Purpose Pet Food came out with a freeze dried raw chicken recipe for cats; their freeze dried raw for dogs has been on the market for several years.

I'll call the company to find out the bone percentage and Calcium / phos ratio.

Carnivore Chicken:

Ground chicken, chicken heart, chicken gizzard, chicken bone, chicken liver, herring oil, organic apple cider vinegar, organic coconut oil, potassium chloride, dried kelp, sodium chloride, zinc proteinate, iron proteinate, vitamin e supplement, niacin supplement, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, thiamine mononitrate, d-calcium pantothenate, sodium selenite, riboflavin supplement, biotin, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin b12 supplement, folic acid, vitamin d3 supplement.

The company states that they:

" ... only work with suppliers who either have a humanely raised certification label or have extensive humanely raised practices. Our foods and treats are passionately prepared using humanely raised and human-grade, antibiotic-free and steroid-free meats, poultry, certified organic produce, certified organic minerals and natural vitamins in a human-grade food production facility."

That looks very good, L lisamarie12 , I'll be watching for news on the bone content, thank you for checking!
I'm responding to PPF's email now. The bone percentage is 5%, calcium phos ratio 1:3.1.

They would also like feedback re: additional proteins for the cat line, my first vote would be duck since there are cats who may be allergic to either chick or turkey.

I suggested also that it would be fantastic if they had a freeze raw option utilizing eggshell or a calcium supplement instead of bone. She's not sure it's feasible (balancing out phos without bone), however, I'm giving her a few examples of how it might be possible.

Here is the info re: bone:

"We keep the bone content around 5% for the cat food formula. Our Calcium / phos ratio is 1.3:1."

Wow, bone content of around 5% sounds like a gift at this point! Is the ratio okay? (I'm so clueless about that!)

My votes for new proteins would probably be duck and pork.

Thank you for checking on this, lisamarie12!

Sure, no problem. I ordered the FD chicken for Molly, I'll let you know how it works out.

Pork wasn't an option, however, I suggested three single protein choices vs two single protein and one two-in one option.

Glad for the update, lisamarie12! I hope Molly likes the food.

I have another question for you, if you don't mind: do you still feed your cats Fresh Is Best? One of our local stores has it in all recipes and it looks like the turkey is low in carbs (I think their "dry amount" is probably "dry matter"!) so I may try it. Though I'll check with them first on bone, given Ireland's constipation issue! The bone meal looks low on the ingredient list but even so.

Fresh is best is a very good freeze dried raw food. Unfortunately I had to stop using it because Mikey was getting constipated on FIB as well, it seems he can't have any ground bone or even bone meal. (I've noticed that even if I feed him low fat canned food, he gets constipated but not as bad as he did with ground bone / bone meal).

But FIB may work out with Ireland. If your local store carries FIB, maybe try the fattier duck recipe?

FIB's "dry amount" vs "rehydrated amount" isn't DMB, dry matter basis, it's still the GA, guaranteed analysis numbers. I remember because I had to contact them previously for the DMB numbers, unfortunately I no longer have the email although I think I contacted them re: DMB percetages for the turkey & duck recipes via their FB page. I do remember though that the carb percentages were still pretty low.

You asked before re: calcium / phos ratios, Purpose Pet Food being 1:3.1 which is okay. Feline-nutrition has an interesting article re: ca / p ratios:

"The ideal ratio of calcium to phosphorous in the feline diet is approximately 1.1:1. However, the ratio can vary from 0.9:1 up to 1.5:1 without any adverse consequences.³ Daily balance is not as vital as the overall balance over time, in weeks to months."

https://feline-nutrition.org/nutrition/dont-let-calcium-phosphorous-ratios-scare-you

I hope FIB works out for Ireland, let me know. :)

Thank you so much, L lisamarie12 ! I already sent a note to FIB through Facebook -- they say they're usually faster to respond to regular email but who knows! (I usually find the opposite with just about everything but there you go!)

I'm definitely going to keep fat in mind for Ireland, too. She seems to be doing well (knock wood and all that) with her pumpkin but I'd prefer to cut that back, if possible. I think my first step will be freezing excess fat from pork chops so I can add it to lean meat, like chicken breasts, which the cats love so much: I've always left a fair bit on pork but some packages have been fatty enough that I trimmed a bit.

With our penultimate tub of Rad Cat half-gone, I'm crossing my fingers that the second batch of Alnutrin goes over okay!

Thank you again, Lisamarie12!

That's a good idea, to use the pork fat, Dr. Pierson said she uses uncured, low sodium bacon fat when she needs to add fat to her cats meals. :)

Yes, despite my tremendous respect for Dr. Pierson, there's no way I'd put bacon fat in the cats' food! Even organic, uncured, low-sodium!

Just curious, what's the difference between pork fat and no nitrate, low sodium bacon pig fat?

That's a good question. It depends on the brand but in addition to some salt, there's often a bit of sugar plus some form of celery to replace the nitrates.

I know the amounts are small but beyond those things I'd rather not give the cats, I don't want any of us to get into a bacon habit! ;)

Sugar? Wow, didn't know that. I've seen "celery powder" in some canned foods. As far as salt, you're right, even e.g., low sodium turkey can contain far more salt than cats should have, for e.g., Boarshead low sodium is about 330 mg, too high. Plus that deli turkey often has other ingredients not good for kitties.

Hey, btw, I sampled PPF last night and this morning with Molly (I also gave Mikey just a few pieces, hopefully he'll be okay) and both cats LOVED it. The food looks like the Instinct Mixers -- little oval shape bites and are easy to mash up with my little olive fork and rehydrate. I'll take a photo later when she's eating and post it to this thread. It smells good too! :D I'll see how Molly does with this and if it works out, we'll definitely stay with Purpose.

Hi - I am interested in this one, too! Pila, raw kitty currently having occasional vomit issue, does need topper on her raw right now. Life's been so beautiful (no picky eater syndrome) and I totally forgot, but just remembered that they started to prefer Rabbit and Pork raw over Chicken and Turkey lately (since last summer?). Now that Pila seems to vomit Rabbit and Pork (not 100% determined), I am giving her raw Chicken, but she is not ... excited at all. Currently S&C Chick Chick is working fine as topper, but I am concerned about their bone contents, and company not disclosing much info. She gave me "meh :headshake:" with Primal Turkey ... Pure Bite Chicken stopped working either, I am guessing that might be bad batch though :confused2:

I'm sorry Pila is having occasional vomiting issues. Have you been able to address why Pila is vomiting? What does Pila's vet have to say about this? What kind of raw meals is Pila currently eating?

If you're just in need of a topper for Pila's raw food, I would actually suggest a freeze dried meat treat, vs a freeze dried food as a topper, for example, Whole Life turkey breast freeze dried treats, or Bravo freeze dried turkey breast meat, Barker's Kitchen (kind of pricey). There are a few FD treats on the market.

I understand re: Pure Bites treats -- I don't know what it is with their treats, which I've purchased occasionally, sometimes the chicken (or turkey breast treats) smell rancid.

The issue with using FD food as a topper vs a single ingredient FD meat treat is that you are increasing calcium / phos ratios since you are feeding (assuming) an already balanced, raw meal.

If you are just using a pinch or so of a FD food (e.g. S&C) then I guess it's not so much of an issue. And from what Purpose has indicated to me, 5% bone is certainly far less than any other bone-in, commercial raw FD products on the market that I'm aware of at this time.

It also wouldn't be the first time I've heard / read that S&C aren't thoroughly disclosing their bone percentages in their food.

Hi L lisamarie12 ,

Thank you very much for your suggestion! Another small bag of S&C is currently in my chewy shopping cart, but I think I will replace with Whole life and Bravo :compsurfing:

Pila needed 2 pc of S&C to finish her raw yesterday, so not a pinch  I have thread asking advice on her current issues and lisahe lisahe has been giving great advice. Pila is eating Dr.Pierson recipe almost 2 years. She met Vet, but not really (only visual, pulse, heart beat check type of things, no blood work). I am hoping that I can pinpoint :barf: trigger and there is not underline health issue, but we'll see. I will definitely schedule another appointment before spring. I guess all cats are, but kitties are really skittish to Vet ... does OK with my friends, but in general, rather shy to strangers.

Since we switched to 100% homemade raw, life's been so easy - kitties enjoy whatever I made all the time. It is rather difficult to buy commercial food at this point, because I became super picky shopper ...

Thanks again ... and hopefully Pila will like new FD toppers!

I am so looking forward to photos! (I want to see the little olive fork, too!) I'm hoping one of my local stores will order some Purpose for me. (Maybe some "purpose" would be good, too?)

CHIKITTIES, your cats sound so much like our two! They're also very shy with strangers, even with us sometimes, particularly when there are unexpected noises, even a cough or the phone or doorbell ringing -- we don't know what they saw/heard/experienced in their previous house.

It can be so tricky to do that pinpointing, which is part of why I made that list for you of non-sensitivity reasons cats might barf. We know that Edwina has some sensitivities (potato, at any rate) but her biggest problems really seem to be hurrying, nerves, and fur. Plus she'll eat anything edible off the floor. I think the fast eating and nerves are directly related to her history and fears of not getting enough to eat. Oddly enough, Edwina has been in something of a snit ever since Ireland's constipation issue has eased: Ireland now eats more and finishes her meals much better and faster than she used to, so there's less opportunity for Edwina to swoop in like a vulture and eat Ireland's leftovers. And there was an uptick in Edwina's vomiting when that happened. Part of that is from shedding, too, so brushing her daily and dividing the food up a little differently has really helped, knock on wood and tfu-tfu-tfu that it keeps up!

Anyway, fingers crossed on the new toppers! I hope they help!

I have a short video of her eating the food, under 25 MB but it doesn't look like videos can be uploaded to TCS?

I put the video on my FB page though and made that one post public so I guess just searching "Purpose Pet Food" on FB, it'll turn up, short vid, just 30 secs.

The food hydrates very well. I used the olive fork (sorry no pics, next time!) since I was just feeding one cat although if I were making the food for both cats, I would just use the pestle to mash it up, it's quicker.

Although Purpose sells via retail, I ordered the food online from PPF and I received it in less than 48 hours although I am here in NYC and that's where the co is based.

L lisamarie12 going off to this thread topic but:thanks: THANK YOU! Whole life Turkey worked just fine as S&C chick chick, and I feel much safer not giving her too much bone! I liked it because it does not feel oily like PureBite (not always, but sometimes as you said), crumbled super easy!
