I heard it's not a good idea to use a regular vacuum to clean up litter on the carpet. Anybody have any suggestions on a vacuum that is built for this or another way to clean up excess litter from the floor?

Yeah I don’t think any of that should be an issue unless you’re vacuuming up big puddles of cat pee regularly
Good point! Obviously, if for some reason there is a little clump of litter with pee in it (or, poop, for that matter) dragged outside the box, I pick that up as it happens - certainly before I would vacuum that area.

For litter that is tracked on the carpet I have always used a regular vacuum with no problem and it's laster for years - both cat and dog shedding as well as litter. For the bathroom floor where we keep the litter box I've found this handheld vacuum to be exceptional:

I bought that exact vacuum about 3-4 years ago. I love it. Well worth’s investment. Has made life a lot easy.

I invested in a cordless Dyson. It's pricey, but the suction is great for having pets and it's cordless so it's easy to just grab quickly and clean up litter/fur.

I bought my Animal Dyson many years ago and it's still going strong, wish they made a cordless one back then.

~ I use a shop vacuum. Best thing I ever did was to purchase this for $60. A bit awkward to use at first but getting used to it is not hard.

I have two canister mieles, best vacuums around imo. I don’t use them much though. I sweep litter a lot and use a roomba daily. Litter on the floor is my pet peeve, I hate it and wish my cat genie had larger litter pellets that can’t get all over the place.

I think that some vacuums spit a lot of the dust back out through their exhaust, so you want one with a Hepa filter. I bought a Dyson cordless a month ago and love it, but there are others that are good and less expensive like Shark Ion cordless.

That is odd, they say you need a special vacuum and then they just list a bunch of regular vacuums when you click on the link for a special cat litter vacuum
~ I believe it's the attachment - not the vacuum that matters. 👍

I have had a problem with the cat litter, and I avoid vacuuming it if I can. I have a Dyson (with a cord), and it has a filter that gets clogged with the litter dust. My son didn't know this when he first used it, and after he left, I had the vacuum shut off the lower part completely. So now I watch that filter (it's visible through the canister), and wash it out whenever it starts to get full. Litter gets everywhere, but regular dirt and dust can clog the filter too.

Bissell has a Cross-Wave Pet Pro vacuum specifically that looks like it might be the best. Crosswave Pet Pro
