Furminator - does it cut hair?

Hi,

I have two male Ragdoll kittens who love being groomed. They both just sit up on a pillow on my lap and purr and lick themselves as I groom away.

Quick question, the furminator website says that the tool is suitable for a Ragdoll. I have read elsewhere that it actually cuts hair and leaves long haired cats looking a bit worse for wear. In your experiences, is this actually the case?

I’m debating with myself whether or not to get one.

No, it does not cut hair.

I have one and it's amazing. Removes all the detached hairs that stay in the undercoat of my cats. Never had it cut their hair.

No, it's very effective at grabbing on to the hair. It's great for cutting down on shedding. The fur should be free of tangles and mats beforehand though, as it's not meant to be used for that. And it is possible to overdo it. If you've removed most of the loose fur and continue to brush I have heard that it can be damaging to the coat, so limit furminator sessions to about once a week.

The Furminator is a great tool but not for all cats. We have a Mane Coon and most people suggest not using it for this breed due to their multi-layered coat as it does tend to pull out their undercoat too much plus, their coats tangle easily and for the most part, combing is what's recommended along with mat cutters or raking tools if need be.

I do use it on our long hair domestic cat, who has a different type of coat - her's the same texture all over, kind of fine and does not tend to mat much but needs to have excess fur taken off her. The Furminator is perfect for her.

I personally would look up some Ragdoll sites and/or forums and see what others are using. It would be a shame to ruin your kittens coat with a tool that is too harsh for it.

Haha. Not to worry - those Coons from Maine sport quite the mane. It all makes sense!
