When we originally got Emerson and Evie, we wanted to go with an author/poet theme, hence Emerson. Evie was originally Bronte, but it just didn't fit her. We decided on another E name, and Pokémon Go had just become popular...so we took Eevee (a type of Pokémon) and modified it to Evie.

Dexter was so named because he was found as a stray in a parking deck. Dexter...deck-ster...

Guard Kitten (RIP) - we didn’t have any dogs, so I said she was our protection

Ringo (RIP) - grey tabby with a perfect white ring around the end of his tail

Aretha (avatar pic) - she thinks she’s queen of the kitties

Tiger (yellow tabby) - our grand daughter named him

Tweet - started out as Sweetie, but somewhere along the line got shortened to Tweet

Happy (Happs) - when she was a kitten she would always greet you by rearing up on your lower leg like a dog, so I figured she must be really happy to have adopted us for her family

Fred - he just looks like a “Fred”

I've never named any of our cats, they came that way from the shelter and that's who they were/are. Fortunately, I haven't had any with really weird names, but if that were the case I would probably just give them a nickname. They all get nicknames anyway eventually.
I should mention that our current cat Austin was named that by his foster mama. He was adopted as a kitten and renamed Beethoven. We have him now and he is back to Austin. I can't even imagine calling him Beethoven.

Count's name comes from two places;
1. Since cats do act like royalty, it makes sense to name them accordingly.
2. Some time before I adopted Count, I saw some black cats in the neighborhood yawn, and noticed their terrifying teeth. They looked like little vampires. Combine that Count's huge ears that look like bat wings, the name Count (Dracula) fits perfectly.

Gizmo - Short answer is I had just watched Gremlins and desperately wished I could have a real life mogwai named Gizmo. Since they’re unfortunately not real, I decided to name my next kitten that. The shelter had named him Stan so it got switched to Gizmo very quickly!

Stevie - I always used to say if I ever had kids I’d name a little girl Stevie just for how unconventional it’d be. Also Steve Yzerman was my absolute favorite hockey player and his nickname was Stevie Y. Since my “if I ever have kids” turned into a do not ever want, I named my cat that instead.

Remy was Sammie at the shelter and Maisie was Magnolia or Maggie. I wasn't a huge fan of either name so I decided to change them, plus my grandparents had a dog named Maggie and my aunt has a cat named Sam, so I didn't want a repeat. I went with Maisie because it was similar to what she had been called the 2 years she was at the shelter and I didn't want to confuse her too much.
I got the name Remy from the movie Ratatouille. The rat is named Remy and it works too because my Remy is a huge brat so he earned the nickname Bratatouille. A few weeks after I adopted them, I realized Remy was also a subtle reference to my favorite TV show (Castle) because a restaurant called Remy's is mentioned in a few episodes.

Our current cats in order of arrival to our home:

Estella Flannery Thyme. She was named after the character "Estella" from "Great Expectations," the author Flannery O'Conner, and the herb Thyme (also, the tv show "Rosemary and Thyme").

Astrid Cordelia Rose, Estella's littermate. Named after author Astrid Lindgren, Anne Shirley's dream name, and the flower because it went with Thyme.

Fennimore Strider Black. Named after the street he was found on and the author, James Fenimore Cooper, a character from Lord of the Rings, and a character from Harry Potter.

Willow Elizabeth Sage, Fennimore's littermate (they have a brother named Pip who lives with my friend). She is named after a character from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," Queen Elizabeth I, and the sage plant.

Simon Greystoke Thane. He was named after a character from the tv show "Firefly," the movie "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan Lord of the Apes," and the thanes from Beowulf and Macbeth.

Tara Lenore Tierney, Simon's best friend who was found with him. She actually saved his life. She began her life with us named Lenore. My friend was going to keep her and wanted to change her name to Tara. Tara loved me and could not be separated from Simon, so she stayed. By then, she knew her name. Tara is a character from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Lenore is from Edgar Allan Poe, and Tierney is after the actress Gene Tierney.

Freya Adeline Prynne, our wild baby. She is named after the Goddess Freya, Adeline Ravoux (painted by Vincent van Gogh), and Hester Prynne from "The Scarlet Letter."

Evangeline Evaine Snow, aka Her Royal Highness Evangeline Evaine Snow, Princess Piggy Piggy the Benevolent Ruler of All. She is named after the Longfellow poem, the character Yvaine from Stardust, and Snow White. She was also caught on the first snowfall of the year. She is obviously royalty.

Silas Endeavour Book, the baby of the family. He is named after Silas Marner, the main character of "Endeavour" and "Inspector Morse," and a character from "Firefly." Endeavour is perfect for him because he was such a mess when we found him but endeavored through it all.

I came up with the name Shaman for my white calico as she was just like a "human Shaman", knowing just when I was down and needed to be comforted. Shadow was like her Shadow lol and Treasure was always digging around like looking for gold or something. When Noobs appeared I just called him that for New Cat on the Block but after another Noobs appeared I decided to give them proper names. So Noobs 1 became Ambrose and Noobs 2 is now Cooper. Another black cat showed with white patterns on her fur and what appeared to be a star on the top of her head. I originally gave her the Lakota name Wichapi which means star but when I was finally able to see her closer up I realized she looked like she was wearing Egyptian jewelry around her neck (the fur pattern) and so I changed the name to Sopdet which is Egyptian but also means star. Shadow is now at a no kill shelter and I have no idea if they found her a home or not. Anyway just how I came up with the names for these cats. :)

Nightfury was found in a box with another little one, probably about three/four weeks old. We weren’t planning on keeping him and he was “black kitten” for a good two months. My Mom likes How to Train Your Dragon and he looked kinda like that as little kitten but she said she couldn’t name him Toothless. He spent a week as Coal but she didn’t like it for him. So Nightyfury (the type of dragon instead of dragons name) it was. Normally we call him Fury or Furry depending on mood.

Link, I was thinking Lynx and people kept hearing Link when I said it. I like the Zelda video games and used to watch my parents play the original version as a kid, so Link (the hero/main character) wasn’t a bad choice. It worked and it seemed to fit him so Link it was.

Rocket, feral dumped on my doorstep. No name for a few weeks because (again) wasn’t planning on keeping. But Link feel in love with the kitten so it stayed. As a kitten she looked like she was wearing a mask or a little raccoon and I love the guardian of the galaxy movie so Rocket the Raccoon is actually her full name. We didn’t find out until a few weeks later he was a she and Rocket just fit so well it stayed. Little ball of energy with attitude and I could totally see her blasting laser guns, building bombs and stealing from people for fun.

Always wanted a black kitty... and then i found a beautiful black stray in an alley. Couldnt leave her so i picked her up, telling myself ill take her to a shelter, but i got attached quick. For the first week or so i was still debating keeping her so i didmt want to name her... id get home and shed run up to me and she was so sweet and friendly, one day i said "arent ypu a little honeybun". Tje next day i got home and called "cmere honeybun!" It staryed to be a daily thing.

After a week i was sure i was keeping her. I wanted a cool, black panthery name. NYX, Midnight, Salem...but although she had a beautiful black coat, her purrrsonality just wasnt panthery, it was sweet and derpy. So i thought why not just call her Honeybun? It wasnt quite right tho-then i thought of Honeybunny from Pulp Fiction-perfect name, cutesy but with a bit of edge from the movie reference. And thats how Honeybunny got her name :)

Her nicknames change tho, lately its Bun or Bunny rabbit

I can't possibly go through all the names, but Baby Girl was easy. We tried out so many names and none of them fit her bold personality. Naming cats is usually easy for us, but she was a challenge. Since she didn't have a name, when I'd go to feed her or we'd put her eye drops in, we'd say "Come on, Baby Girl" and she'd run to us. That stuck because she's 5 years old, and she's still my little Baby Girl.

Have you ever named a new baby kitten something like "Jim" and took "Jim" in for a neuter, only to be called by the vets to tell you that "Jessi" is ready to be picked up, because you weren't so great at telling the sex of a kitten?

Great name.
Next time we adopt a senior cat or dog, their name is going to be Professor Farnsworth.
Excellent name!
Also- I've seen you around this forum and have read every single one of your posts in Fry's voice. :nerd:

Amelia was named Millie by the rescue. I decided that Millie would be her nickname and Amelia would be her full name.

When I got my second cat, I already kind of wanted to use the name "Mischief", but wasn't sure if I'd get a cat that would fit it. Well, the cat I got had been returned twice before and was allegedly a troublemaker, so Mischief was a perfect name for her. I call her Missy for short.
