This is Dollys human, we haven't been on for a long time now because Dolly is sick. It's to the point now where I had to had her hospital for animals all week. And probably another. They think her kidneys might be going out... I don't want her to suffer from kidney disease like I have to. She's 16 years 6 months old. What would you do in my shoes ...

I'm so sorry that you and Dolly are going through this. This might be better as its own thread in the cat health forum. I think it's time to have "that" talk with Dolly's vet. That's what I would do. Ask him/her what they would do if Dolly were their cat. I'm going to flag your post and ask a mod to put this on the cat health forum. Not that you did anything wrong but it will get more views there and you will get the advice and support you need and deserve. Much love to you and sweet Dolly. :hugs:

I've had three kidney cats and my heart bleeds for you :hugs:. But I do agree with Kat0121 Kat0121 in that discussing "what's next" with your Vet is probably the best course of action here.

You didn't mention it here in this new thread, but you said they think her kidney's might be going out. So has she not even really been diagnosed with kidney disease? Is this something that suddenly came on, like Acute Kidney Disease, or something that has been slowly getting worse, like slowly losing weight, losing her appetite, drinking more, etc.? All I can tell you for sure with all of mine is that they never required hospitalization, but we did do sub-q fluids at home on a regular basis once they reached a certain stage, along with giving them medications for over acidity, appetite enhancers, that sort of thing.

But our rule of thumb was, when they started having more bad days than good, on a regular basis, then it was time :frown:. I say on a regular basis because with kidney cats there is definitely a cycle. they might go for a week have bad days the entire time, then perk up for a couple weeks. But YOU are the one who knows Dolly the very best, and when you see that Joy of Life leave her eyes, then it's time :sniffle: :alright:

Thanks I didn't know how to start my own thread so thank you. I am starting to feel that this vet is out for money, he knows that my mom's is covering the bill with her credit card for me. And to me that is wrong terribly wrong . But yet I am having trouble with picturing her no longer in my life at ALL. I know that it is selfish but I've had her since she was 3-4weeks old and bottle feed dolly also. Help.

Get a second opinion. You are Dolly's advocate and protector. If you feel in your heart that this vet is not out for Dolly's best interests, find another one. Our gut feelings about things are rarely wrong. If you find another vet, he/she can request that Dolly's records be sent to them.

Come Monday morning I think I will do just that . Thank you again.

Can you at least tell us what's happening with Dolly that you took her to see the Vet in the first place? And if you have any bloodwork results you can post, or things the Vet has said specifically, that might help us help you!

Here is a link to the a website that was my "go to" for my kidney cats when they were still alive: Tanya's Comprehensive Guide to Feline Chronic Kidney Disease - Everything You Need to Know to Help Your Cat IF it's kidney disease, perhaps something there will help you, maybe even help you determine if that's what it could possibly be. That isn't an interactive website, just informational.

I'm sorry been very upset forgot to tell you that part. She got where she stopped eating for 3 days and nights in a row , but before that I had to fight with her to get her to eat and drink water both so much. Then during the 3 days of not eating she was drinking water and loosing weight. So I talked to the vet first thing on Monday morning and they said get her now. So I walked dolly up to the vet 2 miles away from us... it felt like a million when you have a cat freaking out all the time and your holding on for dear life to her... That was the beginning, but then they found elevated kidney levels with blood work .And now she's developing black tar loose stools.

If you don't have a carrier for Dolly, ask the vet for one. Most vets can provide a sturdy cardboard carrier which should make taking her to and from easier. If they hesitate remind them that you are walking with her and afraid she will escape.

prayers for Dolly and you.

I had a carrier for her but lent it to my stepmother and she NOW refuses to give it back. Because of that I was left carrying a inside only 16 years old 6 months cat. Don't you just love family... ugh!

As someone who has lost three kit kats to an organ failure - despite my many, desperate efforts - sooo much love I am sending your way to both of you!
I agree in both seeking a second opinion, and getting a solid answer. I will say that it's also true that if it's "time," you'll know. And don't let yourself cling to an unfounded hope if it's not good for your baby. I did that with my kitten Watson. I just kept doing more tests and stabilizing care until he just gave out, and I had to let him go because he had nothing left in him. My only peace is that I know he knows he was loved, and I know he loved me.
What I am poorly explaining is that you have to listen to your gut, mind and heart.
Know that, no matter what happens, she knows you love her and she loves you. NOTHING ever takes that away.

Dolly2002 Dolly2002 I'm very sorry this is happening. I hope it's just an illness that she recovers from in no time.
If you absolutely can't get a carrier, could you use a harness made for cats with a leash attached and still carry her, so if she does manage to get away, you at least have a leash in your hand that's attached to her (so she can't get away)? You'll also have the harness to hold onto while she's in your arms so you won't have to apply a lot of pressure to her, just the harness.
Some of the harnesses are adjustable with a simple sliding technique, these are nice for carrying cats as you can cinch them up a little tighter than a walking harness to (hopefully) prevent them from slipping out.
I hope you get some good answers tomorrow. We're pulling for you :grouphug:

If you can't do the carrier, or the harness, will she fit in a backpack or a large pocket book? It's just a thought.

Oh and the vet won't give me copies of the blood work that's been going on with her. I have to call them to find out what going on with her after testing is done!!!

The backpack is an excellent idea if she's calm there. Sometimes if they can't see what's upsetting around them, they relax (same thing as covering a carrier with a large towel.) "If you can't see it, it can't hurt you".

Never thought of them honestly, because if she's ever even went on the deck outside I hold her the whole time .

did the vet or the person at the front desk refuse to give you the copies of the blood work? Not every vet knows what goes on in his office. Except every last one of them knows how much they charge for stuff, don't believe one that says otherwise.

Holding is a bit dangerous. If something frightens her she may try to escape. I know you'd let her rip you up and continue to hold onto her, but in your fear you may hold her tight enough to hurt her. It wouldn't be your fault or hers, but it is something to be avoided.

Once a cat panics and runs they sometimes fail to recognize their person's voice or face. It's panic, not how she feels about her person, but it makes it very hard to get them back when they run.

I'm not criticizing you, I'm saying the risk is high, particularly now that she isn't feeling well. I know everything you do for her and with her comes from love.
