My little precious 10 month old kittie died yesterday. My girlfriend and I still have no explanation as to why. It all started when he got neutered/rabies vaccine. After words he was very sluggish. Obviously we thought “the surgery.” After about 72 hours after nothing changed very sluggish and also very slow decline in his eating habits and slowly stopped drinking as much water as usual. So at day 5 it was like a total nightmare. I came home from work and instead of being greeted at the door he layer in his bed facing away from me forehead first on the couch. Hardly moved at all and completely stopped drinking and eating with puking up yellow bile. We immediately took to the vet. The vet gave an appetite stimulate and anti-nausea medication. Didn’t work. Next day back at the vet. They ran an X-ray and administered fluids. Nothing showed up on X-ray so vet thought it could be a hairball since hair is to thin to show up on one. They gave the first dosage and left us the remainder. The vet was so reassuring that this was the issue and it made practical sense. When carrying our kitten in the carrying case outside he actually looked a tiny bit better. He was responsive and his eyes had “color”. We got back home and my girlfriend watched over kittie. This was the first time we had hope since the initial turmoil. I went back to work. I get a call 3 hours later. Our little kittie passed. So incredibly sad . We can’t make it out... what the hell was it? We suspect neglect at the neutering facility. We blame ourselves for not following our gut, but we had the recommendation from the local humane society so we went for it. The person there met us outside(covid times...) and it seemed like we were a burden and she was not friendly or showed any compassion for animals. Nothing overall blatant sign but still shady.... please I need some closure... any ideas on the cause of death or ideas on what the hell happened. Please .

I am so sorry this happened to you. Some cats cannot handle the sedation so unfortunately there is no way of knowing. No one is to blame. I have an 8 yr old cat with medical issues but my vet is afraid to do blood work because it requires sedation and she might have a bad reaction to it.

Can find info on the vet? Like how long he has worked there, who did the sedation before the surgery, what kind of sedation was it? One time a group of teenagers tried to sedate my cat. I told the vet and he watched to make sure they did it right. I was mad

It could also have been the rabies vaccine that caused this. Some cats have horrible reactions to vaccines and unfortunately the only way you can know is by seeing what happens after the shot. sometimes they can be saved and sometimes not. Bottom line, at this point, there is just no way of knowing what happened :frown: I'm so, so sorry for your loss :alright:

Not that it will make the slightest different, but a very similar situation happened to another member, and here is their thread: Four year old cat died 6 days after neuter - low body temp & pneumonia

I agree with all the above members. :agree: We had a cat that had a bad reaction to his rabies vaccine and a different cat that had an adverse reaction to anesthesia. Please accept my deepest regrets and heartfelt sympathies on the loss of your kitten. :hugs:

I'm very sorry for your loss. This must have been traumatic for both of you. Neutering is a simple procedure. Where I live there are street cats everywhere and they get released back to the street the same day they get neutered. However, as it's been said not every cat can handle sedation and/or if there was a problem with the immune system they react badly to vaccines. This is minority, but it happens to some cats and the only way to see it is to try.

I must say though, at 10 months he wasn't very young so it can't be "small kitten vulnerability." If he reacted this badly to the procedures, the chances are he was going to get ill over something else when he eventually got exposed to a health challenge. The first like 1,5 years of a cat's (or dog's) life is like a series of health and immune system tests. Some pass, some can't. Most cats who develop FIP for example are also younger than 2 years old. Of course still check the clinic if there was any foul. But this might be nobody's fault.

I am so sorry for your loss. A dear friend lost a kitten years ago under the same circumstances with neutering and shots being given at the same time. It was actually slightly older than your kitten with no previous signs of ill health. My vet won't neuter and give shots at the same time....yes, that is obsessively cautious, but he must have had some experience where things went wrong. You are not to blame, and I doubt that the people in the facility are either.

It all started when he got neutered/rabies vaccine.
Was he neutered right after vaccination? Because vaccine lowers immune system for about 14 days, and surgery needs to be done when cat's immune system is high.

I would do a lot more digging on the vet / clinic, see if anybody else had similar story there.

My 5 month male kitten passed away yesterday during a neutering procedure. I am devastated. The chances of this happening to a young healthy boy kitten were very rare but it can happen and did.
