I've been paying around $38.00 (before tax) for a case of Braun ringers. A friend just told me that she went to order a case from the same local pharmacy and they told her it would cost $88.00 for a case of 12, $90 at Costco.

Has anyone else run into this astonishing price increase, or could it be just in my local area?

Hi Gremlin's Guesthouse Gremlin's Guesthouse ,
The price of RL had been discussed before, and it seems it has different prices in different parts of the world.

For instance, where I live, Italy, RL for home use comes in 500 ml bottles that cost €2.50/3.00 each.
A case of 12, in the case yours are 500 ml too, would be € 30.00 / 36.00, so not much different from the price you mentioned.

Thanks so much for the lead. I sent it on to my friend, as well as bookmarking it for myself -- just in case. Most all my babies have passed on now, and have only 4 left.

Here in America they come in plastic bags, both 500ml and 1000ml. Everyone I know buys the 1000ml. I prefer using only Braun fluids because their bags are not made with latex, PVC or DEHP (a carcinogen). I warm the bags before administering fluids, so these chemicals could potentially leach into the fluids.

Hi Gremlin's Guesthouse !

The "Tanya" site has extensive listings of suppliers
.
Thanks for the reminder. I'll suggest that to my friend, and I'll look as well. We live in a little one-horse town in CA, only a few hours from the Oregon border. Because we are so isolated, we are at the mercy of local merchants who all fix pricing for most everything we buy. I'm afraid this might be the case for fluids. As you know, fluids are heavy, so if you can't meet the quota for free shipping, online ordering is not really feasible.

I might be wrong, but I think that warming the bags several times (once each injection) might expose the fluid to an unnecessary temperature changes, with potential alteration of its chemistry.

I used to warm up only the amount of fluid I was going to administer.

You could be right, and I've wondered about that myself. I haven't had a kidney cat in several years, so the only thing I remember about the ringers is no freezing temps. And I don't recall reading any kind of warning about warming on Tanya's site. Could be there and I just didn't see it. If you're giving 100-150mls from a 1000ml bag, how do you warm only part?

I didn't use the bags/bottles directly. I would draw the 120 ml necessary for the injection in two 60-ml syringes, I would put a covered needle on their nozzles and put the syringes in warm water for about 5 minutes. Then, with a butterfly needle, I would inject the fluid. It would take less than 3 minutes to perform the injection, a shorter time than with the bag/bottle and a line in the cat's skin, so I shouldn't retain the cat for too a long time.

Excellent idea! This method certainly does eliminate the heat degradation issue. I'm going to try that with my next CRF cat.
