Treating Ringworm On Cat Furniture

Hello everyone!

First let me say thank you to the wealth of information on this forum about ringworm. I feel like I have been reading everything! I have some specific questions about cleaning the environment and I hope someone can advise me.

We have two beautiful and very expensive pieces of cat furniture: a cat tree and a "kitty barrel" that both had carpet/fabric on them.

We have vacuuumed and carpet cleaned everything with a mix of water and borax. We gave lysoled both from head to toe. We gave let them sit in the Florida sun for an afternoon (and plan to do a couple more because I hear sunlight kills ringworm).

What else could we do? I've actually messaged the folks who make the furniture to ask if they could reupholster the barrel, as it just has 2 cushions and definitely has the more porus/shaglike cover. The tree has more like microsuede and smooth fabric, although there is a scratching post as well as some fabric that is almsot like short carpet along the inside of the tree where steps are (like I said, beautiful tree - but so much fabric! Boo )

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We just ordered some Rescue (Accell) and have been bleach mopping and lysoling everything. Cats are in isolation and have no access to anything porous right now.

What about an upholstery steamer? I would imaging that the high heat would kill the spores and as far as I know steam cleaning is relatively gentile on most fabrics.

I agree with Jem about the upholstery steamer. I have read numerous articles about this cleaning approach being very effective. I have not had to try it out for myself (thankfully), but my sympathies to you. Good luck!

When we've encountered this problem at the shelter, we've used both a cleaner designed to destroy ringworm spores (similar to Accell) and then a steam cleaner on cat furniture we couldn't just discard.

Steam cleaning is my go-to since it's safe to use on pretty much anything you're likely to find in a Cat room.

I had a bad ring worn issue with a feral kitten I picked up who spread it to all my cats and even myself. It kept coming back and forth. I used resolve pet cleaner and kept treating the cats with cat anti fungal creams that were designed to be non toxic. I just kept doing it and the ringworm disappeared. I use resolve pet upholstery cleaner a lot almost weekly and had no problems with it affecting materials.

I just wanted to add that I was just persistent cleaning everything up and reapplying antifungals to my cats where they were licking each other and separated them during the time it said to. I think I even used a spray. It was rampant in my apartment but my daily vacuuming and dry environment with pet upholstery cleaner never even made any of their objects an issue. Try and avoid cleaning where spores can spread. I always used a anti allergen spray in the air prior to vacuuming just to keep stuff from going up in the air.

It was honestly just being persistent. It all cleared up in 2 weeks

When we got our kitty he had ring worm and what I did was made the mistake of letting him in the bedroom... Anywho, that is besides the point :-)

I washed the comforter twice a week, used damascus earth on the carpets, and after a vacuum you have to clean the inside... I also used apple cidar vinegar and sprayed it everywhere but it did have a smell and it does go away.....
