Even in New York there are occasional crowds forming. I saw pictures of people watching the Navy hospital ship coming in. I know that ship is something to see, at least from pictures and video that I have seen but come on people.

Hope you didn't attend any super-spreading events.

Days After a Funeral in a Georgia Town, Coronavirus ‘Hit Like a Bomb’

It was an old-fashioned Southern funeral.

There was a repast table crammed with casseroles, Brunswick stew, fried chicken and key lime cake. Andrew Jerome Mitchell, a retired janitor, was one of 10 siblings. They told stories, debated for the umpteenth time how he got the nickname Doorface.

People wiped tears away, and embraced, and blew their noses, and belted out hymns. They laughed, remembering. It was a big gathering, with upward of 200 mourners overflowing the memorial chapel, so people had to stand outside.

Ive been using cctalk, classin and zoom. All of these have english versions. I like cctalk the most so far- you can record the classes and the video stays on the server. Classin lags too much and is unstable. Zoom is ok for small classes or meetings
I had my first online class with Zoom this afternoon and it was okay. I'm a college student though, so not sure if the situation would differ to high/secondary school students. Let me know how your classes go, though! :)

They haven't ruled out reinfection. There are people who were infected, tested negative and are testing positive again. So far they think it's more likely they were false negatives rather then actually recovered. But there was a monkey study that shows that short term reinfection isn't possible, COVID-19 Reinfection Not a Concern, Monkey Study Suggests

My Friday classes are via Zoom as well and another one of my instructors is going to try it as well.

My only concern with it is that there has been a few issues in terms of privacy. 😔

I think this is attributable to false negatives. I have seen a number of articles that the testing used up to this point is far from 100%. They are working on titer tests to find people who have had this with little to no symptoms and have developed immunity. I seen one doctor that said that the pneumonia that many patients are developing is actually caused by inflammation from the immune response. That was what caused the high death rate with the Spanish Flu which was very close to bird flu.

That would make the most sense in terms of the false negative. I don't know if the inflammation is the reason for the high pneumonia, just because in Spanish flu they saw high mortality in children because of that. Stronger immune systems were dying more and I think we are seeing weaker immune systems hit harder in this case. Lots of cancer survivors or current cancer patients from the death reports I've been seeing.... but totally my uneducated observation there.

They are starting a DNA study too thinking that people with severe reactions have a slight variation to the receptor that the virus connects with. I think that the difference in country impact is a driver behind the belief that it is genetic for why some people get hit hard and others just asymptomatic.

Genetics could well play a role. Men are hit slightly harder then women. When we only had sketchy data from China they thought it was the smoking rate. A lot of men in China smoke and very few women smoke. That difference has carried through to other countries as well.

I think we are going to find a lot of closet smokers or vapers are in the hard hit category too. I know when vaping started to show really bad side effects there were teenagers and young adults getting sicks whose families didnt even know they vaped.

Genetics or smoking would make equal amount as sense in contributing factors.

Although this has not been completely proven. It seems there is some truth to "the man cold". Studies have shown that testosterone is an immunosuppressant where as estrogen helps the immune system. Which is why some men experience the symptoms of cold worse then women (on average). Estrogen actually slows how quickly viruses multiply in the body. So IF this is indeed true, it would not be too far of a stretch to think that viruses that are even somewhat related to the common cold (the corona-virus), could affect men worse than women, especially men with high testosterone levels.

I'm sorry there have been some issues in terms of privacy. I've had a couple zoom classes for personal finance. The first time almost everyone had their video up, but the next couple classes only I shared my video. Wondering if students are half paying attention since they don't want their video on, but maybe just a comfort level thing. Are you required to share video during the zoom classes?

My school also has some activities and talks over Zoom. Today I attended a talk about creating a side hustle. My school is small, and only I an two staff members joined, haha. I enjoyed it.

My county is the second highest in Illinois, with 343 cases, although I am very close to the cook county border, which has the most cases at 3,727 and is where Chicago is located. (I live about an hour away from Chicago).

An emergency alert message also came through my phone within the past hour with the message, "Likely State needs licensed healthcare workers to sign-up at IllinoisHelps.net to fight Covid-19." That makes me pretty nervous... I hope the message will bring in the help they need, or anticipate to need.

It depends on who you listen to re: masks. I've always believed it's logical to wear one, because everyone opening their mouth releases droplets into the air. So if you are sick, this is a more or less effective barrier, depending on the type of mask, to protect others. It is also, by the same principle, a more or less effective barrier between a sick person and you if you are not sick. I will always wear a mask when going out to the grocery store until this pandemic is over. Glasses or sunglasses are more or less effective as well, because the virus can enter through the eyes.

Here are some really nice masks. Some are sold out, but some are in stock.

You must live in Lake Co. with 389 cases now and 2 deaths. I'm in DuPage, and we have 356 cases with 10 deaths. It's really dangerous to go out. One of those deaths was a pastor of a nearby church. Look at all those little dots in rural areas.

Yeah, my academy is using Zoom currently and then we have our own internal e-learning system that was already in place before all of this where students can turn in their homework and take quizzes. We are managing with at most 8 kids in a zoom meeting, but public schools have 30 kids per class...all of whom are expected to show up, although I think they are now leaning towards having pre-recorded lectures so kids can follow at their own pace. Lecture style teaching is still common place here, even for elementary kids.

Bands that had started scheduling events for mid-April have now started pushing them back again. I'm guessing the government will renew the distancing campaign, as it is slated to finish this weekend. We just had another big group get infected (another church!) in Seoul.

The presidential election is slated for April 15th still. They really don't want to move it but are thinking about accepting ballots at more different locations to prevent crowding at the polls. Election Day is technically a national holiday here, but it's not required to give time off, so as a place that mostly has foreign workers who can't vote, we don't get the day off :(

I'm in Cook. Whoo, #1 (grew up in DuPage, though). My sister works out in I think Kendall and last I heard they weren't taking it super serious out in the more rural areas yet. Hopefully they'll start.

Yup. It is dangerous to go out... I'm really lucky I don't need to leave the house, and my family normally orders groceries online to get put straight into the car. But I know this may not be possible for everyone, or they may be considered essential and have to work. Positive thoughts to you and everyone else to keep staying safe and well.

My best friend started feeling sick today. I talked to her yesterday and she told me that she flew back to Texas to pick up her cat who someone was watching and drive back to North Carolina to stay with her family. She made the whole trip back in one drive  and is hoping she is just tired from traveling too much and her allergies are sparking up, but she does have a cough, fever, sneezing and headache... She is self-quarantining for 14 days, just in case. It made me cringe when I heard she flew, etc., but I tried to be supportive because she was driving home by the time we talked and told her everything would be fine. That she would be fine and didn't catch anything. Although, if she is sick with it, it doesn't mean she got it while traveling and could have picked it up sometime before.

Korea is now requiring all out of country travelers to quarantine. My Korean friend just arrived home from Belgium, and she got her self-quarantine kit yesterday after getting tested. Everyone who enters the country has to download an app that tracks their movements and to which they have to upload their temperature readings daily. If they miss a day, they get a call from the government. The kit includes masks, sanitizer, and a thermometer.

They have been catching foreigners who did not self-quarantine and now are trying to decide whether to fine them or deport them (deporting is hard because of flight shortages) Short-term visitors have to stay at a government facility for 2 weeks, but will have to pay their own expenses (~$82/day).
