shark hand held, cordless hand vacuum, at least 4 years ago. Misty for picking up litter.
It is still going strong. In fact, I just plugged it in to recharge.

I have a dirt devil, Its red like the other posters. It has a cord and a stick you can put it on so its both cord/stick. It was a present. While it is nice and lightweight for picking up fur it is pretty weak and I have to go over litter and fur stuck on the stairs a few times. It still astonishes me how much fur it picks up though even when it doesn't look like there is much.

For 5 cats I think it's worth dishing out the cash for a good cordless. I have the dyson animal and it's made my life with 3 cats a lot less furry.
Is Dyson Animal its real name?

Bissell handheld is pretty good, it has a replaceable filter cup. That said, battery lasted only a year on previous 2. Fortunately, within Amazon's 1 year replacement warranty I got replacements. The one I have now so far so good, its lasted almost 2 years now... It has a spinning attachment that really grabs litter dust and hair out of carpet.
