Like many of us here, I do an ever-changing rotation of cat foods in an effort to keep up with my cat's tastes and whims. Most recently I've been feeding Wellness Beef & Salmon for breakfast and Primal pork nuggets for dinner. We're getting toward the end of the Primal bag, and quite frankly I'm getting a little weary of getting out the ol' mortar and pestle to smash up the nuggets every night...especially since Sylvie always begs for more.

So tonight I turned to the cupboard and got out one of the cans of Rawz duck that Sylvie stopped eating about a year ago. I offered it to her a few months ago and no dice. But I dished it out tonight (it's currently 62 degrees F) and she ate it all up!

Is it my imagination, or does this have something to do with the imminent change of season from summer to fall? Feel free to tell me I'm crazy. :p

I definitely think your onto something there. Last few days Zoe has not been into her tuna varieties as much. They get the whole Hearted Tuna/Tuna & Sardine or shrimp every night and eat it good, but the last few days, Zoe's been like "eghh, NAH" So tomorrow I'm going to try for breakfast, a single packet of Weruva turkey & chicken and see if she likes that, see if Lily likes it too, maybe I can change up their dinner too.

It's not you that's crazy. This, alas, is what they do to try to make us crazy. :p

And funny that you mention Rawz duck: Ireland (our lynxpoint) also decided she loved it last week after not having eaten it in who-knows-how-long.

I think they're circulating the memo and laughing at us. ;)

Good to know we have more company. BTW, Zoe and Lily are adorable!

Aww thank you! It's still pretty frustrating with this "change". I didn't even really definitely notice till tonight when Zoe took a few bites and walked away, and realized she did it the last few nights too. Back to the drawing board. Which really sucks because it took me forever to find this brand that they actually liked and would eat instead of just lick. Maybe something more seasonal she'd prefer? Maybe something with a lil pumpkin?

And here I thought I was the only one to use a mortar and pestle for Primal Pork! I find other flavors are softer and I can crumble it in my hands - the rabbit or Chicken & Salmon.

I'm sure they are. (Our cats sniff around at our wallets a lot, too, which really makes me wonder what they're up to... :D)

Ha ha, this is why I have my husband feed the Primal pork for the breakfast meal!

I have to feed it for her evening meal or she gets all antsy - Primal is her favorite and if I choose something else I hear about it. :angrycat:

I know what you mean! Primal pork is one of (somewhat picky) Ireland's favorites, too. I do sprinkle some of it on some of the foods that I feed her but I always go for a brick that's been broken and crumble from the break! (If that makes sense...)

My M.O. has been to break (with my hands) each brick into as many pieces as I can and then crumble them with the mortar and pestle. But I do scope out the bag to see if there are already broken pieces that will give me a head start!

Sylvie can't tolerate chicken, but I might give the Beef & Salmon a try -- the Primal website says the percentage of bone in it is 6%, which is the same as in the pork.

I have suspicion it could be about seasonal shedding and hairballs. During seasonal shedding they are more likely to get nauseous due to increased amount of hair, right? Well it definitely happens to Hima. I think they either associate that nausea with food too, like that food makes them get nauseous again if they got nauseous the day before when they had it (even if the nausea was because of hair), or they just get more sensitive due to hair and if they were already somewhat bored with the food that seasonal sensitivity becomes the last drop. Both times Hima had enough of a food this year it was during seasonal shedding.

Seasonal-menu update: After Sylvie finished the remaining cans of Rawz duck, we went back to Primal pork for a while. Just now I got a Chewy delivery of a case of Redbarn lamb, a richer/fattier meat that I had held off on reordering until the weather here got cold (we had a couple of below-freezing days this week). I dished some out for dinner and Sylvie ate the entire portion in one go, which is rare for her. She did get briefly distracted and walked away, but went only a couple of feet before the food lured her back to the bowl.

Seasonal dietary changes is an actual thing. Most animals are geared towards craving or desiring what is in season during that time of year. I feed my rabbit only in season fruit but the few times I've offered him hot house versions of the same he turns his nose up. It would not surprise me in the least if cats are the same by wanting a fattier meat in the winter to bulk up and a lighter meat in summer when it is warmer.
