This is to up date previous posts, which I can't find at the moment, about the
Phenobarbital found in Smuckers and Champion dog food. This isn't a new recall and it doesn't extend the earlier ones, it is merely more information.

JBS knowingly distributed products containing euthanasia drug | Food Safety News

"The warning letter to JBS Souderton Inc. which does business as MOPAC was sent more than one year after phenobarbital was first discovered in beef tallow from the company’s Souderton, PA, facility.
JBS was the supplier of beef tallow to Big Heart Pet Brands Inc. and to Champion PetFoods, among others.

Big Heart is a wholly owned subsidiary of The J.M. Smucker Company Inc. Champion is a Canadian pet food company whose U.S. production facility is in Auburn, KY. It manufactures Acana and Orijen brands of dry dog food."

General information - Big Heart brand includes Meow Mix, Kibbles 'n Bits, Milk-Bone, 9Lives, Natural Balance, Pup-Peroni, Gravy Train, Nature’s Recipe, Canine Carry Outs, and Milo’s Kitchen. Ever Pet, Special Kitty.

Once they opened the KY manufacturing plant the formula changed for the worse and I stopped buying Acana for our dog. Actually he must have noticed the difference because he didn't even want to eat it - smart dog! ;)

I am on BC Canada and had bought Acana dry for a year for our cat , I wonder if that could have been affected as well

The Acana I originally bought for our dog was from Canada and it is my understanding at that time it was different than the product distributed from the Kentucky manufacturing plant, i.e. not same formula. Since I'm in the U.S. the product from Canada was no longer available here so I stopped using it.

The Orijen from the KY plant was/is certainly different from that made in Canada.

I used to feed Acana to my dogs when it was imported in the States from Canada, but after only one bag from the Kentucky plant I switched, how disappointing and frustrating.

Back when I was feeding our dog Acana and could no longer get it from Canada I called customer service for the Kentucky location. I was concerned because the formula on the package had clearly changed. The rep. I spoke to was extremely rude and not helpful. Just one more reason why I was fed up. :mad2:

I was blown away by the formula changes, not to mention the price hike and shrinking weight per bag!

The goodwill a company builds can only last so long. So long, Champion.
