Lari Lari Thank you. He was an exceptional dog. Loved by all living creatures he met. One of those gentle giants. He weighed more than I did! When he sat in my lap I disappeared!
My Bonjure still Imagines himself as a tiny kitten, Blue imagined himself as a little puppy! Human Squish! :flail:

Big Baby Blue You did your mama proud 💟
And then some.
It’s kind of funny that I never intended to get a dog when I rescued his mom. She was pregnant at the time but I didn’t know it. They ended up rescuing me and , in doing that, rescued my child too. Love and compassion tend to spread.

The dog? I don’t mind sharing about him.
That was quite the doggie hero story! Glad you beat the diagnosis. My surgeon would have loved you as a patient. He ordered me to take a walk every 2 hours at the hospital. I was like are you crazy? I just had surgery and almost died, I'm not getting out of bed.

Dolly, Mackie, Smokey, Purry
How old are they now? 🐱

Love and compassion tend to spread.
I love your quotes. 💕

Jcatbird Jcatbird An angel in canine form, Blue! He saved many lives by his actions. And you also, by yours. When we know we must do something because we are our loved ones' hope and help, it is amazing how our determination can pull us through many "can'ts" and "won'ts" and "nevers" isn't it? And your philosophy is also so spot on.

Blue was "one of those dogs," the ones that touch so many lives just by being themselves.

And yes, NOW I can see ALL of the pictures!
He was. Lol

Yay! I’m so glad you can view everything now. Bj doesn’t want Hekitty to miss anything.

N NY cat man Maybe green makes them all think of frogs! Wanda Heart looks like a domesticated kitty now. All her wounds have healed and she actually snuggles with Liberty! I am very impressed at her ability to win over Liberty as well as the others. Liberty has always preferred to have a little space. Wanda Heart has worked wonders with the girls. She really needed and wanted a family. She Wandaed into the right place.:) How are things with Miss Eleanor and the rest of you there? Getting cold?

@surya Bravo for hanging on. I know that having any helper fail on you is a serious problem. I also know what it’s like to have extra fur babies on hand. Time for pictures? It never hurts to show everyone those precious faces.

tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 It does appear that red and green are the colors of choice. We did have some springs return. I have no idea where the kitties had them stashed.:headscratch: I looked everywhere and even used a flashlight. I think we need toy tracking devices!:flail:

M maggiedemi Callie is a true beauty and such a gentle soul. She has always been a great help when a new kitty joined us. I’ll never forget finding her standing, horrified by the first time she had seen snow. She was very willing to be one of my earliest rescues. From that moment on, she helped with the other girls.

The dog? I don’t mind sharing about him. Be careful what you ask for though. It’s not a short tail. Of course the tails around here are never short. Hang in there until the smiles. Tails end with smiles.

Blue was a huge boy. The vet said some Mastiff genes. I once took him to the vet and while sitting in the waiting room a little boy kept staring. The child finally worked up the nerve to ask,” Lady, what is that?” When I explained it was a dog he replied, “ Oh! I thought he was a baby cow!” :flail:Yep! I always walk baby cows on a leash and teach them to sit. This was made even funnier to me because Blue ( at over 100 pounds) had a favorite toy. It was a tiny stuffed Happy Meal toy that he carrierd around like a baby and was always washing with his giant pink tongue. It was a little black and white cow. Lol

His name was Blue because he had blue eyes until he was a year old. I never intended to keep him but out of the litter of eight, he kept getting passed over at the adoption days at PetSmart. He never wanted to go to those things. Secretly, I was kind of happy he stayed with me. From the earliest days I worked to train the puppies. Mom, Annie, was so intelligent she picked up every instruction as though she understood every word. Blue was like that too. He understood, sit, lay down, move over, catch, move a little more, back, stay, here, hurry, check Sarah, out, in, up, down, back up, help me up, roll over, guard, check that, get it, and so many more. Play dead was something that always made me laugh. He was always a happy boy and when he played dead he would lay down and freeze with his front paws bent...... except for the very tip of his tail. It wagged like crazy. Just the tip! He and Annie were great about helping me with Sarah. They would go into her room regularly to check on her. I never needed to ask them, they just protected her. If I was holding Sarah in my lap and dropped anything, they would pick it up and place it beside me. Help me up was really just kind of a joke. I would be getting up out of the recliner while carrying Sarah and say,” Blue, help me up!” He would place his massive head under my arm and push me up. I had no idea that this fit of play with him would be truly helpful.
In 2002 I was preparing for work the next day and loading my van with all the supplies and crated of orchids that I would need to spend our usual Saturday in the city. This was the day of the week I devoted to taking Sarah to hang out with the College kids to socialize and I introduced the locals and tourists to unusual plants while Sarah had some fun. Sarah adored doing this so I looked forward to it each week. We had become a fixture there after showing up every weekend for some years. I loaded the van, bathed Sarah, dressed her, fed her, took care of all the animals ( besides the two dogs that included my two rescued kitties, previous ferals as kittens), watered everything in the greenhouse and did some chores here. We got through lunch too. After lunch I went outside and squatted down to smell a flower. I heard a pop and felt a tug in my back. It seemed like fireworks flashed behind my eyes. I got up and throughout the rest of the day I called friends to see if anyone could come over. I wasn’t sure what had happened but I was concerned. Pain started so I got a hot bath. My back felt sore so I got out and stretched out on the floor beside the place I had laid Sarah. Big mistake. I went into shock and could not get up. I could barely move and the phone was not near. No one called me back and no one showed up. My family was on vacation in another state. It got dark in the house and I tried to just keep Sarah calm and content by singing to her and rubbing her but I knew we were in trouble. If I couldn’t get up, we could both lay there for days undiscovered. I knew we would be missed in the city but would anyone do anything? Blue laid down beside me and kept me warm. Annie laid beside Sarah. Finally it was near 11 at night and the pain was unbearable. I told Blue to help me up. He placed his head down and I put my arm around his neck but could not get up. He kept trying to pull me up. Then I just held on and told him ,”over.” He pulled me across the floor some. I kept instructing him with words he understood to “move over, a little more, back, more.” He did everything I asked and when we stopped I was laying near the phone. I pointed to it and told him to “get it.” He did. I hit a button that automatically dialed a friend and customer who happened to be a doctor. Thankfully, he answered. He called an ambulance and another friend who lived near me. The friend came to help Sarah and the ambulance arrived. The EMTs were afraid of Blue but I told him to ,” back off,” and he laid down. He would not leave though. They got me on the gurney and then started to laugh. My giant golden boy was trying to sneak onto the gurney to go with Mom. Sometime around midnight I got to the hospital and went into respiratory arrest. I had been paralyzed from the waist down sometime after the spinal disc ruptured and sent the pieces into the spinal cord. I had not realized my whole body was swelling up. My airway was closing. I woke up again the next day and was told that if Blue had not gotten me to the phone when he did, I would not have survived. I also woke up with a half dozen of the people from town around my bed. I still don’t know how they found out but all that mattered to me is that they were there. They told me that there had been a group of people outside of the building where we normally would have been on that morning and they were gathered in prayer for us. I was told the paralysis was permanent. This all started on a Friday. After my condition was stabilized I had emergency surgery to remove the disc pieces. Damage had already been done. Little saw blade pieces had done some cutting as I had moved around. I had one incision in my back. When I awoke from surgery I got the news about being paralyzed. The nurse would not let me try to get up. As soon as she left the room, I tried to get up and rolled out of the bed. We never know what will happen unless we try. I have always believed in love and hope. I was bent double but managed to make it to the nurse station. On Monday, I returned to Sarah, Blue and the rest of my animal family. It was months of recovery but Sarah, Blue, Annie and the kitties helped me every day. I made a full recovery although no one can explain how it was possible. I think it was the love.
That’s the story of a hero named Blue, his mom and furmily. We lost Blue a few years later. The kitties after that and His Mom shortly after. Our home felt empty but I just didn’t think I could or should get any more animals.
A few months after that, the first ferals showed up. :):lovecat4:Dolly, Mackie, Smokey, Purry and others. Sarah adored them and they adored her. She drew them to her like a magnet. Lol :catlove:Mackie started taking the place beside Sarah where Blue had previously stayed and Smokey stayed curled up beside her. The kitties offered us great comfort. A few years later Sarah went to find Blue, Annie, Kenty and B. kitty. I like to think they guard each other now. When one door closes, another opens. It’s all about continuing the love and hope.

Believe it or not, smiles follow! They always do.

All that talk about dogs gave me a Fluff tail!

Have a great night everyone! We send purrs and smiles. :):heartshape:
Yes, it's getting colder, but nothing that another layer of clothing can't handle. We are supposed to be getting snow today and into the weekend- nothing major, though. As for Miss Eleanor, she is on my lap right now, purring away, and the rest of the crew are doing well, also. Often, when Michele is on the love seat, you will find Burdock, Digger, and Miss Eleanor curled up beside her- there isn't room for the rest of them, though.
We once had a dog, and he, too, was a rescue. Ace was smart as a whip, loyal, and protective, but while Michele and I were out one evening, he was stolen, and we never saw him again. That was over 40 years ago, and we never got another dog.

Oh no! Stolen? I am so sorry. I can understand why you did not get another. 🥺

Thank goodness you have Miss Eleanor and the other furbabies now. I know they show great appreciation for being rescued as well as great love. They must be really enjoying snuggling as it gets colder there. I knew it was possible there would be snow for you soon. Brrrr! Lots of layers for sure! When I lived where it got very cold, the first year there we had only fireplaces for heat. We went to bed with heated bricks. Mornings were the hardest because we knew that once we crawled out from under the covers it was shiver time until the fire was stoked again. Layers saved us! My cat slept under the covers and stayed there until the fire was going good. By the next winter we had installed a woodburing stove and some electric heat. Lol Our ancestors were tough!

tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 He was an angel. I’ve never known a dog like him before. Everything for a reason. I wasn’t looking for him and his Mom but when I saw Annie, it was clear that I had to stop. I am so grateful that I did and that she trusted me enough to come to me. Pretty amazing considering the circumstances.
Thanks for that about my philosophy. I have been around long enough to know that if we just keep going forward during rough spots, everything changes and we never know what wonderful thing may be just around the next turn. If we are lucky, It’s a sweet kitty smile! I am very lucky to have sweet smiles around me now. Kitty smiles always make me laugh.

You are just such a beautiful person, Jcatbird! I just chuckled because my iPad knows your name! Thank you for sharing that with us! Annie and Blue sounded like they loved their role in the family as well. Have you ever considered writing a book? I was going to bring up about you writing a how to book on taming strays and ferals, but, a life story would make a lovely gift of a read as well!

I grew up with dogs, birds, even guinea pigs for a moment ( allergic). Then in my late late teen my parents got a bunny, then two more and then it turned into a small rescue. My name is actually a bunny name Jewely, lol. We never had cats because I was extremely allergic. I finally got desensitization shots in my mid 30’s and it helped! I never had the pleasure of a cat in my home until I was 42!! Imagine that! I didn’t know anything about the little stray my daughters brought home, but he was the best gift I’ve ever received! I’m referred to being called his grandmother, and they’re the mothers, lol. I just wish I’d known about this wonderful site back then! I did have help, but not enough like you get here.

rubysmama rubysmama He was quite a fellow! :) He was another kind of smiling fur baby. Just a verrrry large baby.

M maggiedemi I know your experience with surgery was new and frightening. You’re surgeon did right by encouraging you to walk but he had no idea what it was like to be in your shoes. If he had he might have reassured you a bit more. I know that was rough for you. I had been a caregiver to more than one person over the years as well as having dealt with some previous surgery myself so it was very different for me. Plus, as mentioned, having Sarah waiting for my return made me feel that I had to overcome any obstacle. I had a great surgeon and I guess I was just meant to recover. I am still mindful of my good fortune. Sometimes when I am walking the yard and admiring a beautiful sky I do think that I am very lucky to still be able to do that. An experience like that makes us more appreciative of the simple pleasures in life that we , otherwise, might take for granted. Since Sarah could not walk, I may have an even greater appreciation for the ability to move around by myself. I can tell you that it was scary for me too though.

How old are the kitties? I may have to pull the files to give exact ages of all. Let’s see..... the first feral colony here started appearing around 2005. Dolly is the eldest of the cats that survived out of that colony. Most had Felv and many passed as kittens or within a few years. I have vet records on almost all of the kitties that passed since I was working to Spay/neuter and immunize to stop the spread of the disease and population growth. It was a very difficult time. Dolly would be 13, Mackie showed up shortly after. Then Smokey, Purry about two years after Smokey. In other words, 13, 12, 12, 9 and then the others all came to me over the next few years. In 2012 no more kitties were outside until this second colony appeared. Marcus was the last feral out there. I don’t know the true ages of most of the kitties since many were not found as kittens. After your question about Blue I pulled out an old camera to see if any old photos were on the card. The photos were all taken after Blue passed but I found some photos that I though were worth sharing. Want to see a baby Muffin?

You are so sweet! Thank you. If anything I add to the site gives any pleasure, it makes me extremely happy.
I am so glad you enjoy reading about all the fur babies! I actually have , very much, wanted to write a book or three., It’s kind of funny but I’ve been asked that very question for years now. I have done some writing in the past but nothing as ambitious as a book. Everything I have written that was published is something that was requested of me so I never had to “find” a publisher. Perhaps I’ll cross paths with one someday. I wrote a story for my daughter and did some illustrations but it was just something I did as a mom. Lol I would love to help others with kitties or any other thing possible. Sarah inspired me to do some interesting things and maybe some of those tales might help someone else over a hump. Lol A couple of our stories have been written about locally. Does that count??
I can tell you lots of stories about great animals. I once rescued a Welsh pony who liked to tour the small town where I lived. The local Sheriff was always walking her back home after the shopkeepers spoiled her with treats. I tried to explain that they were encouraging her but she was greatly loved there. The funniest thing was that she spent time INSIDE the shops! I finally moved her out to a farm to retire from small town life.
You had bunnies? I love bunnies. I had a cat named Rabbit that grew up to think he was a bunny. He was always bringing real bunnies home with him. :bunnydance:They would then spend time with the rescued chicken named Fried. A life with any living creature is an adventure. I’m very glad you got to experience having a kitty in your life. Cats are just amazing and totally loving. I’ve always been most drawn to kitties. I guess at this point the cats probably call me Mom, Grand ma and great grand ma! As you now know, nothing could be better than being honored with a title like that. Your daughters are a treasure and they brought you treasure. The world can provide beautiful gems that add sparkle to our lives.:cloud9:
If you ever need an animal tail, just meow. Tell your iPad I said hello! It’s a pleasure to know it.

I know what you mean. Growing up, we lived in an old frame farmhouse with no insulation or central heat- just a cast-iron wood stove in the kitchen and one of those kerosene stoves- the ones with a tank on the back- in the living room, and that was it. Thank goodness we didn't have to worry about pipes freezing, because there was no plumbing in the house, either.

Even back then it was always difficult to catch them all in a photo. Lol

Have a great night everyone! I hope the baby pictures made you smile. :heartshape:

You are still and will always be cute, Muffin. That goes for your entire furmily, from babies on up. Around here, mature cats are valued and loved every bit as much as kittens -- even more so, actually, because a life shared becomes more beloved every day. And we always look forward to a new installment of Life at Chez Catbird!

if we just keep going forward during rough spots, everything changes and we never know what wonderful thing may be just around the next turn.
I hope this is true. 👍

Want to see a baby Muffin?
Awww, the baby Muffin pic made my day. 😻 Is Muffin the daughter of my dearest little Lady? That would explain the pretty colors.

Lambie at about a year old. Loving a box of silk flowers.
Is Lambie still alive?

The world can provide beautiful gems that add sparkle to our lives
The more sparkle, the better. 🐈🐇🦙🐎🐔 I was shocked to see there is a llama emoji! Llamas are very sparkle-y I think.

rubysmama rubysmama The baby pictures made me smile. Bonjure certainly look better now. I never would have imagined him becoming the giant fluff boy he is now. I’m so glad he’s here with us.
I remember noticing the paw print in the step when I first looked at this house. I just kind of smiled. Little did I know!!!!!:bluepaw: It was a sign to all cats that pass this way. Maybe it says something like “The Cyatt Regency” hotel.

Double post? I didn’t see it but around here it’s always Banjo. ;)

N NY cat man I grew up in a house built by two brothers. The house next door was where they started out and inside the middle of the house was their original log cabin. Lol It was perfectly preserved since the latter portions were built around and over it. No insulation in either one. We did have plumbing from about the 1950’s but it froze every year and when it finally thawed it meant someone had to crawl into the flood and fix it. Double brrr! I had a small fish tank of local mosquito fish that actually froze. ( rescued fish bait!) I was devestated but it turned out fine. I put the tank in front of the stove and when it thawed, so did the fish!!I returned from school to find them swimming around as though nothing had happened. I kept them nearer to the stove forever after! I can remember sleeping under so many blankets, I could barely move. We learned to get dressed either under the covers or in front of the oven. Not ideal but when you can see your breath in the house, any little bit is wonderful. When I got older I did start wrapping pipes. Crawling under that house was always a little creepy though.

tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 Muffin was a cutie. Of course Lady was grown when I rescued the bunch but all were immediately cherished. That was a very wild bunch of kittens! Lol They still keep me hopping. Muffin is snuggled against me now and Lady is at the end of the sofa. The girls still stay close and the boys still stick together. They are an interesting group. Very glad you still enjoy the adventures of the furmily. :)

M maggiedemi Lady is Mom to Muffin. As far as I know Lambie is still okay. It broke my heart to let her go but with all the kitties here, I had to give her the best life possible and when I found she could finally get a home, I let her get adopted out. It was after I started writing here. With so many others outside at risk, it did provide space for one more life to be saved. A very hard thing to do but we do what is best for the kitties. That’s the tough part of rescuing, letting go. Also a good part though because they can love and be loved by others. I do miss her Mbaaaaa sounding meow and sweet self.

I like sparkly too! I can tell you a llama short story. I was visiting a place that had some young llamas and I was feeding them treats when suddenly my head was jerked back. Whoa! I have long hair and when I turned I discovered one of the young ones decided to munch on my hair. I laughed and so did everyone else there. The only bad part was having to get him to let go. Treats worked but Ewwwwwee! Llama spit in my hair! Llamas have a juicy mouth!🦙

We were both happy to see Froggie. I kept the light on to help him and the other Froggies to stay warm and catch some bugs. Banjo has been having happy zoomies all day today. It did my heart good to see the love continued. Banjo always has the sweetest expressions on her face when Froggie is here. I think Froggie does too!
Happy tails and toes. 🐸:bicolorcat:
The magic always just around the next corner. :kitty:

Have a great night everyone. Sending purrs, chirps and peeps tonight. :heartshape:
