Hi everybody!!!

I've known Anne Anne (both having experience with online discussion forums, her with TCS and me with BYC), and not only am I brand-spankin'-new to TCS, I'm also 100% new to cats! So it's just natural that when my girlfriend convinced me it was time to add a few kitties to our family, I knew the next step was to join TCS!

I've always had pets. Dogs, snakes, bunnies, and of course chickens... but never cats. Over the years I've found myself having more and more draw to kitties, especially since my daughters love them so very much. We have a neighbor 2 doors down that had the sweetest cat, and every once in a while when she'd see us drive up the street, she'd trot over and get a ton of love from my girls:

Here she (Sandy) is during one of her visits:

Unfortunately she passed away a few years ago. SUPER sad time for all of us :(

Well, fast forward to 1.5 years ago and my new girlfriend is a big-time cat-lover and has had them her whole life! She currently has one cat that is a rescue, and another cat she believes is feral that she cares for.

... they (mostly) tolerate each other:

In front is Gyro (the feral kitty) and behind him is my GF's cat "Monkey":

Here's Monkey getting some love from the GF:

I enjoy taking pics of him when he's in his natural state (usually sleeping/resting):

Well, the GF loves cats so much that she wants to always have a few that are rescues. About a month ago she found this local rescue around my area:
Feral Cat Foundation - Alameda & Contra Costa Counties, CA

... well, that started things in motion. She said these kitties need a good home and could even help with rodents that are around the property.

Sooooooo... TODAY (in about 1/2 an hour) we're getting two new friends!

Say hello to Caly (Calypso) & Rusty!!!!

I'm sure I'll have a few questions (and stories) to ask / share... especially when I don't want to keep bothering my GF! ;)

I'm looking forward to FINALLY having some felines around the house!!!

:yess:

... well, the lady that works for the rescue was supposed to be here at 3:30, and now she's saying 4:40.

The kitty-anticipation is killing me!! LOL!

My GF says this is me right now impatiently waiting for kitties: :livid:

Thanks for the warm-welcomes!

I can tell what a wonderfully special place TCS is!

So, the rescue woman came by around 5:15 with the new kitties. Both are about a year old. The female (Caly) had recently had a litter of kittens that were adopted, and she's since been fixed. Rusty was the last of 25 cats that were in an old abandoned house... he had evaded capture the longest.

Caly was VERY talkative from the start. Rusty was more docile than I expected.

I was really surprised that the woman dropped them off and put them in separate cages. I was under the impression (by what my GF told me the lady told her) that she had spent the last few days socializing them IN THE SAME CAGE and making sure they got along well.

... turns out that wasn't really the case. :(

So, I'm wondering if they will just end up tolerating each other, but won't really be cats that interact or are around each other at all. I'm wondering if we should have gone with a "bonded pair" since I hear those tend to be harder to find homes for anyway?

Either way, we'll love these cats and give them a nice safe place with food and water and love!

I will say this, they are both much more beautiful in person than I had expected!

More pics to come :)

Adult cats tend to be loners, with the exception of lions cats are not really a pack animal. However, having said that, I am sure they will get along just fine and Rusty seems agreeable enough to give it a try. :)

Hello and welcome to TCS. :wave2: Congrats on the new kitties! :bouquet:

How are Caly and Rusty making out in their new home? It's just the 2 of them, with you, right. Your girlfriend, and her cats, don't live with you, right?

Correct, my GF and her kitties live at their separate house (next to her grandparents who also tend to the kitties). If / when my GF moves in, her cats would remain with grandparents.

A few updates:
  1. Aries didn't work out :( The woman from the rescue felt like he wasn't comfortable with Caly, so she took him to another home and he's doing well there.
  2. Caly is doing GREAT! She's eating treats from our hands and is even letting us pet her a little. Rescue lady said it's surprising (given Caly's history) and really great news!
  3. Here's Calypso (Caly) at the end of her 3-week stay inside the cage. We'll be releasing her tomorrow and hoping she'll stay around!

Today's the day!

We opened the cage door and within about 5 minutes she explored out a little... but then my daughter started getting excited, said something, and spooked the cat a little and she went back into the cage.

I guess the good-news is that when she felt spooked she went back in the cage and didn't just bolt and run away.

The door has been open for the past hour and she's still just lounging in the cage taking a nap.

SUCCESS!!!

We opened the cage and she just stayed inside all day napping. We went to dinner and the webcam saw her leave the cage.

We got home a few hours later and saw her way back in the empty lot behind the house exploring.

A few moments later my GF saw Caly at the door... and this amazing thing happened!
