Yards...like 'em, hate 'em, itch to make gardens, could not care less?

I've never had a place where I could actually garden. That may be just as well, as I can kill a plastic philodendron in a week, flat. HOWEVER...I do have dreams, oh, yes I do. Not of pristine yards. Those hold no charms for me. BUT...Had I the time, the money, and someone to guide me along the way, I'd LOVE a backyard that looked like a forest glade, with a stepping stone path, and a waterfall and creek (artificial, but real water would do), and a corner for a Moon Garden with all while blooms, and another for a Cat Garden, with a statue of Bastet, surrounded by plants that cats love. And of COURSE a corner of the creek would wander through this part, so that a thirsty cat could wet its tongue just as nature meant it to! OH, and camellia bushes. I adore camellia bushes. And a little patch of herbs, just enough for me.

Love em! Odd for a kid who grew up scared of plants right? That’s a long story for another day.

I love my yard. It was one of the things that sold DH and I on this house. It was new construction but the builder left all the mature trees. We ended up having to cut all the pines down (14!) because they were dying rapidly. We also took down one large silver maple because it had a rotten section DH didn’t want falling on the house. (I resisted that one!!)

But we’ve added a lot to the yard. The house had no landscaping. We added veggie gardens, rose bushes, lilacs, a shade garden, hanging and potted blooms, lillies, hydrangea, some evergreens. Last year I had something thing 24/25 potted flowers. I seem to add just one more every year. ;)😋

The yard is way too big to copy what my aunt has done in her yard. Hers is a postage stamp size that looks like it belongs in Birds & Blooms. But I love it. It feels like looking into a park in the summer. It’s not TOO fussy. Adding a Golden Retriever or two for the kids to play with would be great. So yep; I love my gardens. Plus; is there anything like a home-grown tomato?!:yummy:

I used to have a small but pretty in the front and back but I am no longer able to do that, so I have a few
hanging baskets and Nicole gives me some potted plants. I tried growing Cherry tomatoes and Heirloom
last summer. Cherrys did well but the Heirlooms were an epic fail. Will try again this year, about 2 plants.

I like them but have no desire to be a gardener. Which works out because I have no talent for it whatsoever. If I simply walk through the garden section of a store, I can hear the plants weeping and begging for mercy. "Please DON'T take us home. We're too young to die." :help:

Ah, be quiet. I was just cutting through. :rolleyes2:

I love plants and have a beautiful park-like acre around my house. Also garden enough to sell at farmer's market. We'll be moving this summer to 9 acres, so have to start all over again. You can bet I'll be taking my favorites with me! My daughter always brings me her failing plants, she can kill anything.
I have found over the years to stick with the favorites of your area and time zone. Marigolds, zinnias, moss rose, and cone flowers are very hardy and come back every year by seed (cone flower plants come back and also have hundreds of babies) I won't have such an extensive garden and flower beds with paths, rock gardens and ponds like I do, I am getting too old to keep up with it all. But you can bet what I have will be beautiful. I already have a Japenese Maple on order for a spot that is sheltered and it will be next to a rock pond with a fountain. Then I just go from there!

My dad has a garden. I used to help him work in it when I was little, but I don't anymore.
When I live on my own, I probably won't have a garden unless I'm married to somebody who can teach me how to do it. It's just much easier to go to the grocery store. I would love to grow some hot peppers though!

We have a little over an acre of land, a little over 1-1/3 acres. With several flowerbeds that have now seen better days. They need a complete makeover. And I'll be working on some landscaping and a small flower garden around the front of the shed.
We used to have a small truckpatch garden, but it has been reduced. Last year, Rick wanted to put out a garden, but got sidetracked. He's planning on a small vegetable garden this summer. I hope we can put one out.

We're big tree-lovers, too, so we have a lot of them planted in our yard. We lost ten trees over the last few years, due to big wind storms that toppled mature trees when the soil was so wet, their roots couldn't hang on. We've been slowly replacing them, but we'll never live long enough to see the new trees come to maturity.

I grew up on a farm, and we always had vegetable gardens, but for the first 33 years of married life we rented, so no yard or garden for us. For the last 15 years we have slowly been transforming our 50x100 foot lot into something to be proud of, as we relearn those things forgotten over time. Maybe someday.................

I have a double level retaining wall that runs through the back yard and that is my main garden area. It’s been in for around ten years now but still a work in progress. I mostly have perennials but some flourish and some die off every year so I am always experimenting with the mix and flowering timing of them. I also use the space between them to grow a few vegetables. It is all beautiful to look at, relatively easy to keep up during the summer but a big job in spring and fall to clean up.

I had a wonderful vegetable garden in our last house but the soil in our present house has a lot of clay so my veggies did not do well. I have perennials in the back corners of the yard and along the side of the house. 🌻

I am admittedly not the gardner in the family. That would be my hubby, and he does an awesome job at it!I will pickle, jam and freeze whatever he grows...he dries my herbs for me,bless his heart...but a green thumb is not my forte. As for the yard,I am the one who does the mowing thru the season, and I do enjoy it,although it does kick my allergies up a notch.I don't want him to do everything.

I'd love to have a beautifully cared for garden full of flowers. I have enough room for one, but I live in the middle of a pine forest and very few things can cope with the lack of sunlight and whatever it is pine trees do to the soil.

I've decided to let native plants take over, but I'm going to lay down some wood chip paths so it's easier to stroll around. The ferns are beautiful, and the native flowers give lots of colour too.

I adore my garden. It's a bit anarchic and a bit park-like as my house is small and right up in one corner, so there's not a front and back. I have three bird baths, and the birds love the place as there are big trees as well.
I also like to have little statues etc dotted around to be discovered. :)

We have the same problem here, so year after year I have been adding perlite, peat moss, compost, and a manure/humus mix when I work up the soil- that and building raised beds for better drainage. So far, so good.
