I guess how far the swab goes in depends on the type of test that will be run on the sample. I get tested twice a week at work and it doesn't bother me anymore.

Well stocked supplies at the supermarket today, including some elusive Lysol spray and cleaners. Images can be viewed bigger if you click on them.

Bone in chicken thighs are on sale for $0.79 / lb, no limit on the number of packages. I bought one pack and noticed that instead of the usual 10 thighs it was just 8. There was plenty of chicken and other meats at the supermarket. Seems like the meat shortage / hoarding is over at least for the time being?
I noticed yesterday that the grocery was well stocked with items that have been missing for months. Even saw Dawn liquid detergent, spray disinfectants, and wipes. There must have been a production problem at one time that caused the shortages. Even toilet paper was featured near the front door.

I guess this question goes along with Covid because I couldn't find Scrubbing Bubbles again so I had to buy Kaboom Foam-Tastic. Sprays out purple and turns white when ready to wipe. Anyone use it? It did indeed come out purple but immediately turned white. I'm not saying my bathroom wasn't already fairly clean but that seemed a little quick.

I have used it and I thought it got the bathroom clean. I think the purple to white thing is just a marketing scheme. I didn't care for it because the scent was really strong. Scrubbing bubbles is one of the things that seems to be out of stock more then other cleaners. I found a can a short time ago.

I don't really have a sense of smell so the scent didn't bother me. I agree that the color is a marketing scheme but it did help seeing where I had sprayed unlike the Scrubbing Bubbles where it is white on white. I plan on going to a different grocery store today to check for Scrubbing Bubbles and some other stuff I couldn't find at my normal store.

I finally got some paper towels!!!! AND they were on SALE!!!!!! I don't care what people think at this point...I got 2 packs, although they were only a pack of 6 rolls each. I don't use paper towels often so they should last me several months...as long as my husband doesn't do any cleaning. He's terrible for using too many.
Vim disinfectant spray was also on sale so I picked up a couple bottles. And although people didn't go too crazy with this during the first lockdown, even though the stock was usually low, Finish dishwasher tabs were on sale almost 50% off, so I picked up two of those as well.
Basically the only thing left for me to stock back up on after depleting my pantry from the lockdown is frozen veggies and maybe a few more cans of pasta sauce and soup. I'm still working on getting extra meat to freeze when it's on sale, but I suspect we won't be going into a lockdown any time soon, so I'm not too concerned that any major hoarding will happen.

I was really happy too that sugar was on sale and I got reward points as well so I got quite a bit of that. But I bake A LOT for Christmas so I now have all the sugar I need to get me thru the Christmas season. I'm keeping my eyes open for sales on flour. I can't go without that leading up to the holidays, and if people go crazy with that again, my family will be very disappointed to not get their cookies this year.

I actually plan on going thru my pantry, freezer and storage and taking inventory tomorrow and make a list so I don't over stock on things I don't need, just because it's on sale. I also have to make sure I keep enough room in the freezer for when I start my baking next month.

Anyway, all in all, I had a really good shopping trip!

I had three tests done, drive in test places.
All of them were the same. One long swab, way down the throat first, way up into each nostril afterwards.
First test was positive, I was put in isolation for about three weeks, then a second test that was negative, and a third test a week later which was negative again.
So yes, I am one of those who met the coronavirus, but I had very little symptoms. The bad thing is that some of them never left me...

This story of lack of lysol and cleaners and toilet paper made it to here... Strange indeed, really without a serious explanation.
Over here we never had a shortage of anything. Plenty of cleaners, disinfectants, toilet rolls, food of any kind, and so on. The only thing that was out of stock everywhere at the beginning in the whole country was yeast.
But it was back on shelves in May.
What a strange world.

I don't look for lockdowns again at least here. I think we will continue with things as they are now for quite some time. We have been fine here for everything but disinfectants. Disinfectants weren't ever completely gone for months and months it was more just stock was always thin and certain things wouldn't be there for two or three weeks then they would be back and other things would be gone for awhile.

I clean bathrooms with mainly vinegar and water. I put about 1/4 cup Clorox in the toilet and rinse the cup with cold water. I spray vinegar on everything else and scrub with baking soda. These are environmentally safe cleaners. I clean all mirror with a mixture of denatured alcohol ammonia and vinegar. Work pretty good. Before I break my arm patting myself on my back please note I dust with End Dust. It is in an aerosol can. It is good for electronic stuff. I learned about it when I was a PC support tech. (Two decades ago now).

Flour can be frozen if you have the freezer space to stock up on that. I'm sure you know that some cookie doughs and such can also be frozen so you could freeze a bunch of things now and just bake them during the holidays.

Yes, good idea :agree:

You know...I did know that, but I've never thought of baking that way before....Usually I bake a double or triple batch of something and then freeze it. I start usually in October, making one or two things every weekend. I often make about 15-20 different types of cookies/squares, then have to store them all in the freezer. And I do end up with leftovers....not that we mind. :rolleyes2: And it's not that much. I wonder if keeping the dough frozen and only baking what I need at a time would be better...And if I have left over dough, I can just bake fresh for us throughout the winter.....Some things will have to be made then frozen but for others.... Food for thought...thanks!

Maybe portion out the dough into batches so you can just take one out of the freezer as needed and have just enough freshly baked whatever instead of a whole recipe worth. Cookie dough can be frozen as individual mounds of dough and then placed into one baggie or container and then you just take out as many balls of dough as you need for freshly baked cookies. It's a good question to ask on the Foodie's Corner forum :) Some of the resident bakers here on TCS might have some tips and tricks on freezing dough.

Did my shopping today. Every place had TP and paper towels, although Costco and Sam's looked like they'd run out before closing time. Walmart had plenty although some brands were sparse. Walmart had rubbing alcohol, although not much. Still no disinfectant, except for Clorox cleaner with bleach. I know bleach is effective and reasonably safe but I just hate the smell and I always end up bleaching my clothes.

Costco was packed! I haven't seen it that busy for a long time. They were doing samples again, but handling them out in little paper envelopes instead of open cups. Sam's and Walmart seemed like they had average crowds for a Saturday. Costco is still the most effective at getting people to wear their masks, and I even saw an employee "remind" someone to wear her mask over her nose too. But even at the other places, most people were wearing their masks. So that was nice. Last time I went shopping it seemed like half the people weren't wearing masks.

I just got back from Starbucks which is in the Supermarket that I go to. Out of curiosity I went to the disinfectant section. All of those wipes and Lysol Sprays were gone, in fact the shelves were completely bare. Now they weren't stocked up like the pictures that were posted earlier but they had quite a bit. They do have purchase limits but I don't know if they are put into the system so they are enforced at the register. I never tried to go over the limit so I don't know if it is enforced or not. I think maybe I was able to build up my little cache because I usually go early Saturday morning. They may put out all they have for the weekend and it doesn't make it through Saturday.

I had to buy Endust because there wasn't any Pledge Multi-Surface (or regular Pledge for that matter). Seems to leave an oily shine to my furniture. No oily residue. Just a shine. Not a huge deal. Just something I noticed.

This thread immediately came to mind when I came across this article:
Why it's hard to find paper towels again
Part of the reason for the shortage is people keep hoarding them: there was a massive surge in sales of Bounty paper towels in July, Procter & Gamble (PG) reported, as customers swept them off store shelves.

But the shortage could also have something to do with the way companies produce the paper towels. Lean manufacturing, in which companies make only as much product as they believe customers will buy on a given day -- has borne the brunt of the blame for the shortage.

This article explains why manufacturers couldn't keep the pace with people's request, but doesn't explain people were/are keeping hoarding toilet paper.

This is how the shelves in our local store looked like on March 20, at the peak of the pandemic.
Toilet Paper 2020_03_20.jpg

Not fully stocked up, but there was no shortage.

The best explanation I read was that people desperately needed to feel they were in control of something in their lives, and stocking up on stuff gave them some semblance of control. One doesn't have to worry much about toilet paper going "bad" and will use it at some point. :dunno:

Have you noticed all the online inquiries about how to get rid of food moths? I don't want to know how much of the flour people hoarded had to be thrown out.

What I noticed in those days was that this thing of the toilet paper was something happening only in English-speaking countries and some of the northern European countries.
It didn't happen in the southern Europe.

In the days of the Gulf War, 1991, I witnessed similar situations, but people would stock up on drinks, especially Coke

No, I haven't, but it's no surprise.

I just saw a video clip of a woman who had evacuated her home because of the wildfires in Oregon. What was she carrying? Two of those big industrial size packs of paper products. One was toilet paper, I recognized the package as one of the national brands, I think the other one was paper towels.
