Hi I was wondering if you anyone could help determine my cats coat color?

I’m pretty sure he’s shaded silver or chinchilla. I have searched about both and the images I came across showed them looking virtually the same to my eye.
Here are a few pictures. It’s harder to notice in the pictures they don’t seem to show him The same way as to the eye.

Sorry forgot to mention, that the slightly black marks on his coat all all on the tips, underneath he is fully white.

I agree that he is either shaded silver or chinchilla. :) The distinction between these two terms is not rigid, it is just a matter of how much black tipping there is on the hairs... so it can be a matter of opinion. I would say chinchilla, but I am not an expert on silver colors.

Here are the definitions of chinchilla silver and shaded silver for the Scottish Fold breed in CFA (click to enlarge):

Thank you for the information, the definitions. We’re helpful. He does seem like he may be more chinchilla silver After reading through it.

What color would you say sunshine is? I have no idea about her I first thought fawn as she is to light for ginger but upon searching fawn she doesn’t look like it.

I am not familiar with your breed standards but based on what I know of silvers and goldens in Persians I would say the silver is shaded and the golden is chinchilla. The silver appears to have way to much tipping to be a chinchilla. You could ask 10 breeders or judges and get 10 different answers when it comes to chinchilla vs shaded!

I think Chinchilla because there is not enough 'darkness' or 'shading' blended from ridge of back down. He is too light overall to be shaded. But I'm not an expert, so who knows. The second cat looks golden, that is how I would describe her! Very unusual and beautiful cats!

As I said I am not familiar with folds standards so I could be wrong. In a Persian though this would be a shaded. The chinchillas are only 'dusted' with color, appearing to 'sparkle'. On shadeds the tipping color is much more apparent, like on this cat. I have seen judges look at Persians hind legs to determine if chin or shaded. Shadeds coat between the paw and knee(?) is usually much darker on the back side than on a chinchilla. Honestly I don't even know if the folds have shaded or chinchilla goldens.

The Scottish Fold does have shaded golden and chinchilla golden in its CFA standard. Not sure if these are CFA cats though.

It seems to me that the distinction between shaded and chinchilla can vary from breed to breed, and it might also make a difference when a cat is shorthaired rather than longhaired. And it probably also makes a difference which association you are showing in.

All very true!

Hi y’all, you both certainly know a lot more than myself lol, but Youve confused me you’re talking about golden shaded and chinchilla and mention the fold. I’m assuming you’re talking in a general debate about Colors? As the golden one is bsh. is she just golden? Or golden shaded or chinchilla?
just to clear that up.

Also Regarding the shading about the Scottish fold you were mentioning, when I’m home later tonight I will take a picture of his hind legs for y’all and hopefully that might help you slightly 😊

Did you buy the golden one from a Scottish Fold breeder, or a British Shorthair breeder? Is she registered as a British Shorthair? From her appearance, she could be a straight eared Scottish Fold, or a British Shorthair. The color is genetically possible in both breeds, but British Shorthairs have slightly different terminology.

And adopted them both from a women who was moving out of state and couldn’t keep them. The dad is registered as a Scottish fold and is fixed. And the female she said was but she doesn’t have the papers due to she never got her spayed so they didn’t provide them and she mentioned British short hair. I thought myself she looked more Scottish and she rather small too. So maybe you’re right.

Many Scottish Fold breeders use British Shorthair as an outcross, because they can't breed two folded ear cats together anyway. So she might be from a litter of Scottish Fold x British Shorthair. Is the silver one her dad? Do you plan to have her spayed?

true I heard that they breed with British or American shorthairs because the mutation if they breed together it can cause many issues. And no he’s not the dad theres a 6 month age gap. And yes I do plan to get her spayed as I have many cats now. I father in law has a free zip code spay service we use which is great. Probables is we have to wait a month as they book up quickly.
