I got this stuffed bird toy that chirped when the cat bats at it. Neko-chan is afraid of it.
I have something similar and my newest kitten is obsessed with it. Since it's hung over a door, she tries to take it and she's able to get about 10 feet with it before it just won't go any farther and she lets it go and it launches into the kitchen. I had to hide it from her for a while because I was afraid she was going to break something.

Right now Shade likes to fish out a piece of dry dog food from Rebel's bowl and play with it on the kitchen floor. Once done playing he leaves it laying till Noka finds it and plays with it or one of the dogs wanders through the kitchen acting like a roomba.

All of my cats adore this toy called SmartyKat Hot Pursuit. Remy and Flora are playing with it right now. My only gripe is that it doesn't shut off automatically so I can't just leave it on while I go somewhere and know that the batteries won't get drained.

Here's a video of Flora playing with it:

I bought one toy that the cats have never played with. This is not due to them not liking or caring about it. It is due to the big dog "Rebel" not letting the cats play with it. It is a toy mouse that squeaks like a real mouse and he picks it up and carries it to his bed where he lays it between his legs and licks / protects it. He did the same thing when Noka had her surgery (spayed) and came home. He laid down with her between his legs and would not let Shade near her.

Today's toy disaster.....
A few days ago I clicked on the "Todays Deals" thing on Amazon (usually a mistake) and they had a flipping fish cat toy. The videos showed cats going crazy playing with it. 12 inches long and it flips its tail when a cat starts to play with it..... How could I miss with this one? And it was on sale! (right now you are thinking "this guy never learns")

Anyway.... there it sits.
I got taken in by that one too! Although my crew all thought it was a deadly trap out to kill them. Once I took out the motor and stuffed the cavity with catnip it became a favorite toy.

I've pretty much settled on toys should be soft, squishy, and stuffed to the seams with actual catnip. That's the solid winner almost every time. I've probably spent hundreds on other toys that just sit in a basket collecting dust. But if any of the soft squishy catnip toys are in the basket they are swiftly fished out and scattered around the house.

But the cat in the video was having SO MUCH fun with it! Since nobody else here has a cat that likes that sort of thing.... I am beginning to wonder if the cats in those videos are highly trained and paid actors!

Good advice on yanking the mechanism out and stuffing it. Might try that.

I think your actor theory has some truth to it.

My cats loved it! Cats are so different it's hard to know
Does the ripple rug look easy to replicate? I have a rug that looks identical to the ripple rug, looks like just velcro and cut out holes? Does it make crinkly noises? It will cost me $63 to have it in hawaii

It has velcro so you can rearrange it. No crinkly noise.
