Photo editing software? Do you mean that you're planning to buy Photoshop? If so, I recommend looking into GIMP, instead. It's free, written by a huge number of people (which greatly reduces the likelihood of malware, though bugs are always possible), and as far as I know it has all the functionality of Photoshop.

Thanks Margret. I will take a look at it!

For anyone who currently has a job, check your employee fringe benefits / perks for any sort of tech discount. These are more common with large employers (hospitals, academia, finance institutions, etc) than with small employers. Discounts with Dell, Apple, and Microsoft are common as well as other things like discounts on cell phone service.

I don't know if AARP or other retiree-oriented organization offers any similar discount for tech stuff and other things.

susanm9006 susanm9006 would Google's basic free office suite meet your needs? There's a spreadsheet, word document, slides, and something called form which I'm not quite sure is. I don't think Google has a photo editing thing.

I don’t know, haven’t looked at Google before. I use Excel a great deal so it would need to be compatible with my existing excel files.

Excel files are compatible with Google Sheets :agree: The cat food ingredient spreadsheet (sticky thread to that is in the Nutrition forum) was created on Excel and then uploaded to Google Sheets and edited. Google Sheet files can be downloaded as an Excel file, too. Just an option to consider :)

I spent some time this afternoon looking at the sites I normally access and all but one are set up with two factor authentication. Thanks to my IPad, I pretty much never do google searches or surf the web on the computer so the sites I do use are pretty secure . I also spent some time getting more familiar with Chrome which I have had on my computer but rarely use and switched my Norton anti virus over to it as my primary web browser. I think that’s all I am going to do for at least the next few months until I figure out what I want to do long term.

I'm still using Paint Shop Pro 7 on my home computer. It still works OK, even on Windows 10. The Help files don't work anymore, but I haven't needed them anyway. When I was working, I had to use the Adobe Creative Suite 6 programs, so I was allowed to download them at home, too. I had to give them up. But PSP 7 still works well. Ironically, PSP X works like crap on my Win10 computer.

Thanks for this link! The free upgrade worked for me on my Windows 7 computer. I think Windows 10 has improved much since I first used it.

I think many people dislike Windows 10. I downloaded it on a failing computer years ago and hated it. But the version I downloaded Sunday night is not nearly as intrusive. Perhaps they've listened to consumers and improved it. :dunno:

When you upgraded did you need to reinstall any additional software programs you had on Windows 7?

Everything was there. I was surprised because my computer doesn't seem to have changed much with the upgrade. All my themes, bookmarks, ad blockers, anti-virus, photo software, Google Earth and, well, everything was there. I have not had to install anything and only had to make one adjustment. Most things work like Windows 7. The ones that don't - file manager, start menu, email and others -have been easy to learn. And everything works, sometimes faster. The print function did send the job to something called OneNote and not to the printer. But that was an easy fix. All my angst about upgrading was baseless. :p

If you upgrade, I hope your experience is as seamless as mine was. :D

Thanks Boris Diamond Boris Diamond . I have some “inherited” software that would be expensive to replace and impossible to reinstall so that is what makes me nervous.
I understand. All the software I have is available free on the internet. That may have facilitated the ease of my installation. Perhaps something to consider.

I downloaded and installed GIMP on Windows 10. My display got weird. The computer no longer recognized my 6 month old Samsung monitor and would only allow 1366x768 or 480x360(?) resolution. After I uninstalled GIMP, my display returned to normal. I am using Darktable right now as a photo editing program. It's free, but it has an extremely steep learning curve.

Sorry to hear it! Please submit a bug report to the GIMP team; as a former programmer I can tell you that bug reports are more valuable to programmers than gold.

GIMP also has a steep learning curve, sorry to say.
