For all star gazers, to get the latest updates of what's coming our way from outer space, subscribe to :- / (Sky & Telescope | Astronomy News)

To view our planetarium, download / (Stellarium Astronomy Software). This one is very interesting)

For iPhone/iPad users, go to apple App Store and download :- Planets or SkyView Lite or both.
(Not sure for Android users)

There are other programs out there but I've not tried them as I've only tried what I've mentioned and I find them to be pretty good.

I went to Wikipedia, which had the projected path of the eclipse. While most of the U.S. will see at least a partial one, the total eclipse passes directly overhead before proceeding northeast over Canada's Maritime provinces.

We got to see the recent 2019 Annular Eclipse (shot on my iPhone)

Yeah, if I'd been dressed there's a fairly decent field by a nearby middle school, but I was too tired for that.
Yea, effort must be made for such activities. I remembered I went out on my bicycle at 3am to catch the Leonids 3 years back and every night when Halley's Comet was in town

There is a place that I can go that is about 30km away, with no lights within 3km. The only problem is that I probably would be carried off by the hordes of mosquitoes.
This is a good place to do spotting. Spray lots of mosquito repellents and make sure the place is safe.

Ok I think I will subscribe. I'm going to take a nap today so I can stay up late tonight to try to find a break in the clouds. I have birding binoculars so am sooo hoping!
I've seen the phone apps that show you what you will see in the sky for your location. Pretty cool.

rubysmama rubysmama A katydid/grasshopper type but he did show his back legs, thus the spoiler alert.

The Leonids are famous! Many decades have reported them as spectacular. Centuries worth of reports! Seeing them at dawn is amazing. Some have appeared in other times during daylight and some fireballs come during these showers. They sky is always beautiful to me. Even when dark with clouds. Yesterday we had an interesting sky here. Dark storm clouds were penetrated by ultra bright sunlight.

tabbytom tabbytom That is a site I had found too! It’s a very good one. NASA has some interesting stuff you might enjoy as well. Those photos are stunning. The first has a heart shaped opening in the cloud cover below the eclipse! :) The second shot is very dramatic. Nature at a very beautiful moment. Riding a bicycle at 3 A.M. shows great determination! It also sounds like great fun!

N NY cat man Being carries off by mosquitos is something I can relate to very well! Being carried off by anything else? No! I don’t know about the mosquitoes there but the ones here just use a straw to get past any repellant. The deer flies hurt more. I like my mosquito net hat. It’s very effective against bugs but not so much against bullets. I think I would opt for viewing this on YouTube or other sites. Lots of photos and videos are popping up now.

Lari Lari There are some wonderful
Pictures out now. Tired is not surprising considering everything right now. Unless you really feel up to it, rest might be the priority. It is exciting to see though if you feel like having an outing.

pearl99 pearl99 The binoculars really help. It can be seen without them but not as well. That first night I found it and then used the binoculars. We’ve had clouds ever since or light pollution. It’s worth staying up for if the sky is clear. Even if you can’t spot it, the sky is beautiful and it makes for a nice peaceful outing. I hope you get to see it. Stay in a secure location.

Furballsmom Furballsmom I did a nod to that one too! It is a prime example of the species. Even Banjo was impressed. The last time she saw one she vacated the window and gave me ,” the look!” Kodiak wasn’t fooled though. She still wants Froggie attention. Lol With a half dozen frogs on the window, they all want the Prince! Lol

The place I spoke of is actually farmland that the state bought up in the 50s and 60s to use for flood control. I knew most of the people that lived there- among them Michele's grandparents- and rode the school bus with some of the kids. Because there are no residents closer than 2 miles away, and it's all back roads, it can be dicey at night, especially if you encounter a poacher.

Yes, it's a good site and they tell you the paths of the stars and Leonids. I'm on NASA too and on the ISS spotter.

I just shoot blindly into the sun as I cannot look directly at it. I predetermine the position and when the clouds opened, I just shoot away hoping to get it and I forgot my ND 400 filter again else I'll can have a good look at it.

Yes, 3am. It's rare to catch the Leonids and they fall fast and plenty.

N NY cat man That sounds like a great viewing spot but very risky. I expect that besides poachers, that could be a place for uncontrolled activities of other kinds. That’s what happened in the wetlands next to me. It was awful for a few years before it was stopped. Everyone living on the border of that land had problems. I am very grateful that all that ended. I still wait to see if the deer and rabbits will ever return. I haven’t seen a fox since then either. The armadillos, raccoons and possums are back though. The owls and hawks too. The land itself will take longer. Off road vehicles did a lot of damage. Maybe the old roads there will be reclaimed by nature and the land their will be less accessible to the poachers. It won’t stop them but it may make it harder and stop other problems from coming in. It’s a shane the land cannot be enjoyed.

tabbytom tabbytom I have spent very early hours watching too. I have a good spot here for watching where I can lay on a blanket and watch meteor showers. Most of the time, that area is very dark. My only visitors have had four legs. Lol I like going there best in the winter when I can bundle up and enjoy the crisp air without bugs! I got some of my Wolf moon pictures there and the rest were taken right by the back of my house. Living here can have draw backs but the pluses are wonderful!

Yea, I remembered a few years back when I was in a neighboring country and in the outskirts away from light pollution, I lay myself on the ground on a cool night and took in the Milky Way in awe! It was out of the world, literally speaking.

Nowadays, I'm just too lazy to go chase stars in the middle of the night

On my many hikes around that land- roughly 10,000 acres- I have seen deer, fox, numerous coyotes, raccoons, a bobcat(!), and black bear droppings, but, thankfully, no Mr. Bear. I make it a point to carry bear spray to deter all manner of varmints- both 2- and 4-legged.
