I just wanted to add that we are very rural and surrounded by farms so having cats wander through isn’t uncommon. I usually don’t put food out for every random kitty. Most just wander through. But I do make a note if one stays or keeps returning for several days. Then I’ll feed and assess the situation.

Lollie was a unique case. She was very dirty and the tip of her tail was missing with exposed bone and scabbing. I really worked hard toat least get her close enough to get a better look at her tail. She was totally feral and it took a week to even get her close to the food. Once that happened the rest happened pretty fast. I just did everything at her speed. Tossing chicken chunks to her worked miracles and before I knew it she jumped up in my lap. She’s obviously claimed her place in our lives but I definitely don’t expect any others to do the same. I have to be extremely cautious too since I’m type 1 diabetic and wounds from cats are ultra risky for me. I almost died in May (not from cat wounds lol I didn’t know I was diabetic and went into dka and almost didn’t make it) so I’m not willing to risk it with a spicy cat. I just show them love from a distance unless they choose to show love back.

Yes, I understand putting food out. I do it as well in order to get a feral to keep coming back and trust. Then, we want to get them hungry so that they are willing to take the risk of going into the trap (or use a drop trap). The feral section will give great help.

Your neighbors allow the cat to come inside for a few days? Outside cats can carry things so it is really important to get the cat their shots and to de-worm. Hopefully they don't have other cats as giardia and things like that can spread. I don't want to discourage someone taking care of a cat but having the proper hygiene and health steps is important.

Thank you SO MUCH for saving Lollie. Chicken is the miracle trust builder. I use it ALL THE TIME. Cats respond to love. I take care of a feral colony and deal with ferals and it is amazing how they can build trust. She built trust really fast with you. You must have had really positive emotions and energy as cats take on our emotions and energy. Between that and food it can really build trust.

I am glad you are cautious. All my cats I have ever had have been ferals from the streets. Some younger, some older, some injured, some not. I think the human has a big impact on how a cat responds. If a human threatens them or just doesn't know how to interact with them then bad things can happen. But if a person is experienced and aware it is rare (though not impossible) for something bad to happen. But it is best you are cautious. Even if they show love first a wrong move or a different emotion can cause an "event" that would not be good for you. They could get overstimulated or are just still building trust etc. Just please be careful.

Giving food, water and shelter and getting them their shots and spayed and neutered is a great way to show love and give them a better life.

They don’t have cats of their own. I’ve already picked up dewormer for it but I need it to come consistently before I can give it. I personally don’t think it’s the same one. Sounds to me that one is tame. This one doesn’t seem to be. She never did come yesterday but I suspect she got a wild meal as I just found blood and squirrel hair under our truck.
I’ll be watching for her and doing what I can. Ferals are tricky since they have their own agenda lol.
The main reason I’d like to try to tame her if I can is we plan to move in the spring. If she sticks around and doesn’t attack my dogs we’d relocate her with us so she’d still be cared for. We will see!

It is good that they don;t have cats of their own. It is hard to know if it is the same one. Some ferals are tame to the caregiver but wild to others. Some are in between. Some are "normal" to most people. It just depends.

Yes, cats are very resourceful.

All we can do is our best.

That is really nice of you. Even being spayed or neutered will be a good step in helping the cat (if you can't take her along). Now if you wouldn't bring her in the house it would be best to leave her where she is (neutered or spayed) since she knows that area.
