I got it at Joann's (a sewing and needle arts supplies store), it's a plastic sewing mesh that they have in a couple different millimeters thickness, and sizes :)

I'm going to look into that because my filter is too strong.

Aquatic plants are tricky... the hornwort is doing very well. I've had to cut it almost 4 times already since I got it. The carpeting plants are starting to spread. But the other two plants I bought are just about dead. I don't think this tank has the right set up to grow them. Oh well...

I can't afford a Co2 system right now so I'll have to grow strictly low light plants.

The holes in his head are from poor nutrition and poor water quality.

Almost always, this Big Al's location has half-dead betta fish. The others I saw were not active and it didn't even look like they were breathing. Their fins were also burnt looking and eaten up. This little guy was the only one that lit up when I approached the shelf so I asked the lady working there for him.

I hope he recovers well.

I was in a shop yesterday that I've not been to before and they had some absolutely stunning coloured bettas. But, they also had some which looked dead or in really poor condition :(. There were some female fighters, lovely ice blue and white and I'm 99.9% sure that at least two of the group were dead. Others were very listless.

Same with some of the males. Some were just hanging there whereas others were fairly normal.

Most of the other stock in the shop seemed pretty healthy and lively, the only other thing I really didn't like was seeing big discus crammed into small sale tanks.

Still, got a decent external filter on promotion so saved £35. And the shop is really near me, for some reason I'd just not thought of going there before.

Lovely new addition, Graceful-Lily!! :)

Originally, I was planning to start up a community aquarium with different species of fish but now I don't like the idea so much because Silas might not get along well with the other inhabitants. So, I've decided that I'm going to split my 40 gallon breeder up into 4 sections and add 3 more betta fish!! I'm going to DIY the dividers with clips from amazon and needlepoint/craft mesh.

I just saw an ad in my free local advertise for 8 betta fish. The owner has 6 females and 2 males all in one tank. The pictures they posted show very poor water conditions and severe fin damage. 😞

They are asking for $50 for all 8 fish. I really want to take them out of that situation and separate them but I don't have enough space. Even if I split my aquarium up, I'd still need more tanks.

Thinking about it, so you have Silas, Alonso, six females that can stay together and the two new males.

You have your small tank that could be for Alonso, a new tank for Silas and could divide the big tank into three sections for the new ones :)

$50 for fish in poor condition seems like a lot. Does the tank come with them? The females could stay together, and you could even divide the 5g if you had to (2.5g each is fine, on the low side but still fine). The 40g as a sorority tank could be a lot of fun. But I'd try to talk the seller down unless they come with the tank and it's in decent shape.

This is what I was thinking too.

What should I ask for without scaring them off? They are all crammed into a 20g with goldfish too! Absolutely horrible. He wants extra for the tank. But I'd have to take the bus so I couldn't bring it with me anyway.

It's not even heavily planted either so I'm sure that's why everyone is so mangled looking. I'd need to keep them separate for at least a month and treat them for whatever they may have. I could use my old 35g. It Isn't sealed but it'll hold water which is good enough.
