I only spend money on two daily essentials: food (commercial raw is not cheap) and litter. My cats have plenty of toys which they mostly ignore so I don't buy anymore. They love boxes which I get for free from work since I don't order stuff online very often.

Lots of cats prefer free and DIY toys and stuff to store bought :) You can buy the newest fancy toy or bed or whatever only to find that your cat totally ignores it, preferring a simple empty toilet paper tube to bat around or your sink to sleep in.

Depending on the cat, it's usually really easy to make things yourself or do things yourself. You can also repurpose cheap items to be functional for your cat.

The most I spend on is food and vet bills. Especially vet bills.

The bottle caps I don't know why but she loves them and balls she could chase them for days I might need to get a kids gate or something to keep the balls in one place she loves to push them into dark corners so I have to get down and pick them up

My cat Buddy is a bigger guy (16lbs) and likes to drink a lot of water... this causes me to go through litter very quickly. I totally replace the litter at least once a month and that adds more cost. I want my babies to be as clean as possible!

The most I ever spent on my cats was vet bills. One year I had 5 cats and the vet bills came to $10,000. There was nothing really expensive, just normal things.

On food and litter I do. I have one cat with IBS and allergies and one cat that needs one brand of cat litter in one specific type of litterbox or he pees willy-nilly. Honestly he still does pee out of the box so we have specialty water-proof blankets we use to catch his urine with expensive cleansers.

We don't begrudge them at all though. My husband can't sleep without his buddy (the peer) and the cat with IBS is the ONLY cat we've ever chosen to adopt out of all the cats we've had in our life together.

Vet expenses are very high obviously but we try to negate that by having a mobile vet and doing fosters. So the mobile vet comes out a bit frequently so we can just say do the fosters appointments and then add on our personal cats at full price. It's still cheaper than going to our regular vet that is in a very rich area whose office has a lot of overhead.

As is said by others, cats like cheap, homemade toys just as well as expensive ones.

You're wise to put aside money for your cat, though, because vet bills can drain your bank account in a blink.

I'd suggest that every time you're tempted to buy something for your cat that you put the money aside for future care. instead That way, both of you win.

I'd suggest a Scoop Free self-cleaning litter box when you can afford it. It scoops the entire box twenty minutes after the cat uses it. It's a bit more expensive for the cartridges (cheaper from Chewy) but it keeps the odor down and your cat always has a fresh, clean box. After about 65 uses, you remove the box of litter at the bottom, put the cover on it, and put in a new box. Add the provided litter and you're done. Don't buy LitterMaid, though. They break quickly and the company doesn't really stand behind them. Plus, they're noisy and prone to jamming.

We have a Scoop-Fre in our bedroom and Chocolate isn't the best about covering anything. We still don't have odor. We keep an open jar of Smells BeGone® Odor Neutralizing Gel Beads by the pan to further keep down smells. They really work. We get ours from Bed Bath & Beyond, but I'm sure you can find them lots of places.

I don't remember everything that was done that year. They all had their teeth cleaned, shots,Muffin and Tiger had the thyroid treatment Baxter had cancer on his toe and it had to be removed and I had to have Buddy and Tiger pts. That is all I remember but I am sure there was more stuff done that year. I miss them like crazy.
