I think the day after halloween is the new "black friday", lol. There were candy canes at the checkout line at the grocery store yesterday. The sick thing is that almost grabbed a couple of them out of sheer habit and I don't even have anyone to give them to .

I went to Target to get some stuff yesterday and the whole store was christmas already. I did get some peppermint marshmallow and peppermint pretzels at Sprouts the other day only because I love both and they are only out this time of year. But I wont open either for a few weeks (uhhh maybe days).

I don’t usually shop Black Friday, too many people, but I do look online to see who is offering free shipping. I just made my first Christmas gift purchase last night from The Body Shop.

I have credit card debt, so I'm mostly going to pass this year. Laurel got a "puppy's first Christmas" stocking from Petco with some sort of a treat in it last year, so I'll probably get Willow something similar or else make her one.

It seems too early to look into volunteering at a soup kitchen or children's hospital.

You could probably make it much cheaper. My Willow loves sparkle balls, you pay a dollar a piece at Petco. But you can buy a huge bag full at Hobby Lobby for just a couple dollars.

All my friends and siblings are older like I am and we all have way too much stuff. So family is just a card. I have 2 friends I exchange small gifts with - Under $10. I usually make something.

The cats may get new toys, but I will probably make them. If you are crafty you can take scraps of cloth (or buy a remnant or small garment at a thrift store). Cut into a square, sew or glue 3 sides, stuff (buy a pillow from a thrift store for $2 or $3 and wash the stuffing). Then sew or glue the top.

I also buy ping pong balls from the $ store - 6 or 8 for $1.

Back to the original post - I refuse to get sucked into the whole Black Friday thing. If there is something I need/want and it is a good deal I might buy it, but mostly I just ignore all the hype.

The holidays can be depressing - my brother said he doesn't like all the commercials because the people all have a much better life than him.

You can add catnip to the stuffing too :wave3:
The commercials are stupid to me. Buy this new expensive thing for your family members, and your Christmas will be just like theirs. Marketing can be very cruel to the senses. They fail to mention the debt and the fact by the time you pay off what you purchase, half of the items will be lost or broken anyway :rolleyes2:

I asked our son and DIL for lists for the grands and we'll start as soon as we get the lists to work with. Rick and I are not getting anything for each other this year. He's doing something shed-wise for me and I got him the glider chair and ottoman that he wanted for the shed. We decided that we didn't need anything. And each cat and The Beast will have their stockings stuffed with treats and toys.

We buy for my sister and BIL, but that's usually a card to a restaurant. And we also put together a "chocolate" basket for Rick's mom with anything and everything chocolate. So, other than the grands, we're good.

That doesn't mean we won't be out on BF! Cat people always make PetSmart their first stop on BF morning!

The cool thing about Petsmart is that you can order it online and pick it up whenever you want :D. I got over 50 buckets of Tidy Cats last year and still have some left, so this year I won't be quite so crazy, lol. Maybe 20.

I did that last year. They never pulled my order then cancelled it when they ran out. :eviltongue: :nono:

We first got Halloween stuff in stores here in August. It was before school even started and they start early here. The Christmas stuff started hitting the shelves about a week later. :rolleyes2:

I've done a little shopping for DD. My mother has been busy shopping for all the grandkids. I wouldn't mind being mostly done by Thanksgiving. But then I always end up getting just a few more things. :rolleyes2:

One of the items on DD's list is in the BF ad. She had circled it in the Target Toybook and when I looked it up I noticed it was already cheaper than it's listed for in the Toybook; so I got it right then. I always make a spreadsheet with the kid's lists and compare prices. Many years I've noticed things were cheaper in October and early November. They make it look like things are on sale still; but not really.

That happens a lot. I pay attention to black friday just for really good deals but I tend to price check a few places and usually find the same or better price somewhere else before or after black Friday. I did buy a TV for black friday one year and 28 days later it was cheaper (luckily since I bought it online I was able to get a price adjustment and was refunded the difference by the online support.)

Jerks. Mine went great. I ordered some online, then went after work on Friday and bought some separate from the order, after verifying that the order was pulled and didn't have to be picked up that day. Then I went back and picked up the order on Saturday. They had plenty of litter. The Banfield at that location closed a few years ago so they had the whole vet clinic section filled with litter buckets, lol.

I don't bother with Black Friday sales except for necessary pet stuff. This year I know I'll get Carefresh bedding for the mouse. It's usually BOGO for the 60 L bag at most chain pet stores. Memo to me: bring the folding shopping cart so I can get the bulky bags home by bus. I can stock up on some canned food, too.

My mouse is ancient (about a year and a half. Typical life span is 2 years) that I really don't need two 60 L bags of bedding. I can donate whatever I don't use to the shelter. I just bought mouse food from Amazon.

What are this year's "must have" holiday gifts?

Black Friday was never a thing here in the UK until about 10 years ago or so, so we don't really bother with it much unless there's something on sale we absolutely need or want. It's always a mad scram for even pointless little things that are on sale, so I try to avoid it lol.

I only shopped on Black Friday last year because I was already in Walmart that afternoon waiting for a prescription after having oral surgery. I'm sure I looked grand. ;) I went one year by myself and it was a huge mistake. I barely managed to get the things I went for in the first place. It's not my cup of tea. Maybe if I had the right friend and less expectations it wouldn't have been so bad.
