I've posted before about 'my' squirrels. A LONG time ago, I put out two bird feeders and have attracted tons of different birds throughout the years. After the first year or so, I also attracted some squirrels on those bird feeders, so I put out some squirrel feeders as well.

All good for another couple of years, until the squirrels went for both their own feeders and the birds' feeders. So, after numerous purchases, I finally found squirrel proof contraptions for the bird feeders. It has been good since, except for ONE squirrel who can get past the proofing contraption and comes around a couple of times a week to feast on the birds' food. Well, OK - just going to let her do it...

But, in that time I have also stored squirrel/bird food in a Styrofoam cooler in my garage. That worked well for a long time, until it didn't. The squirrels chewed through the Styrofoam!! So, I moved on to a heavy duty plastic cooler that I was no longer using. And, that has worked great for years - until:

Wonder how long it will take them to chew through this?? When they do, I am going to a metal box and let them wear down their poor little teeth trying to get to the stash. (I am kidding, but do hope the metal will stop them!!!)

You are very sweet to take care of the squirrels. I am just the opposite. I put out nuts and sun flower seeds on my deck just for the squirrels. Even though I don't care too much for birds it is ok if they come and eat, too. The Bluejays and Cardinals are beautiful birds.

I love squirrels. Always have. Always will. DH had a long history with them too. He was a commercial painter and was working at a local elementary school. The squirrels there were not afraid of humans at all. He was sitting on the tailgate or his truck one morning eating a peanut butter sandwich. He felt something brush against his leg and next thing he knew, there was a squirrel sitting on his shoulder eyeing the sandwich like, "you gonna eat that?" he gave the little one a piece and it sat there and ate it. He gave it some more and after it ate it, it ran down his leg and took off. This went on for days. He made sure I packed him a PB sandwich every day he worked there so he could share it with his new friend. One day, he went to break late and when he got to the truck, he found a big hole had been chewed in the top of his Igloo cooler. The squirrel was sitting next to it clearly unhappy. "You not gonna give me sandwich? I'll get it myself." he had to laugh. He made sure to go to break on time after that. They are crafty little buggers. I just love them.

That is a cute story. You certainly have a sweet husband. I love squirrels, too. I have been feeding them for 30 years. I live alone and along with my cat, Tommy, they are a lot of company.

Thank you. Yes he was. He had a special squirrel friend that came by to see him for years. She would bang on the door to the screened in porch to let him know she was there and wanted peanuts. He kept a jar of the Planters unsalted dry roasted ones out there for her. If he left the door open, she'd come in and sit by his feet while she ate then took some out back to bury. She used to keep her nest in a tree across the street but when they became friends, she moved her nest into the tree in our yard. Her babies knew him as well. he called her Mrs S. I called her Mama S and this made him mad. He insisted she be called MRS S. I asked him where Mr. S was and wanted to know who married them. Was it Reverend Blue Jay? He didn't like that and to him, she was a Mrs because she had babies. She lived longer than most squirrels do mostly because of that busy road behind our house. She came around for years.

I fed the squirrels in our yard when I was a kid. I got a job at a grocery store when I was 14. I bought big bags of peanuts in the shell and filled up big aluminum baking pans with them. I left them out in the yard and the squirrels went wild. They were so happy. I felt bad for them because it was so cold (NY) and there was so little food. I also used to buy huge loaves of white bread and make peanut butter sandwiches. I cut them in quarters and put them in the crooks of the trees (there was a big wooded area behind the house). They loved those little sandwiches. Just crunchy peanut butter and bread. I loved to sit and watch them hang out in the trees and munch away. No one in the house was allowed to touch their peanuts or the peanut butter/bread I bought for them and they caught heck if they tried.

I feed the squirrels too with their own feeder, after years, they finally let my bird feeders alone. I use a shepherds hook to hang the bird feeders, squirrels seem to have a hard time getting to the feeders that way. I throw whole, unsalted peanuts on the ground for the bluejays (who absolutely love them) and they fight the squirrels for them. The bluejays win most of the time, they are ferocious! The other birds scatter when they come around!

Lol! not my guys/gals!! Two of my squirrel feeders are on shepherd's hooks - they do quite well getting to the food. But, they do prefer the ones that are hanging from branches in the tree!!

I also add peanuts in the shells to the squirrel feeders when I clean/re-stock them out daily. The squirrels are apparently on the look out for me because I can't even get the feeders cleaned and re-stocked before they come running in to check out their 'fresh' food. I have resorted to placing a peanut or two in each feeder as I go through and clean them before refilling them all with food - most of the time, by the time I get back to the first cleaned feeder, the peanuts are already gone!!

They generally beat the bluejays to the peanuts, but not always!

Have you ever seen that commercial where the guy feeds the squirrels and ends up running and screaming out of the park with about 50 squirrels hanging from him? Sometimes I think of that when I see so many waiting for me to fill their feeder! LOL

:lol:Trust me, sometimes they come a little bit too close to me when I am refilling their feeders! It's like: "WHOA! Can you give me some space?!?!" I love them all, but....
