We've been making our own slippery elm bark syrup per the recipe on Tanya's site for quite some time, but would like to try substituting marshmallow root powder to see if Buddy does any better with it.

Unfortunately, I'm having a bit of trouble finding some loose powder that's not sourced from China. Can anyone recommend a good brand to try? *asks hopefully* :)

The only product I’m familiar with is Nature’s Way Marshmallow Root in capsules. Unfortunately, I can’t discover where it’s sourced. It says only
“Quality Global Sourcing” and “Bottled and Tested in The USA,” but maybe it’s a place to start.

Thanks! I might have to give capsules a try. I guess I just assumed that marshmallow root syrup wouldn't thicken properly if I used the capsules instead of loose powder, like what happens re: slippery elm. But given the choice of marshmallow root syrup that won't thicken (but made from ingredients not sourced from China), and syrup that will thicken (but be scared I might accidentally poison my cat with tainted ingredients), I might have to make do with the capsules. :)

FWIW, here’s an alcohol-free liquid form that shows it being sourced in Albania. :dunno:
Huh. That's a new one to me. But I do like that it's alcohol free.

I read somewhere that some manufacturers use marshmallow root that's sourced from Thailand, with which I'd feel way more comfortable than that from China. I just hadn't been able to find it yet. :)

This one is from Bulgaria
This one, "cut" version lists Country of Origin as Croatia, but powder did not say anything ...
That's interesting. We've been using the slippery elm powder from Starwest Botanicals for ages, so we have a certain comfort level with that particular brand. So yesterday when I looked it up, I could have sworn that it said the marshmallow root was sourced from China. Maybe I saw it at Amazon or somewhere else that just got the info wrong? *scratches head*

Okily-dokily. That makes me feel much better. But I guess it wouldn't hurt to e-mail Starwest Botanicals just to double check. Thanks oodles! :)

Multiple options are always a good thing. You never know when you suddenly might need a Plan B...or a Plan C, etc. :)
