The vet claims that the spot on my cats lip was ringworm. Only test they did was a woodslamp (black light test). And he did light up like a Christmas tree. For the past 5 weeks I’ve been treating him like he has ringworm. Doing the whole shabang. But all the web articles and posts I’ve seen from other people, claim that every person in the household has gotten ringworm from the supposed animal that started it. I don’t have it, my fiancé doesn’t have it, and neither do my other 6 cats have it.

so my question is, is there anything else that could have caused my cat to glow under a black light? Did he have a different fungus that was maybe not contagious? I’ve tried googling it, but I can’t come up with anything else.

Did you call back the clinic and ask? I know wood's lamp is used to diagnose more things than ringworm but can't make a comment on the color. If you haven't already I would call the clinic

I don't know for sure what other infections would show up with a wood's lamp, but I do know that it is pretty unreliable in terms of diagnosing ringworm - as even dead skin cells have been known to light up under the lamp. The only tests that I believe are truly reliable are taking a culture or the more current ringworm PCR test, which takes a lot less time to get results than with cultures.

At any rate, as MissClouseau MissClouseau suggested, you might want to just call the vet - and confirm that the treatment/meds you are using would work as effectively on other fungal infections as it would ringworm. Also, consider asking the vet, since your cat has been treated for 5 weeks, at what point in time should he be re-checked and with what method.

I’ve taken him to the vet several times and they just keep insisting it’s ringworm. They haven’t done any other tests besides checking him over with a woodslamp. He hasn’t glowed since week 3.

But if it was ringworm, wouldn’t everyone else have gotten it? That’s my question. It’s highly contagious.

It does seem odd that not even one of the other cats contracted it during the incubation period, most of which likely would have occurred before the ringworm was visible - making it nearly impossible to have avoided some level of spreading. There are some cats that do contract it but never present with symptoms - but, the odds of all of your other cats having ringworm without symptoms also seems highly unlikely. I am sure you asked your vet the same question - so, how did he respond?

I don't think you are going to get an answer unless ultimately it is proven he never had ringworm to begin with. As long as he clears up and none of the other cats contract it, you might just need to be happy to have gotten rid of it - whatever it was.

my vet said to just keep treating it like ringworm. And to bring him back in 3 weeks. By then it’ll be 2 months. I spoke with the vet tech and she was curious about it too. But no one can seem to give me an answer other than it’s probably ringworm or “wow, I don’t know” because they’re shocked as well that no one else has gotten it. Vet keeps saying “you must have good immune systems”

I feel bad for you and your precious kitty
Yea, I have 7 cats total, and for awhile my fiancé and I both were like “stay away from us, you infected ones”
it was killing us. We made the decision to put our house back together and let the cats roam free because he’s doing much better and doesn’t seem to have any more lesions.

My smaller kitten has it so bad it’s all over him and honestly we only kept him apart from the others a week. With limit contact. My other kittens didn’t get it at all. But after 3 weeks his hair has grown back. And we haven’t seen a vet just called them and talked to nurses and a lady her works with rescues. She told me peroxide, athletes foot cream with ringworm and the shampoo all at Walmart under $20.
It depends on the animals and humans immune system
