Germany and Spain's numbers are really climbing with new cases. Especially with Germany with 38 new cases confirmed just today.

This year's flu may be worse than coronavirus
Unlikely. We generally do a pretty good job with flu vaccines, and even when people catch it the death rate from flu is much lower. How does the new coronavirus compare with the flu? | Live Science

I have had pain in my chest for a few days so I went to the doc....I have walking pneumonia! I am now on 3 days of prednisone and 10 days of antibiotics. Glad I went. Theo is upset that I can't play like normal....daddy has no energy....
I'm very glad you went in; I'm old enough to remember Jim Henson's death, from walking pneumonia. I'd rather not lose any other people that way.

We have a new case in Canada who contracted the virus who recently returned from Iran. So much for limiting travel from only certain areas of China to limit the spread..:ruminating:
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/coronavirus-bc-update-1.5470757
Iran's had a bad outbreak in one of their holy cities, and has declined to limit travel to that city. They're also having an extremely high mortality rate with this one, largely (IMO) because of the renewed sanctions the U.S. imposed, which may be leaving people half starved and which are making it hard for them to get medical supplies.

I do wish China would open up more and be completely transparent. As the epicenter that is where we need to get all the possible data about this.
:yeah:

The CDC is warning the U.S. that chances are good that there will be community outbreaks in the U.S.
We're already seeing them.

"Potentially making it even harder to eradicate, a growing number of discharged coronavirus patients in China and elsewhere are testing positive again, sometimes weeks after being allowed to leave the hospital."

Now that's something. Virus can relapse.

Global downturn looms as countries struggle to contain coronavirus outbreak
It may not be a "relapse"; it may be re-infection. I saw a website the other day where a blogger was advising people to go out and deliberately get infected with COVID-19, in order to develop a lifelong immunity, which obviously doesn't happen! I won't post a link here, because it's just about the worst advice around. The mortality rate with a first infection of COVID-19 is around 2%, but I've heard a report that the mortality rate with a second infection is around 30%!

School-wise, kids are being kept out of school until next week. I work at a private academy and we are having our teachers film video lessons to send to the kids.
Obviously, we want to (and should) protect our kids, but I've heard reporters asking the question "Why aren't children being infected?" I suspect that children may be the least vulnerable to this one.

I ran into this very interesting article today: Could an old malaria drug help fight the new coronavirus?.

An interesting article on the Washington outbreak

“Scientists not affiliated with the research said the results did not necessarily surprise them and pointed out that for many people — especially younger, healthier ones — the symptoms are not much worse than a flu or bad cold.

“We think that this has a pretty high rate of mild symptoms and can be asymptomatic. The symptoms are pretty non-specific and testing criteria has been pretty strict, so those combinations of factors means that it easily could have been circulating for a bit without us knowing,” said Justin Lessler, an associate professor of epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.”

Well, kids with strong immune systems should be fine. They probably are getting it, but are healthy and young enough to fight it off pretty easily. The risk then isn't to the child, but you know especially in Asia, multi-generational living is commonplace. Therefore, the kids might be fine, but if they infect their grandparents...well.

Also, so many children in Asian cities suffer from asthma due to pollution, anything involving respiratory illnesses is worrisome. And Korea especially has such a low birthrate that no one wants to even take the risk (this also has to do with the lasting effects of the Sewol ferry disaster that saw the deaths of nearly 300 high schoolers, parents demand the government do whatever it can to protect children, which in this case is to keep them at home)

I just found out about this drug today from a youtuber Dr. John Campbell(which i suggest checking him out), and according to this article. they found that it works.

In the early in vitro studies, chloroquine was found to block COVID-19 infection at low-micromolar concentration, with a half-maximal effective concentration of 1.13 μM and a half-cytotoxic concentration (CC50) greater than 100 μM. A number of subsequent clinical trials have been quickly conducted in China to test the efficacy and safety of chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of COVID-19 associated pneumonia in more than 10 hospitals in Wuhan, Jingzhou, Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, and Ningbo.
Thus far, results from more than 100 patients have demonstrated that chloroquine phosphate is superior to the control treatment in inhibiting the exacerbation of pneumonia, improving lung imaging findings, promoting a virus-negative conversion, and shortening the disease course according to the news briefing. Severe adverse reactions to chloroquine phosphate were not noted in the aforementioned patients. Given these findings, a conference was held on February 15, 2020; participants including experts from government and regulatory authorities and organizers of clinical trials reached an agreement that chloroquine phosphate has potent activity against COVID-19. The drug is recommended for inclusion in the next version of the Guidelines for the Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Pneumonia Caused by COVID-19 issued by the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China.

Breakthrough: Chloroquine phosphate shows efficacy in COVID-19 associated pneumonia

trump talking about the virus. he seems to be taking it more seriously than before. The woman who
died was in a nursing facility and was unwell before she contracted the virus.

Trump Moves to Calm Fears as First U.S. Death From Coronavirus Is Reported
This information is incorrect and was known to be wrong when Trump was on camera. It was being correctly reported as he was giving his press conference on other channels and has been confirmed since.
The person who died was male, in his 50's and was not in a nursing facility or any other similar facility.
He was, however, in a compromised state of health.

I'm not concerned about it to be honest. I'm youngish, have access to healthcare and since I work with the public, I'm already very adamant about hand washing and not touching my face. The people most at risk are the immune-compromised and those without easy access to healthcare.
Eta: I'm not saying there aren't people who should be concerned but a large majority of people are overreacting in my opinion.

Well, I took the last antibiotic on Saturday morning. I am calling doc when office opens at 8AM. The cough is coming back and my chest is sore like before but, it's only on right side this time. Lymph nodes are swollen too and sore. Pneumonia is a tough opponent!
Glad I have my buddy for company.

So far 16,000 people have died and 280,000 people have been hospitalized from the REGULAR 2019 flu season. Just like with any flu, there will be some who get worse than others, just like some get much worse with West Nile. This flu maybe a little more fatal, but less so than many in the past. All cases of flu make you feel miserable, this one is no exception. If you are worried or panicked, stay home more, wash your hands much more and keep them away from your face. If we had reported all 16,000 that had died last year as tehy happened, we would be in the same spot we are now........

I'm not worried about Michele or me, as even though we fall into the 'elderly' category, we are in good health. I am worried, however, about her brother. He has been undergoing chemo for his agent orange- related non-Hodgkins lymphoma, so his white cells are, for all intents, non-existent, as is his immune system. If he catches it, or even the 'regular' flu, his chances are nil.

The problem with me is that, I thought my chest was sore from sleeping mostly on my stomach. I can't lay for long on my back due to the kidney pain. I ignored it too long and allowed it to set up shop in my lungs. Now I am aware of how hard it is to heal from pneumonia. It deals quite a blow to your whole body. Pneumonia kills! I am 63 and soon to be 64 and I still fall back into thinking I am indestructable like I did in my younger days. PKD gives me a compromised immune system so I need to be more careful.

GaryT GaryT hoping you are feeling better.

Last year, around this time, I came down with asthmatic bronchitis/pneumonia.

It hit me hard. I had to take 2 rounds of antibiotics, different ones, a steroid, albuterol inhaler, and codeine cough Med, before it disappeared.

I am as sick for over a month.

I know how you feel. All I wanted to eat was as potato chips, ice cream, chocolate and chicken soup.

What seems to help is making a ginger tea. If you can get some fresh ginger, peel, cut into pieces, boil in a good amount of water.. I add honey, sometimes lemon. I kept it I. The refrigerator, heatyup in microwave, whey I wanted it.

Good luck. Wishing you well.

Rest, keep your head up, drink lots of fluids, and follow doc's orders!! Your body needs rest to heal. Don't push it and if you
need groceries, etc, please have them delivered. You shouldn't tax yourself being out and about!!💖
