There was a a national Clear the Shelters event on Aug. 17: Finding Forever Homes The event seems to occur every summer

Adoption fees were reduced or even free. The event may still be ongoing at some shelters. Check at your local shelters :).

The SPCA shelter here waived all adoption fees :catrub: It was tempting to go just to "look" but I know from experience I would just bring someone home :running:

Hey, guys. Serious question. A friend of mine is struggling badly after losing her premature son. We're in a book club together and we (the book club) have done some post self care things for her but right now (tonight) is particularly bad for her and we're trying to figure out how to help her (it's an international book club very similar to this site, so physically showing up with a casserole will be tough to pull off).

Any suggestions? Thanks! :(
Oh God, how sad.

The mystery of my non existing address thickens.
911 has decided that the county is going to change some addresses. There are 3 people on my easement. Two of them received the letter from the county. In the letter, they were told the new address. I have not yet received anything. One of my neighbor's new address...is mine.
When we moved in, 18 years ago, 911 gave us this address (they weren't there). So it is on record with them. I've had the sheriff here, so I know it's good with the county.
Why in the world would they give my neighbor my address and not notify me of any changes? We all have a PO box at the same post office, so it's not like they got theirs differently.
The one neighbor (who's getting my address) has contacted the county and they will investigate it.
If they change our addresses, we have to change everything from our DL address to our mortgage company.

This is a mess.

That moment when your local shelter reduces the adoption fee to $25 for cats and $50 for dogs...
Our local no-kill shelter is always $20 for kittens, $10 for cats, working cats (feral/barn cats) are usually free and various amounts for dogs. Depending on breed.

The SPCA shelter here waived all adoption fees :catrub: It was tempting to go just to "look" but I know from experience I would just bring someone home
And that's how I got Kumal. Except I went to volunteer.

It would be different if they were changing it from 123 Maple street (made up address) to 456 Jacobs Lane. But they are changing it from 123 Maple street to 120 Maple street.

I'd send some flowers with a note that you're there for her if she needs you. It's hard when you're not physically there. If you don't like the flower idea, maybe a donation in her name to someplace like St. Jude's children's hospital or something similar. How tragic. My sympathies to her and her family. Go snuggle with the angels, little one.
Just an unasked-for reply, Kat0121 Kat0121 , because you may not be aware that that charity, as well as most of those children's charities, are scams designed to separate the gullible from their money and that all of them, that I know of, are either directly or indirectly involved in animal "research" that causes untold suffering and death to animals of all species in the name of "cures" that never happen and never will, because humans are not members of other species and extrapolation yields no positive results. Even the "experts" agree when they are being honest, which of course they aren't often, because that would dry up the grants and public donations.

:alright:
I found my first pure white hair when I was in high school:shocked: I figured it must have been a mutated strand of hair. I have very dark hair so any white hairs are easily seen. A co-worker is in her early 20s and has gray hair mixed with her light brown hair

I fully recognize that this is petty, but today I found my first grey hair and I'm a bit upset. I'm only in my early 30s :(
GIRL! I got my first grey hair at the tender age of 19! And I'm sure I have several more because they fall out sometimes. Don't feel a way about it.

I screamed and kinda cried... ran to my mom and showed her. I cut that sucker and it's still my longest hair. It grows stronger and faster than the rest. Why? I have no idea...

When I was tutoring this spring, one of my kindergarteners was trying to guess how old us tutors were. He got to me and peered at me, then said, "I don't know how old you are, but you're old!"

"Really? How come?!" I asked.

"Because you have gray hair," he said matter-of-factly. And then proceeded to lean over to me and point to each one of them. "There's one, and there, and there, and there....."

As the other tutor put it, he proceededto draw a map of all my gray hairs (I'm dark blonde bordering on light brown).

Gee, thanks for making 33 seem old, kid!

Little stinker.

I definitely have a few here and there. I name them after troublesome students, and I think they started showing up in my 20s? I don't have enough to make dying my hair worth it yet, though.

My mom only just now has obvious silver streaks, at 64. My grandma didn't have fully gray hair even when she died at 96. I only have a few silver hairs (I'll be 40 soon). Lucky us! But I sort of like silver hair. Oh well.

My brother (33) has one small patch of pure white hair. No other grays/silvers. But he's always had it; apparently he has a birthmark there that did something to the pigment of those hairs.

For the record, she asked us if we had donations (money, supplies, blankets, hats etc) to send them to our local neonatal units in memory of her son.
I think that would be the best thing to do. I can't imagine the pain of losing a child. I don't think there's anything that can make that better. Time might dull the pain or allow her to bury it a bit, but it will always be there. The donations are a way to keep his memory alive, not just in her mind but in the minds of everyone who receives them. Knowing that he made an impact on the world in his short time here might be what she needs to go on.

When I was in the hospital after having my bypass surgery, I could walk out of my room and across the hall was a wall of windows. One floor down and across the driveway was the NICU. I could see the UV lights they had on at night. My son, Nick, was in the NICU for the first month of his life. I always hoped the ones that I was seeing survived like he did.

My friend's daughter was looking at my ponytail that is brown at the end and shades to grey at the top. I told her it was because it was turning to pure silver. I got an eye-roll, a grin and a Yeah, right. Which was exactly what I was hoping for!

I don't really care what color it is, except orange. One day, I will grow up and ditch the ponytail, but not yet.
