Hello all,
So, I just found one of my cat teeth on the floor. She had absolutely no signs of any unconfort in her mouth, no change in her eating habits...
I'm chocked, don't know what to do or think.
She's 2 years old.
Is this normal?
Has anyone experienced anything like that?

Thank you!!

Hi!
When is the last time you had her in to the vet? I don't believe this is normal. Can you have an appointment with a vet scheduled?

It could be a piece of tartar. Lily had a piece that looked like a long horizontal tooth. The vet saw it and knocked it off. It looked a lot like what you're seeing. You might take the piece to the vet and see what they say.

I took her in about 3 weeks ago. I will call the vet tomorrow.

Thank you

If it is a tooth, it could have broken off or had been "reabsorbed". It is common in younger cats and very painful. I just had to have my cat have one removed because he was grinding his teeth from pain. You couldn't tell until the vet looked at the x-ray that his tooth nerves were being exposed under the gum line causing pain. It's a weird thing that only happens to cats, and they aren't sure why.

It could be a broken tooth. Maybe zoomies went wrong and she hit somewhere or bit something too hard. Once my Hima slipped during her zoomies run and hit one side of her face to the wall really fast. Also when I realized there is no way to 100% cat proof a house 🤦‍♀️

It happened the same to my cat last week. She was chasing the rubber ball I was playing with, she couldn't brake on the tiles and crashed her head against the hard side of the sofa.
She was kind of confused and stunned for a minute or so, but then she resumed the chase.

Losing a tooth during a hard playing it is quite easy.

GGG GGG , do you see a missing tooth in your cat's mouth? Any sign of distress, blood?

I'm thinking the same thing, maybe rough playing. When she plays or wants to play she goes CRAZY running around and jumping on everything....
No signs of distress or blood. I couldn't check her mouth very well but I think we saw a gap of a missing tooth in the bottom.

And now to top it up, she found a piece of thread ( from clothing)on the floor and I think she ate it...

I'm so frustrated and worried,
Not to long ago she got diagnosed with hyperesthesia and now this....

I assume she won't let you check her mouth, will she?
The one in the photo looked like a canine tooth to me, but it could be a premolar if you see a gap at the bottom.

Dealing with a cat, young or senior, is just like dealing with a 4 yo kid, we have to keep our eyes wide open, always.

My Hima goes outside, I promise every single time she injured herself it happened at home. Outside she's always careful and alert to what she does, her surroundings... At home it's "WOOHOO I WILL RUN WHEREVER AND BITE WHATEVER". :runaround: I keep going

Good luck to us all.

She doesn't let me but I think it's a canine.

We sure have to keep our eyes wide open but sometimes these kitties are so fast.

If you think it's a canine, it should rather easy to check her mouth. Have her to meow and check it, or give her something to chew, like a toy or a piece of cardboard. You could be able to see if a front tooth is missing.
Thank you!
But if that's the case, should I take her to the vet?

Another thing is worrying me is that I think she ate a piece of clothing thread. She's not showing any signs of sickness or change in her activity level... but I'm worried

As for the tooth, unless she shows some symptom of distress, pain, difficulty at eating or bleeding, I'd say that your vet can't do anything.
Or, you can call your vet and tell them what happened and see if they advise you to do something or if any kind of medication (including antibiotics for an exposed wound) is needed.

As for the clothing thread, well, that could be much more worrying. I don't know what a normal visit could do. A thread is invisible to an x-ray or US scan...
A vet could give some advice on that.

I will call the vet's office when it's open.

We've had two cats lose teeth, though we never found them! One cat lost a fang and we noticed it when she yawned or meowed. We have no idea how long it had been missing. One of the two cats we have now lost a tooth and our vet noticed it when Ireland had a dental cleaning.

All of which is to say that I don't think it's uncommon at all for cats to lose teeth like that. We don't know how either cat lost a tooth but Ireland pulls hard on her back claws when she's grooming so I wonder if that played a part. (I seem to recall that Brooksie chewed her back claws a lot, too.)

Please, let us know what the vet will tell you.
Hello just to update you...
The vet saw Skye, she has all of her teeth ( nothing missing) in beautiful condition. The one I found it was actually a baby's canine tooth. We think that was stock on one of the couches or somewhere in the house and it just appeared ( I have no idea). I was happy to hear that and actually take a good look at her teeth.

The vet checked skye's mouth to see if there was a thread tangled at the bottom of her tongue, that was clear too, she examined Skye and everything is normal. She advised me to keep an eye on Skye just in case things change. She said that most of the time cats pass them when the litter box is used and said, if I see it... not to pull it, to take Skye in ( just so no damage is created)
Please, let us know what the vet will tell you.
