Before we begin, let me just say that yes, I have been to the vet! We have been seen and received medication for our issue, but I am just reaching out to see if anybody else has had this experience with your little ones!

Hello, there! My name is Paige and I am new here. I came here to specifically ask about this.

This is River!

River is about 3 and a half weeks old and was abandoned in the parking lot of my workplace on Saturday August 22, 2020! I was called in to take her and was not aware how "little" they said she was. She has been absolutely thriving and has such a wonderful personality. I have never taken care of a kitten this young, so I was so worried she wouldn't make it without a mother. I reached out to my local shelter to see if they had any nursing mothers, but I didn't have any luck. Along with my mother and friends, I have been bottle feeding her! She came to me with an upper respiratory infection which was quickly taken care of with antibiotics and eye ointment. She started re-opening her eyes quickly!

Once her eyes opened fully and cleared up, we noticed a little white spot in her right eye (which was also the worst when the infection was present). We gave it another couple days with the eye ointment before we decided to go back to the vet today to get it checked out.

The vet said it was an eye abscess but did not specify what exactly. I googled some stuff because who doesn't? I found a few things but nothing really that looked exactly like what River has. We received some eye drops (ofloxacin) with directions to instill a drop every 4 to 6 hours. I was instructed to give the vet a call back on Friday to let him know of River's progress!

I am here to ask if anybody has ever had a baby with this issue? I've never experienced an issue like this with any of my other kids, especially not one this young. She scares me so much because she's so small, so I'm just trying to gather as much information as possible.

It's very nice to meet you all! I hope you're all doing well and your babies are happy and healthy!

Thank you in advance!

It does look like an abscess or infection, please give the drops exactly as ordered. Call early on Friday and try to have her seen if there is no improvement. It is important to have it aggressively treated to save her sight. I had this myself, and at one point had to have drops every hour! Please take her in ASAP if it gets bigger or worse. I'll pray for that sweet little girl.....

Thank you! I am giving drops every 4 hours and will definitely call on Friday. Did it end up working out for you? Did the abscess go away with the treatment?

Hello again everybody! I'm here again to ask about little baby River!

As you can see, she is so much trouble. She has been doing so well since my last post about the abscess in her eye, so thank you all so much for the advice! We actually went to seek a second opinion because my usual vet didn't seem to have the sense of urgency he had in the beginning. We got a new antibiotic eye drop and the abscess itself seemed to have ruptured but in a good way! It is so much smaller and less formed now, and we are hoping it's a good sign. We have an appointment this upcoming Friday to recheck her eye.

As to be expected from this tiny troublemaker, we are having difficulty weaning from the bottle to big girl food. She is a little over 5 weeks old now and started chewing on the nipple to her bottle a few days ago. I've been trying wet kitten food, but the smell seems to put her off to it. I tried adding some to her bottle to get used to the flavor, but no luck. I've tried just formula on a spoon for her to lick, but she is not interested.

Does anybody have any tips that helped you wean your bottle babies? She is very stubborn and does not want anything to do with just regular wet kitten food.

Here's a nice bonus of a fantastic picture I got of her a few days ago while she was falling asleep. She is growing so much every day and it is ridiculous.

I hope everybody's babies are doing well and that you all have a fantastic weekend!

Thank you so much in advance!

She's not old enough to really worry about it yet :). Bottle babies can be a little behind so don't worry until she's 7 or 8 weeks.

You can try offering her milk in a shallow bowl. That way it's a familiar taste but she can get used to lapping out of a bowl.

Gerber chicken baby food is a good way to get them used to the taste of meat. It mixes smoothly with milk so you can add a little to her bottle, and she might like the texture enough to lick it too.
