This is my last post for a bit, as Dorian closes in, and conditions are beginning to deteriorate. I wrote this and posted it here a couple of years ago, it seems appropriate to re-post it now!

The Storm

There's a storm coming,

O my Sisters...

The wind moans and whines, running

restless, anxious fingers through the trees

And the trees shiver and sigh in response.

There's a storm coming,

O my Darlings...

Not a bird in the sky

Not a creature scampers or

Runs or crawls

All gone to earth in the Deep Wood.

There's a storm coming,

O my Brothers...

Look you to the South and West!

See them there?

Dark gray bodies writhing and roiling,

Riding high, the Storm Dragons come!

Lightning is the fire they breathe, and

Thunder is their roar!

There's a storm coming...

O!

Comes the storm...
That's a powerful poem, Mamanyt1953 Mamanyt1953 and you all stay SAFE, hear?

I love the black bean ones! I used to buy the Morning Star Farms spicy black bean burgers until the price got too high. Sometimes bread crumbs can be helpful in sticking other things together. I've used those for veggie loaf (with lentils, onions, celery, spices) and it works fairly well.
Since I'm vegetarian, not vegan, I'll make black bean burgers with egg, which also helps keep them from falling apart. Also, although I prefer baking the burgers in the oven, I've found heating them in a frying pan with a bit of oil help keeps them together.

Sounds really good! I'm sort of mostly vegan, but I like tuna, potato salad and other salads with mayonnaise, things that have eggs in them as an ingredient, and occasionally chicken, so I'm just a "slacto-veg" :flail:

I continued to eat tuna sandwiches occasionally for several months after I became vegetarian, or I guess mostly vegetarian. But then I saw a picture of someone posing with the tuna they had caught, and it broke my heart seeing such a magnificent fish dead, and being used for a photo op, and that was it for tuna for me.

They had just gotten moved. So at least he was close to the hospital and his whole family is nearby now.

Just an occurrence. He got an infection from the shunt so they had to remove it. So now they have to manually remove the fluid each time there's an issue.
Ok, I know what all that is like. I knew a young lady who wasn't close enough to a good hospital. :(

Prayers to Shane!

My main problem with ANY vegan meat substitute is that they load up whatever they use for it with yeast extract and flavors. Those are some major sources of monosodium glutamate, which has been my main migraine trigger for almost 20 years now. If they could make something without MSG, I'd be really willing to try it because I keep hearing nothing but good things about the Impossible meat brand.
It didn't have any yeasty or TVP flavors. I was raised Adventist and have been eating fake meat for 60 years. Some of it would have been better back on the shoe it came from. The Impossible patty looks and tastes like meat but milder flavor. The condiments and toppings aren't overwhelmed by the burger taste.

I like Gardenburgers but I don't like the original Boca burger. I don't really like the ones that try to taste like meat most of the time---I like the ones that are unapologetically veggie. Like spicy black bean patties or Gardenburgers. Plus, I like Whoppers for the other elements, not the meat, lol. I love a big sloppy burger with all the condiments dripping out. So as long as the "meat" gives it some structure it's probably fine.
You will have to see for yourself, but I ended up with mayo, mustard and lettuce to my wrist (eating one-handed and driving: shame on me).

I was vegetarian for most of my adult life and the two things I really wanted that weren't on my menu were tuna and chicken. There were substitutes. I bought a LOT of cans of "TUNO" and regretted it. They just didn't get it right. We were fortunate at that time to have a lot of vegetarian restaurants to choose from. No more.

There are a lot of mock tuna salad recipes out there using chick peas. Here's one Vegan Chickpea "No Tuna" Salad | Forks Over Knives

Some people add a bit of finely chopped dried seaweed or nori to add that seafood flavor.

I remember when veggie burgers used to be cheap AND no SOY fillers :mad2::mad2::mad2:

Soy makes my endo act up so I TRY to avoid it as much as possible-which means- MUCH less food choices..so lately I live on rotisory chicken, raw veggies cooked for 2 minutes or so and pasta or plain mashed tators...most processed foods has too much JUNK in them or low fat mumble jumbo which isn't good for our bodies...did ya know sugar is more harmful than fat?!

So back to veggie burgers-when I was on vacation last month, there was a yard sale I went to-they had free beans and grabbed 2 different kinds..one was lentils and yellow split pea...so I found a recipe for the lentils in pasta..DH won't eat lentils or ANY weird foods-I am more adventurous, so this will be something I can cook and heat up..I need to get back into eating pasta again now that I am riding my bike again..need the energy...

Opps here's the lentil pasta thingy

20 Minute Mediterranean Linguine

There's a short video showing how to make it-looks really easy....

They used to call me "The Nori Queen" because I loved it so much! :D It is so good. Chickpeas, too -- I make a yellow curry with those and cauliflower that I love.

My brother makes chickpea "tuna" salad. He actually eats fish (pesco-vegetarian) so I guess he just does it for variety. I really can't tell the difference, it's amazing. I don't know what recipe he uses, all i know is that there is nori in it (but we use nori in everything, lol). Of all the vegetarian meat substitutes I've tried, that one is the most convincing.

I recently found Instant Pot recipes for Butter Chicken and Tikka Masala. So good. I said I'll never eat anything else again, haha. So far it's been 2 weeks and I'm not tired of it yet. . .

I overslept! I finally got to sleep this morning at around 7:30, and when the alarm went off, I hit the off switch and just rolled back over! The power is back on, and other than a LOT of downed branches, everything is fine. We must have been without power for about 4 hours, but that's all. LOL, getting UN-ready for this storm is going to be the biggest pain! It's still very breezy, but sunny and nice out. A BIG branch came off of one of the pine trees out back, and smashed into my back door frame. Six inches up and four inches over, and it would have come through the glass. I had a hard time sleeping, because I could hear stuff hitting the back side of the building where all the trees are all night long. I'm still about half asleep.

After Florence last year, I decided to be proactive about hurricanes. I made a list of what I need for Hek and me to survive for three weeks without power. THIS year, I laid in those supplies in March and April, including batteries and bottled water. ALL of that goes in one place in my pantry, and STAYS THERE. At the end of the season, I'll pull it out and use it during the rest of the year, then restock NEXT season. I do want to get a couple more LED camp lanterns, though. One is ENOUGH, but the one I have is a small one, and I have to hold it on my chest to read by it!

I imagine by now, Dorian has been neutered, and is a pale shadow of what hit the Bahamas. We really dodged a bullet on this one.

Haven't been here for a while because of the move to Reno and the fractured ankle to boot. Now staying at my son's hose until I can find a place of my own. Going to an open house on Sunday which looks really good and is affordable, I hope I get that.

With everybody talking about food let me tell you about the problem I have run into. Since I don't pay rent here I had volunteered to do the cooking which I love, my son had bragged that I was such a good cook and his wife Laurie had made a comment that maybe then she would be eating more wholesome food. Here's the kicker. She and her son Chris (age 30) are both obsessive/compulsive to a degree. But in contrast to most OCDs they are both unable to see dirt. When I asked if something had been washed (it was unbelievably dirty) they took it as an affront, I have learned not to say anything, just clean whatever offends me, they don't see the difference. How they can live this way is beyond me and I will be very happy to get out of here. No wonder my son prefers to be out on the road.
The cooking is something else altogether as they are stuck on certain things, eat hardly any veggies or fruit, most things they eat are from cans, packages or brought in ready-made or sandwiches with the same old ham and cheese and nothing else on it. Salads? No way, so I have to make that just for myself. I found a nice farmers market (although they close pretty soon for the season until April or so) with wonderful peaches, plums and tomatoes, they are wasted on these two. Chris will only eat bananas or canned fruit, Laurie won't touch any lettuce that is not iceberg, the list goes on. So how can I cook something tasty when they object to anything that looks or tastes different from the junk they are used to eating? Even my son who used to eat anything I put on the table and still does when he eats at my home, will not eat any green vegetable when he is at his own home. They all ate macaroni and cheese and beef stroganoff but objected to a tomato sauce which had been made from fresh tomatoes saying it was sour! It was really sweet but they prefer tomato sauce from a jar. I made a chicken dish which had cream of mushroom soup in it which they liked but a Salisbury steak dinner was "too hard". Cooking here is going to be a real challenge. Anything I bring in (on my dime) that is not their brand they find objectionable including toilet paper or paper towels or a laundry detergent (they use a heavily scented one which I can't stand, I like mine without any scent).
The worst of being here is the incessant smoking, both cigarettes, vaping and pot which is legal here. At least my son does not indulge in pot on account of his job but I always think that this polluted air will cling to me and my clothes and hair so I hide out in my room with the cats most of the time where I can open the window. It has been very hot here (in the 90s but quite cool at night) but I do have a fan and a window a/c in my room so it has not been too bad. Those two don't even notice when I am not in the same room with them. They either stare at the TV full of junk programs or at their comps or their phones, sometime at all of them at the same time. So yes, I will be glad to have my own place with my own things asap. Thanks for listening to me.

Mamanyt1953 Mamanyt1953 So glad to hear you're both okay. Hope you get some well-earned rest! and good on ya for being proactive and prepared. I've done that for most of my life and really believe in it. Getting our cat supplies delivered is a huge help, too, and since I have a lot of storage space I'm able to keep in a good supply of their food and litter, as well as canned/dry goods for me, just in case, and water.
segelkatt segelkatt *PRAYERS* and hope for you to get that place! Sounds like it wouldn't be a moment too soon. Maybe your good cooking will inspire some creativity and a more varied diet, even if just once in awhile, by your hosts. My ex was raised on pretty much that kind of diet, and that's his go-to, but being together gave him a lot of exposure to international choices and fresh produce, a lot of which he liked a lot. Sometimes that's all it takes. So many people never go outside their comfort zones and what they were raised with, in more than just diet, unfortunately! but broadening the horizons is almost always a good thing, and sharing, likewise.

I wish it was that easy. Those two have actually gone and thrown food away and went out to get junk food. Nothing but lip service that they were looking forward to having "good food" but they won't eat it, actually said because it was because of OCD and have a hard time to change anything including throwing things away because they did not need them or they did not work anymore. So cabinets are full of stuff nobody uses but because those 15 pyrex baking dishes were her mother's, a coffee maker that does not work and just takes up space in a kitchen that does not have enough counter or cabinet space and should be in the trash etc etc..
