Question: I was looking into “kitten litter” or chicken feed to train the kittens... Which do y’all prefer?

Can you switch the scale to grams? That's more accurate and it's easier to see a gain. Most scales have the option.

I use a cat litter made from a soy bean by-product, which is actually edible so no problem if the kittens try to eat it (Which they invariably do.) Not sure if that is available in your area? It's the cheapest litter for sale over here.

Make sure you use a non-clumping litter. If the kittens swallow any clumping litter it can cause a fatal blockage, so bear that in mind when choosing one.

I’ll have to look it up. PetSmart sells kitten litter.

It was my rescue lady scale. She weighed them and wrote down their colors. For her papers or something. I was going to weigh them every other day so I don’t go crazy. The sleep and nurse quite a bit. The runts like to sleep on mama cat neck. It’s adorable. I’ll weigh them again tomorrow and figure out how to put the kitchen scale into grams. It’s new so it should be easy when I set it up. I honestly haven’t really look at it yet.

Grams is better, you'll notice very quickly any loss in weight (which is a good, at that age it's imperative you pick it up quickly if there's a problem).
As for what to put them in.... my furbaby was jumping, climbing and an escape artist at 3 1/2 - 4 weeks.... hes now 5 weeks old and would put a ninja to shame 🤣🤣
Be aware when they are running around, they love to hide and roll up and sleep anywhere dark and warm.... which can be dangerous and fatal. Too often kittens get squashed or trod on accidentally.

His favorite sleeping place now is under my chin 🤣 which means I lay in 1 position all night too petrified to move lol, but completely unable to put him anywhere else because he screams the house down like someone is murdering him when he isn't with me 🙄🙄 #spoilt!!!

Weighing daily and in grams is essential the first 3 weeks. Just because their weights are okay now does not mean things won’t change, because as they grow, they need more milk, and sometimes moms do not have enough for 7 growing kittens and one or two can fall behind quickly.

The goals are 4 ounces at one week, 8 ounces at 2 weeks, 12 ounces at 3 weeks, and 16 ounces (1 pound) at 4 weeks. Then they should continue to gain one pound a month going forward for about 6 months. They'll get their baby teeth around 4 weeks and can begin weening soon after to soft foods.

Any non-clumping litter will do!

That’s what I’m afraid of, I had 4 week old, and then 4 month old, and 2/3 week old who had ringworm, all but Emmy (4 week old) were someone told me about them and didn’t plan to rescue them. But I had once at time young age I have never had 6 newborns even tho they have mama she still needs help with them she’s a young mama and when they cry to feed (they fight over nipples) she panicking and sometimes meow for me. Today I’ll measure for the grams in the afternoon which is a few hours for me and measure them once a day, if they are not gaining I’ll nurse them. They all look bigger and rounder even the runts. Their ears all of started poking out almost looking like kittens, I have one kitten that looks like it’s eyes are opening at times it’s the black runt. The bad thing I have going on sometimes they come to my hand when they try feeding. Which will help if I have to help nurse any of them.

I hope the orange tabby is not nursing! He will take much needed milk from the newborns if so. He also needs to be neutered right now if he’s not already.

He’s not nursing, his date to get fix is tomorrow.

he’s actually afraid of the kittens.

The only cat I have to worry about is my grey male. But since he gotten fix he stays in his bed, he had a hard time, don’t like to be locked up, they told me he cried the whole time. They actually had me get him earlier then normal because it was stressing him out and heopened his stitches. But they gave me a voucher for the ER vet in case we had to take him in. Which the vet work at sometimes.

Update kittens are doing amazing! They are all 7-8 ounces (9days old) both runts and the 2 more have the eyes open. So proud of mama and babies can’t wait til they start playing we have so many toys, I even ordered them more toys on amazon. ❤
