Feeling Very Proud And Happy

Just wanted to post a little something that really tugs at the heart strings. But first here is a little poster that our shelter put up.


This is SO TRUE!!!!!
This was Lily our depressed, timid little girl the day we brought her home. She was a shell of a cat but desperately needed some love. Our shelter told us that they did not think she would survive much longer without a loving home. She just stayed where we put her, without the confidence to even adjust herself to be more comfortable.


And now look this this precious little girl!!! She is relaxed, happy and confident! She is so affectionate and has even started to play not only with us but with her "brothers" (also adopted from the shelter). She has started talking to us, following us...her transformation is something we are so proud and happy of. She even had significant muscle atrophy due to the fact that she was malnourished (before being rescued by the shelter) and the fact that she never moved. Now she can jump up onto the cat tree and run up and down the stairs like a pro!



This last photo is of Lily and Chester. Chester has a thing about building a fort for himself with cup holders. We found this out when my husband had a couple on the couch after bringing home some coffee/tea. He buried himself under one of the holders and then pulled the second one over himself. It was so funny. So now, my husband has been keeping them for Chester to play with. The first photo is just of Chester, in the second photo you'll see Lily trying to join in the fun!



And this last one is after play time was over.

That first picture is classic learned helplessness, what a shame she had to go through that but look at her now!
We adopted a very old dog from a pound years ago. This dog was frail, older than God and wobbled when she walked because the food they were feeding was kibble the size of baseballs and this dog had no teeth and wasn't eating any food.
Kittens and puppies are very cute, but if you're going to do it right, it's a lot of work. They both need a lot of play, a lot of ways to release that pent up teenager energy, training, and will break things, chew things, destroy things, and annoy you in the middle of the night. Pups will whine and howl and kittens will meow and knock things over and use you as a human boardwalk at 2:30 in the morning.
An older pet is sometimes the best choice, you skip all that, and as the poster says, they haven't given up.
Many years ago I saw a picture of an adult cat in the news paper up for adoption. The look on that cats face was sad, scared, but a little hopeful. It hit me where it hurt, so I cut that out and it's still in my wallet. I wasn't in any position to adopt anything except a pet rock at the time and often hope someone was kind enough to adopt what appeared to be a sweet little cat.

I love your story about Lily. She sounds like she is a very happy girl now! How wonderful that you and your husband were there to give her a chance and a loving home!

They actually mention ALL THE TIME, on their facebook page about how black kitties don't get adopted as quickly. Any time a black cat is up for adoption they always put a little blurb in their profile about it as well.

FYI, this is Bynx, the third cat we adopted when we adopted Lily and Chester.

Don't mind the snot on his face, he had a URI when we adopted him and it was always running. He's all good now. :D
