jefferd18 jefferd18 Did any of the tips for the young male work to get him nearer to being trapped? Is he still acting so tough?
I would love to see pictures of the Mom cat. Is this the female you went through so much with last year?
How are you feeling?
r
What young male?? I have been trying to find my older male tom. Oh, I see, you are referring to the young male cat who chased my older tom cat away? I have not seen that cat for a week now. As much as I don't care for him I am hoping nothing bad happened to him. I don't want to see any living creature get hurt- he can't help it.

I wouldn't even begin to know where to set out a trap for him since I don't even know in what direction he comes from when he does decide to grace us with his presence. Same with two other kitties- one beautiful long hair calico and another young male kitty. I also don't know if the kittens are heavy enough to trip the trap. I have to set my sights on getting them because mom cat is getting ready to wean them. After that, they will be on their own.

Thank you tabbytom tabbytom for the Avatar enlargement and the link. I watched it all and will be sending it on to others. I am glad Singapore is taking such a proactive response. I feel many places are not doing such a good job protecting humans. The information about certain populations who are higher risk is something I am aware of and it has long been known that people who live in poverty prone areas are at much higher risk for many things. Air quality being only one factor but an important one. I just received a notice that testing is available in the county next to the one where I live. I don’t know how widespread it is since I only got the notice through a medical emergency center that I happened to have used in the past. I am hoping that things are going to be improving in that area.

Our population is small but statistic on cases is high but our death toll is the lowest as compared to the US, We have total 33,249 cases and fatalities is only 23 and they’re the elderlies.

rubysmama rubysmama rubysmama rubysmama A doctor? That is hard to understand. Was he just visiting or practicing his profession? I know doctors are often the first to be exposed but didn’t he have access to testing or ????? Something?
That's the thing. From what I've read, he "lied" about his reason for travelling outside the province, implying it was work when it was actually for pleasure. So when he returned, he wasn't advised to isolate, and went back to work at the ER of a hospital. He saw at least 100 patients over 2 weeks, plus was in contact with 50 health care workers. Yesterday 3 more cases were confirmed. There will likely be more. So unbelievable, especially from a doctor!

There are many reasons given for reopening but the risk is still present and many won’t even follow the safe distancing rules. As long as people return to the way things were, many are at high risk. I will continue to stay home as much as possible.
I'm still staying home most of the time, despite things starting to reopen. I know the businesses need customers, but at the same time, I don't want to risk getting infected, and possibly being one of the unlucky ones who gets more than mild symptoms.

I think he survived. Lol

Awww... poor Ducky. Great picture though. :)

(btw, SG stands for Singapore in short)
I was wondering what the SG stood for, and wondered if it was the cat's name. Does the cat have a name?

So you want a cat blanket that purrs?
I had a dream that I adopted a Tortie and named her Cinnamon. I like that idea...

I agree about lifting each other up. A crane!!! Will do!
Thanks. I might need it. ;)

I would turn them all into cats and they would instantly be lovable. ;) Spayed and neutered, of course.lol
That would be convenient. Snip snip....

I will continue to stay home as much as possible.
My dentist canceled on me! They aren't opened back up yet. Looks like I'm staying home until June 15 vet visit. 🐈

jefferd18 jefferd18 Yes, I was wondering about the young Tom as well as O’Malley. With the young Tom gone I am hoping there will be more sightings of O’Malley. How many kitties are present now? Are you still in the position of trying to trap more cats? Can you give us an update on everything there?

I guess I'm submerged in bad news, often, as I work in feline advocacy, human advocacy and environmental advocacy, so I have to read a lot of news and information that would curl most people's toenails. And since I'm a true crime aficionado, it's also a choice of downtime activities for me. (And no, I'm not depressed; and yes, I make it a point to laugh every day.) But it is tempting to feel like giving up, sometimes, when the big picture is laid bare for us to see. Ignorance, thoughtlessness, uncaring, lack of compassion and kindness, basic "human decency" (whatever that is! I used to know. But it's so UNcommon now as to be almost nonexistent), violence, hatred, intolerance...I could go on and on, but I really don't want to. My work, and my philosophy of life, is always geared toward saving who/what can be saved, and trying to educate, by example and otherwise, those who are receptive. Drop some seeds and they may germinate, now or in the future.
Some scientists believe COVID-19 will never be eradicated, and I agree, based on my observations of people and their actions. As long as it's more important for (some) people to gratify their selfish impulses, this virus will be with us. As long as authorities don't enforce the orders given by those who truly know what a killer scourge this is, these people will run rampant and in essence, bully the rest of us.
That's the facts.
But yes, Singapore, from what I've heard, is a very well-run society, all in all. (Most) Americans would never agree to live like people there do. They want their "rights"!!! :sigh: no matter who suffers as a result. And yes, lives will be, are, and have been compromised.
Jcatbird Jcatbird "The ferals" are so, so sweet and adorable! And of course, Banjo has a star smile! I empathize about your foray to the store. My store is like that, too, and since I don't go often and need to get survival supplies, I've had to brave the maskless, aggressive people to get what I need, saying a Prayer that I will be unscathed. I've always thought of life as a minefield, and it is now more than ever. The positive part is that so far, I've been able to avoid stepping on a mine. Taking each day, hour, and minute as it comes is the only way, for me.
Jcatbird Jcatbird , there is a refurb Dyson deal on right now at newegg.com but for some reason I'm unable to copy and past the URL for it. If you go there you may be able to find it but it's only on for a few more hours.

jefferd18 jefferd18 The young male is probably after another female. He could be anywhere during mating season. They wander far and wide. I still keep wondering where else they could be getting food though. The appear but the vanish which makes me think someone may be feeding an outside cat or dog if not leaving some other source of food. Dumpsters near restaurants are often a source for animals. Trash cans and trash dump sites too. They find something. Trapping kittens is a bit different since weight matters. Each trap is a little different but to determine the trip weight try experimenting with things you have that show weight like a small bag of sugar or anything that will help you to guess if the kittens are big enough to trip the trap. You have to estimate the weight of the kittens. I expect we can try to do that if you know approximate age but it will be a guess. Small animal traps trip more easily like for a squirrel but I used regular cat traps and kittens tripped them most of the time. You can make it a little easier to trip by placing a very light object on the trip plate that will not set it off but add to the pressure when a kitten steps on it. I have also rigged them with a way to trip it by me pulling a string to tip over a water bottle and close the door. Of course that means you must be present. I have used verrrrry long pieces of string. You must be very fast to do this efficiently but it can work.

You know Calicos are something certain members really love! The calico would be my target for trapping besides kittens since it is almost surely female. I know the young male might be one to keep O’Malley away too though.
If you don’t know where to set the trap when it comes to any cat, along the edges of buildings, under shrubbery that could provide a hidden pathway and any place that can give privacy during travel.
Please keep us updated.
If anyone else can add tips, please do.

My one question is how much do kittens need to be in order to trip a trap?- they are not big kittens. She had four this time and they are not as big as her previous litter was.

I don't know if he is truly gone or if he is just laying low because none of the females are in heat. Until a month ago I had never laid eyes on that cat. He will just fly out of nowhere usually targeting a specific cat to torment. O'Malley is smart, he knows he is too old to fight that cat. He didn't live all of these years by being risky. I do still worry about him.

I only have the one trap so it makes things more difficult.

jefferd18 jefferd18 I am working on your answer. To determine the weight we need to guess age too. First let me post this link that shows how kitten features change with age. Take a look at the photos of you don’t know their age because this really helps. How to Determine a Kitten's Age — Kitten Lady

jefferd18 jefferd18 If they are near weaning age I can only guess that they are approaching a pound but many ferals weigh much less, depending on health and various food factors. At 12 weeks Wanda Heart finally weighed 3 pounds and I was pouring the food into her. I just dug through old records and found one four week old (sick) kitten that was .7 of a pound. I had also been pouring food into that baby but lost that battle. I would say to try using a quarter of a box of salt from the store to see if that trips the trap. (A box of salt that I got out of my kitchen weighs a pound.) I know having only one trap is a challenge. Believe me, I know. If there is any way to rig the trap so that you trip it, things get easier because you can wait until all kittens are inside. Using small bits of food to get them eating a super tiny trail into the trap helps. That buys time to attract more at once. Something that takes time to eat, like lickable stuff , baby food meat is a good one. Putting just a little smear here and there leading into the back where it is smeared across a dish rather than heaped in a dish. Make them lick a lot! Two kittens on a trip plate are more likely to shut the door. I hope something here helps. Keep the food far away from the door.
Suspending a partially filled water bottle from a string and just barely above the trip plate makes it so that you can release the string to drop the bottle. If it is barely above the plate, it won’t fall with enough force to hurt a kitten but the weight will push the trip plate down. Experiment first! You can experiment to find the weight needed and use a very, very long string so that you can be far enough away that the kitties will enter.

tabbytom tabbytom The statistics there are much better than here. I hope that Singapore will demonstrate to all how to handle the situation. :redheartpump:

rubysmama rubysmama It is mind boggling that a doctor would be so careless. It’s a very sad thing. I hope there will not be anymore cases. Do stay home as much as you can. I am too. If I could be completely off the grid, I would be. I have always wanted to do that and to some degree did that in younger days but the idea of having to farm enough now that I am older seems very difficult. Our ancestors were pretty amazing!

The little ducky survived quite well. It’s good that ducks like water!

Maybe Tabbytom could find a name for SG.

M maggiedemi I think you dreamed about a Cinnamon Muffin!

My right shoulder may be out but my left can still lift. ;) The kitties would help if needed.

You like that snipping idea? Lol Me too!

Your dentist cancelled? I hear of a lot of cancellations but if it becomes painful or swells, let them know they need to see you on an emergency basis or send you to someone who can see you. There is something sold over the counter that I keep here. It is called “Red Cross toothache kit”. It is just a small bottle of liquid oil of cloves.Tiny cotton balls come with it to use to dab the liquid on the offending tooth if pain is bad. Ask your dentist via phone or email if this is okay to have on hand. June 15 th is not terribly far off. Hang in there. :hugs:

tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 I am so sorry you are submerged in so much right now. It’s hard to deal with all that is going on and doing the work you do does not make it any easier. I send my heart and extra breath to you. Don’t drown under all that! :vibes:🌬:redheartpump: I want to remind you that nature will step in. Those who expose themselves can be lost and may expose others but those who can hold on, hole up and stay the course will be the survivors. Patience, intelligence, will power all play a part as nature weeds out the rest. I think that there may come something good out of all of this. It may be a hard lesson but restoring respect for life and our environment may be the end result. Nature always kicks in to right wrongs. Let’s hope that humans understand that quickly.

For now, we continue with our precious ones. They need our advocacy. They return it ten fold.

I don’t know if I missed the Dyson deal! Aaargh! Lol I will look. I have been trying to remove parts of a fallen tree! I am really tired and could only use one arm so I didn’t accomplish a lot. Lol we do what we can. It was blocking my driveway but a neighbor finally do my pitiful attempts and cleared enough so the I have a path. A bit of human decency! It still exists. :hugs:

Mamanyt1953 Mamanyt1953 So very good to see you! I know you are worried about Little Bit. Knowing the way that ferals do, I feel sure she is just practicing feral distancing right now. She is a very smart kitty. With a new litter, that is exactly what she should instinctively do. Cats are much smarter than humans. That’s why we are here to serve them. Hekitty would certainly back me up on that. :hugs:

 My dear impatient Lady! She couldn’t wait for my help with the harness. Lol She did get her garden walk. Of course most of the time she wanted to be carried.

I noticed when I tried to fasten the harness, she has gotten fluffier! :headscratch: I wonder if she is brushing herself too?

Have a great night everyone! :heartshape:
