Hi lovely TCS folks,

Just wanted to ask your thoughts on something. We (me and Katy) are moving house soon! I will be getting keys to the new place 10 days early, so the plan is to move slowly since Im DIYing without movers.

Should I bring her over for short 'visits' to the new place while i bring stuff over? Do you think it would help her adjust if she could visit and just check out the new place for a few hours at a time first? Maybe it would help as she can start spreading her scent? Or would it just confuse her more?

(FYI the new place is literally a 5 minute drive away. Katy is very used to long car trips, loves her carrier and generally travels quite well. I also take her for visits to my mum's house, and she is fine with that.)

Or is it better to move all the things out of my old place first (which will take a week), then bring the cat last? Thanks for your thoughts! :)

I have transferred apartments for 3 times already but did not bring over any or all of my cats initially for a short visit to the new place. I guess it is up to you. But personally I would suggest that you transfer all or most of your stuff first before you bring over your cat.

Just make sure that during transfers your cat would be confined to a room so she would not bolt out the door, whether its in the old place or at the new house.

Happy moving! :)

I think would keep Katy in the place you'll be sleeping, and save some of her things for the final trip. You can take a blanket, some toys and any cardboard scratchers (which are small and easy to move) over early on and spread her scent a bit that way. Just make sure her favourite stuff stays with her for as long as possible.

I last moved with cats when I was a teenager. My dad and I drove the cats up early on and stayed with them, whilst my mum stayed behind to finish the packing and moving (we did use movers as it was a long trip). Obviously that can't work in this case.

It just occurred to me that you could do something similar by moving Katy on the first day and setting up a safe room for her, but also taking your bed on the first day so that you both effectively move on day one, and you then continue to move everything else across with Katy kept in her safe room. Actually, if you decide to move Katy last I'd suggest giving her a safe room in you current place so that there's no danger of her escaping as you load things up.

I hope that all makes sense :)

Thanks for the tip, I will do so!

Yep, it does make sense. Thank you for the tip on the bed, i'll remember to move the mattress the first day I take her across!
