I posted about my youngest son, Nates plan to hike the Pacific Crest Trail awhile back (more like whined about it!). I thought I would give an update. He started the Tuesday after Easter. He is going south to north on the trail. So far he has made it just north of Big Bear Lake and I believe is now in the Mojave Desert. He still has a LONG way to go since he isn't even half way through California yet and he still has Oregon and Washington to get through. He called me on Mothers Day when he had service for his phone, which was a wonderful surprise! Other than his GPS texts, which are automated, I didn't expect to hear from him until he was on his way home.

I'm glad he's doing well. I hope he's taking pictures along the way. :)

How is the hike going? Did he finish?
The hike is over 2600 (yes you read correctly over 2 thousand) miles. He is only around 660 into it. He is having to take a few days off due to shin splints, but should be back on the trail Friday or Saturday. This photo was taken before he got to the Mojave desert. Last we texted he said the Mojave was pretty brutal since water resupply spots were few.

So sweet to call you on Mother's Day.
He is clearly enjoying it !
Positive vibes for a swift recovery.

He is now near the Mount Whitney side trail (almost directly east of Fresno). This past Sunday there was a hiker who disappeared from that area. He was last seen on the summit of Mt Whitney. His body was found 1900 foot from the summit a few days later. Nate texted his girlfriend that the conditions are bad (slippery and snowy) so he is flying to the Canadian end and hiking north to south in hopes that the conditions improve by the time he gets back south. I have made the mistake of watching YouTube videos of each sectiona s he hikes it. The river and creek crossing are what nightmares are made of - snow fed torrents. I will be SO HAPPY when he is finished so I can quit worrying until the next hike. IF I wasn't gray haired already I would be now!!!

Sounds like Nate is doing the smart thing. So sad about the other hiker.

My DH is watching a documentary on the PCT in the winter tonight. It looks very beautiful but yikes. I'm glad he is able to change plans a little and go where the conditions are safer!!

He is actually home for a week before starting the northern end. I am hoping that he finds a soft bed and the lure of his girlfriends cooking to much to resist and will decide to stay home.:) Fat chance!

I found out yesterday that one of the last days he hiked before deciding to flip and hike south from Canada he had a bear encounter, was stalked by 3 mountain lions (a mother and juveniles we think) and a pack of coyotes. See why I worry? He didn’t want me to know about. He gets back on trail tomorrow.
