It takes a while for their manes to grow in properly. My long haired cats didn't get their manes until they were about 2 years old, they grow back thicker every year. I guess Fluffy is going to have a splendid mane when he's older.

So, out of curiosity... Piper was a stray, so obviously I don't know her exact age, but the vet said she's very young and guessed her age at about 1 (maybe younger) and she is already pretty floofy. Does this mean that she will only get floofier (is that a word)?

The vet did tell me that she thought she would get a lot more hair, but as of right now, she doesn't have significantly more hair than she did in October. Better groomed and healthier looking for sure, but still...

I'm a first time cat owner, so I am still learning. Lol.

This was her rough looking little self back in October. I think she slept for a solid week or two after she walked into our house.

Awww, Piper is so cute! I'm glad you could give her a good home. All of mine were former feral or rescued strays too.

Yes, I think she will get a lot floofier as she grows up. (If that isn't a word it really should be.) Most of my cats are five or older now, so I think they've probably reached their full floofiness.

Proper nutrition will help her coat too. One of my rescues was really sick and skinny when I found her. Her coat came out in handfuls at first, so much that you could see her skin in places. But then her coat grew back and it's really soft and thick now. It took about a year before she looked really good.

I think temperature plays a big part in how thick their coats get too. We get very cold winters here and the cats have access to a big enclosure all year round, so they grow thick winter coats.

Forest Cat gets a haircut every spring. He must feel a lot better with all that thick fur shaved off.

Gustav and Anais were such floof balls of fur when I nabbed them in the middle of winter just before it dipped below zero. Since being indoors with heat they’ve lost their winter coats and are growing into sleek beautiful cats day by day. Gustav still has a massively fluffy tail though, whereas Anais has a long tin graceful one with straggly long hairs sticking out here and there like alfalfa. The pic of the two of them together was from this morning. The rest are younger days.

Aww thanks! They are definitely full of personality!
It felt like forever in choosing names. I really wanted Anais, but I also wanted matching names. In the end I went with Gustav because he kept looking at me whenever I said it as I went through the list out loud.

My younger daughter, Clora, has 4 dogs and 4 cats. She used to have 2 of her long haired- dogs shaved every Summer until her vets told her that long hair protected her dogs both against cold temps. in Winter and against hot weather in Summer. Any opinions?

Since posting the above message I have consulted google with the following result:
"Shaving your cat can cause problems for him.
Shaving your cat can leave him at higher risk of getting sunburns, since you’re leaving his normally protected skin exposed to the harsh rays of the sun. Shaving can also lead to ingrown hairs, which can in turn cause irregular fur growth and skin problems, all bad news for your kitty.

Still, not all cats are designed to withstand heat. Some cats, especially long-haired cats, can’t handle intense heat. If your cat is showing signs of distress during the summer, what you can do to help ease some of that heavy coat your cat is carrying around it is to trim it not shave it"

golondrina golondrina Forest needs a shave not just because of the heat, but because his fur mats so much. He's actually a lot better about allowing me to groom him than he used to be. This year I managed to keep him mat free head to tail, but his belly and back legs were still very matted. It can make it difficult to move around, sometimes the top of his legs mat together so he's not as mobile as he should be.

He doesn't get shaved right down to the skin, he gets a 2mm razor cut on his body, his head, legs and bottom of his tail are shampooed and brushed out when he goes for his hair cut. I've never had any problems with ingrown hairs. It's not that hot here and there's plenty of shade for him to relax.

He actually had his "spa day", haircut, shampoo, ears and eyes cleaned, claws trimmed and blood work done, last week.

He always seems much happier after he's had it all done. He looks gorgeous too.
