What are some movies that you've seen where you do not understand why they are so popular or get rave reviews?

Here's my list:
Call Me By Your Name - I don't know if there was something left out of the movie but was in the book that made the title make more sense, but it had me wondering what was even the point. I also didn't like it because it was this older guy trying to get with this teenaged boy and underage anything is just gross.
Dirty Dancing - I never understood the appeal
Grease - Same as above
Pretty much all superhero movies - there's too many
Finding Nemo - it wasn't bad, but there are much better Pixar movies in my opinion
Caddyshack - my parents were very disappointed that neither me nor my siblings liked this movie as much as they do
Annie Hall - just boring

Gone with the Wind. Can't stand it. I haven't read the book yet; I really should read it and see if it's any better.

And, yeah, Grease. I don't like it at all. Plus when I was growing up, in a very religious situation, all the girls in the church loved that movie and I was all like. . .um, do you even know what they're talking about. . .? Because I do.

I don't know if I've ever seen Dirty Dancing but it looks pretty similar and I don't think I'd like it. Really all the '80s teen girl movies, like Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club, etc. Nope.

The only 80s movie with Molly Ringwald I regularly watched when it came on was For Keeps and almost nobody has heard of it.

I agree on super hero movies. The ones I've enjoyed have all been the ones that don't follow the tropes (ie Mystery Men, Into the Spiderverse, Hancock, Logan) I was waiting for a flight in Hanoi and Aquaman was playing on a big TV and I thought: this can't possibly be the real movie, surely this is like the made-for-TV Christmas special?? I haven't even bothered to watch anything post-Guardians of the Galaxy 2 as far as the Marvel Universe goes and stopped watching DC Universe stuff after Dark Knight came out.

Star Wars. We saw it when it came out, and I still don't get it. Suffice to say we never went back for any sequels- once was too much.

We watched The Lighthouse and it felt like I had completely wasted my time, but when I was looking for an explanation of what happened and lists of best movies of 2019, it seemed to have gotten good reviews. I didn't get it - I thought it was terrible!

Avatar - Don't get me wrong, it was good but as for all the hype? meh.
Shrek - Again, good and funny overall, I love pretty much all animated (disney/pixar/dreamworks) but the obsession towards this movie...meh.
Titanic - Same sentiments as above....good movie, just don't get the hype about it.

I often don't get the hype with a lot of movies...I know it boils down to personal taste, but I just don't put much clout in a movie...most of the time I don't agree with critics. Often, I really like a movie that gets terrible reviews, and not so much a movie that won an oscar...It all comes down to what I was in the mood for, I guess, and if it passed my expectations at the time I watched it.
When making a decision about what movie to watch, I go into it with a certain expectation, and nothing fancy either. If it's comedy, I want to laugh. If it's action / super hero, I want action and one liners. Even the super cheesy movies like Sharknado, I liked that movie because I went into it knowing it was supposed to be cheesy with terrible overacting and impossible scenarios...so it passed.

The hype about Titanic was mostly about the cinematography and attention to detail. It was also about the sinking itself. The story still packs a punch because it was so avoidable and so heartbreaking. Bringing it back to life touched people deeply.

James Cameron did a great job. What was underwhelming IMO was the love story. I understand the need to put it in there but it seemed trite and forced. I remember people (women and girls of course) being outraged that Leo wasn't nominated for an oscar. He wasn't because his performance was just OK. Kate Winslet didn't win because hers was better than his but still just OK. The best acting in the movie (IMO of course) was Kathy Bates as the unsinkable Molly Brown.

Yes I agree...He did do a great job...and if that is all the hype was about then fine, he does deserve it. But, like you I was just "meh" about the story, while everyone else was ga ga over the love story.
Kathy Bates is awesome in everything she does, no matter how small or big a part she plays...I really like her.

Can I ask why you think it's overrated? And yes, the book is better than the movie.
Unlikeable characters, romanticization of unpleasant things. I'm sure it deserved every Oscar it got but I didn't like it. Granted, it's been a long time since I saw it last, maybe if I go into it thinking that the characters are supposed to be unlikeable I'd enjoy it more, lol.

Me too! She's great.

The Princess Bride
A Christmas Story
Ferris Buler's Day Off (and almost any other 80s teen movie)

Almost any Jim Carey/Adam Sandler type comedy. I've enjoyed a few; like Mr Deeds, but mostly I really dislike that sort of humor.

MoonstoneWolf MoonstoneWolf I'm with you on the zombie thing. I find it all so annoying. If we're adding TV shows, add in Game of Thrones. My late DH used to watch it and the times I did sit through it, I rolled my eyes so many times, i thought they'd get stuck. :rolleyes2:
