Mats are very difficult to deal with; you have to work from the base and go very slowly. If the cat is badly matted they may need to be sedated for a groomer to do a full shave.

When we went to the vet some time ago (before the pandemic), they shaved it by two people holding the cat (I think they used some sort of holding device too, something that looked like a blanket, but it might have had straps?) and shaving the cat.

I would like to pay them to do that again but kind of worried about coronavirus right now...
We have about 20-30 new coronavirus cases in our area.

It's not the clipper that is important but the blade, such as a #10 or a #15 or even a #30 blade. Please get your cat professional groomed, tight mats against the skin are not a do it yourself thing to try at home. I used to groom dogs professionally and went to grooming school, the tight mats that you describe need the attention of someone who knows how to groom cats. To lessen your exposure to Corona virus can you have the vet you used in the past meet you in parking lot of the clinic to collect your cat from you?

Yeah most vets are doing curbside right now. As long as you disinfect the carrier handles I think the risk is pretty minimal. Everybody in the clinic should be wearing masks.

Reviews for the Greyhound comb you linked say:

"I ordered this comb strictly due to the confidence I had in the brand. I used greyhound combs when grooming professionally in the 80s and 90s. Recently started grooming again, this time as a hobby though. I had good experience with greyhound combs so didn’t hesitate to order one. When finishing a dog the first time I used it two teeth fell out. Very shocked and disappointed in the quality. I’m hoping it’s just an isolated event. Chewy was very quick to respond and I have absolutely no issues with them!"

"I bought this to do some grooming on my 6 month old Cockapoo. It arrived and two of the tines had already fallen out in the package. I tried to use it and each time I did more tines fell out. It is truly a cheaply and poorly made comb. I definitely do not recommend it. Chewey sells the Andis comb which is much better."

I think I probably will go then. I guess it's true everyone is wearing masks.

Like the saying goes, "don't believe everything you read." ;) There are other companies who manufacture this type of comb. I have had mine for well over ten years and never had any problem with the teeth falling out. Unfortunately many times, although not always, people only write about bad reviews or complaints and you don't hear about the positive ones.

posiepurrs posiepurrs one of our esteemed and well known members on TCS is a professional breeder who recommends the greyhound stainless steel comb also. Here is just one of many threads where she writes about this subject - please scroll down to her post: Grooming tools for Persians

Best of luck finding the right grooming tool for your cat.
