Am I the only one who feels shocked at how fast November is approaching!? I turned the heat on and put an extra blanket on the beds recently. We went kayaking this weekend for probably the last time this year. DH says he will hang the kayaks this weekend so I can park in the garage again. It really is easier to keep them on the trailer in the garage; but I'm ready to park inside again. At least until we pull all the Christmas totes from the attic in a month and THOSE take up my half of the garage again. :paperbag::lol:

What are your "rules" for running your heat or air conditioner?

DH doesn't have climate control at work; so he likes the house to be comfortable. We usually turn the heat on when it's cold enough that we wake up to the house around 68 or so. Definitely by then. I turned the heat on last week because it was 69 in here; but i keep it at 70/71 at the most anyway. We need time to adjust so I'll probably turn it down a tad soon. :agree: DD has been enjoying her new fleece bathrobe. It's got a hood (with cat ears!). :catman:

We turn the AC on when it's around 76 in the house usually. Sometimes a little hotter. We generally keep it around there now too. Before we had kids we always kept the heat at 68 in the winter and the AC at 78. We keep the ceiling fans on most of the time anyway. But it is nice to be so comfortable in the house. I also turn it down a little while I work out. One of the vents blows right on my elliptical.

Now I'm debating when to pull the fleece sheets out. I like my smooth summer sheets. I'm not ready yet.

I keep the house pretty cool in the winter, that's what slippers and fuzzy clothes and blankets are for. :) I guess it sits around 68-69 or so. Although my husband does tend to crank the gas fireplace in the basement, he likes it to be toasty down there. When we go thru our deep freezes, when the temp outside is -22 or colder, and even more so when the wind chill kicks in, we do have to up the heaters because it's just too cold.
We don't have central air conditioning, but we do have a window unit that we hook up in our bedroom so we are comfortable at night in the summer. But we set it at a warmer temp at around 73, it's enough to cut the humidity out and cool things enough without running up our hydro bills.
The next time I change our sheets, I think I'll be putting the flannel on, our nights are steadily pretty cool now. I think in the next few weeks I'll be putting the fleece blanket on as well, and soon enough it will be time for the electric blanket. :frown: We keep our bedroom temp low but we're still nice and warm in bed.

Our falls are so unpredictable that you might need the air conditioner running one day and heat the next, so I turn on either when I feel too cold or hot. This year for example we had an 83 degree day followed the next day by a 53. My heat thermostat varies, 67 for daytime and 63 for night. Summer air is set around 78.

As far as sheets, in winter I use a flannel top sheet over a regular sheet. That provides the warmth of the flannel while maintaining the feel of the regular sheet. I never use flannel bottom sheets or pillow cases.

That could describe our falls too. One big difference I noticed when we bought this house is how much better insulated it is than our old place. I can often avoid turning the heat/ac back on if I keep the windows closed. But it's been AMAZING to have the windows open most days to let fresh air in! I keep putting little chairs in front of the living room windows for the girls but they haven't been up there like they used to be.

As far as holiday decorations, I will pull down the Halloween ones the day after and weather permitting get the Christmas ones up within a day or two later. I learned many years ago I could either put up Christmas decorations on a warm and sunny November day or wait until a snowy subzero December day to do it.

Honeybee on my lap, music playing in background
I personally am hot all year round. If it wasn't for my Mom I'd be going without the heat lol
That's me. HATE the HEAT on!!!! It's forced hot air and dries the skin out! I love my air conditioning! I want my warm fuzzy Honeybee blanket to snuggle under plus if it's cold-she sleeps on top of me all night so I don't need the heat on. That little 10 lb cat gives off more heat than the furnace! And the new kitty likes to sleep slammed up against my back-it's always too warm for me! We already ran the heat in September..jon likes it warm. he sets it 71 when I am at work. YUCK. I set it at 63 at night-he already turned on the electric blanket but he just turns it on 3 to warm up the bed then turns it off 2 hours later. Me-I can't take it-there's 3 blankets on the bed- too much for me!

When we get 20 or colder-the heat is set on 70 because it's just so cold! I always worry about frozen pipes and power outages so I keep it warmer than I like during ice/snow storms etc. I run around in shorts all year long anyways.

IF I had my way=the heat wouldn't turn on unless it's 55 in the house but that's the temperature mold/mildew likes=so I compromise at 65.
oh we use flannel year round cause I sweat so much and it seems to be less sticky but Jon likes cotton sheets during the summer-it's almost time to trade them out for flannel soon-we only use fitted sheets for flannel but he may use a flannel flat sheet this year..I cleaned out the bedroom last week and found our excess winter sheets so probably do that next weekend. I sleep on the couch on top of a wool blanket/layered with microfleece blankets I wash weekly-that's tonight's project-wash my blankets and don't use sheets but I have like 3 blankets underneath me as a layer ontop of the couch cover to keep the couch in new condition.

I am ready for winter. I want to read my books-got enough for years and watch TV while a cat snuggles with me..yeah boring I know..but I just love snuggling with cats!

I don't have any "rules" about turning the heat or AC on. Whatever makes me comfortable at the time. I've tried skimping and it doesn't make a big enough difference in the electric/gas bill to be worth it. So bah. I'll set it where I want it when I want it.

When I'm not home the heat is set at 66 and the AC is set at 74 (I would set it higher but the humidity is just too much around here and I don't want mold).

We don't have AC. Didn't need it for years. This year we've had to pull out a couple of portable fans--we're not used to 90ºF temperatures around here! Winters are pretty mild, too. I have the thermostat set to 65º during the day. Today, though, the temp is supposed to be 80º! :dunno:

I am another one who lives in an unpredictable weather area. On 1 Oct this year, it was 90. Yesterday, it was low 70s. A week ago, it was 43 during the day and 34 at night. We were married in Nov 2016. The temperature was 76. We are taking out our air conditioners this coming weekend.

I like heat with low to moderate humidity. If it could be 80-90 with a humidity of less than 50, I would be happy. . My husband, on the other hand, is hot most of the time. In fact, my normal body temperature is 97.8, and his is 98.9.

The bedroom is typically colder than the rest of the house so that he can sleep without being uncomfortable. I have to wear my housecoat to bed. During the winter, the heat is set to 68 during the day and 64 at night. If it were up to me, I would keep the house at 75 in the winter. He would keep it at 55. 68 is as low as I can comfortably tolerate it not to be covered in blankets.

It is an old house with no heat ducts in the bathroom or upstairs bedrooms. They have space heaters. I also have a small space heater that I use when I am sitting in the living room. I put it about 3 feet away and turn it to 70 when the blankets and socks are not enough.

I always try to get DH to do the Christmas lights in November on the nicest Saturday in the forecast. I don't turn them on till the day after Thanksgiving; but it's nicer for him to be able to do that for me when it's still decent out. Last year it got cold on us. Which means I should pull the lights out and test them soon so I can be ready! :yess:

I can’t imagine sleeping without sheets! I often sweat at night and I can’t imagine what my blankets would smell like If I didn’t use sheets. They are easy to wash and keep clean, blankets not at all. My husband always slept without anything but I’ve persuaded him to at least wear a tee shirt at night so he sweats into a tee shirt instead of the sheets. Keeps the bed smelling sweeter.

Our weather is generally wonderful, at least to my taste, but unpredictable, especially at seasonal changes like now. We’ve just had a cold week with temps dropping enough to want the heat on in early mornings and later at night. Yet this week will be in high 80s.

i don’t notice any extra hair on the two indoor cats, but the outdoor feral cat has grown a thick glossy coat in black that is just beautiful.

Yep, I use flannel all year long for that reason too. I don't like the sticky smoothness of regular sheets. I just use the fitted sheet though. For a blanket I use a minky fleece blanket---easy to wash when a cat throws up on it :/. I have an electric minky blanket for when it gets cold. I don't like to have a lot of blankets piled up.

No rules, but I like to have a space of time (like now) when AC is off and heat is not on so the bills are a little lower.
Right now we just have a top sheet. DH wants a blanket, but Cricket doesn't like blankets (ever hear of a cat who hates fuzzy blankets?) so I'm reluctant. Plus, I like it cooler.
